Message from Fr. Gianulis

Prepare yourself, O Bethlehem

Today, November 15th, we begin the Nativity Fast. Some call this season Advent, which quite literally means "arrival" and signifies the start of an event or the arrival of a person. We in the Orthodox Tradition do not call this 40-day period in the Church calendar Advent because, quite simply, the person has not yet arrived! Rather, it is the season of preparation for His arrival, or birth, on Christmas Day.

It says in one of the seasonal hymns of the Church, “Prepare yourself, O Bethlehem, for Eden is opened unto all” (Kathisma, Sunday Before the Nativity). We are Bethlehem summoned to prepare ourselves to receive the Baby Jesus, the Christ and Savior of the world. And that is why we observe the Nativity Fast: to prepare ourselves. It is a time to reflect on and keep at the forefront of our minds the meaning and purpose of His coming birth. Nevertheless, it is a happy time. And the fast is not as severe or somber as in Great Lent. It ought to be reflective of a festive and joyful spirit, a charitable and giving heart.

Of course, we Orthodox Christians prepare ourselves through fasting, like before holy Communion, before Pascha, prior to the Dormintion, or any great Feast for that matter. There is no feast without fasting and conversely there is no fasting without a feast. But it is not merely about food, about what we eat. It is about how we think and act. Fast from negative thoughts. Fast from animosity. Fast from complaining. Fast from self-pity. Fast from foul language. Fast from anger. And so on.

The Father sent His Son because of love. So, let us reflect His love, the love Christ brings in His birth. As it is recorded in the Christmas narrative in Luke, ““Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:14)

Peace and goodwill should begin with us. Let us bring the peace of Christ to others. Let us share goodwill to all wherever we go. To truly prepare, make sure that peace and goodwill begins with us.

FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

Dear Fellow Parishioners

As we enter the holiday season, the trajectory of the parish remains very positive.  There is a lot to share regarding developments with respect to the parish finances and physical parish facilities.

1.  Roof Repairs.  We have released a solicitation package to contractors regarding the repair of our roof.  Four firms have expressed an interest and are preparing their bids that are due to us by Friday, November 15, 2024.  Our plan is to proceed with the roof repairs with two phases with this initial phase representing about 30% of the roof area and the bell tower.

2.  Security Upgrades.  We are in the process of upgrading the security around our Church and Hellenic Center complex with the addition of cameras.  More to come on this in the future.

3.  Church Iconography Project.  We have been in discussions with our iconographers regarding the completion of the church.  We hope to have information regarding the opportunities for parishioners to purchase icons for the project in December.

4.  General Assembly.  Our fall general assembly is scheduled for Sunday, December 1, 2024 after Divine Liturgy.  We will have updates on the two items above as well our financial status and proposed 2025 Parish Budget.

5. Parish Council Elections. The elections for the 2025-2026 term on the parish council will be held on December 1, 2024, after the Divine Liturgy and throughout the course of the General Assembly. Please find enclosed in this e-bulletin a nomination form.

Thank you for your support and God Bless the parish of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Williamsburg, VA.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

21st Sunday after Pentecost
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

21st Sunday after Pentecost

Gospel Reading

9th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 12:16-21

The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

9th Sunday of Luke

Saints and Feasts

November 17

Gregory the Wonderworker & Bishop of Neo-Caesarea

Saint Gregory was born in Neocaesarea of Pontus to parents who were not Christians. He studied in Athens, in Alexandria, in Beirut, and finally for five years in Caesarea of Palestine under Origen, by whom he was also instructed in the Faith of Christ. Then, in the year 240, he became bishop of his own city, wherein he found only seventeen Christians. By the time the Saint reposed about the year 265, there were only seventeen unbelievers left there. Virtually the whole duration of his episcopacy was a time of continual, marvellous wonders worked by him. Because of this, he received the surname "Wonderworker"; even the enemies of the truth called him a second Moses (see Saint Basil the Great's On the Holy Spirit, ch. 29).

November 17

Gennadios I and Maximus, Patriarchs of Constantinople

November 17

Righteous Mother Hilda of Whitby

Our righteous Mother Hilda was of noble birth, being a kinswoman of Saint Edwin, King of Northumbria (celebrated Oct. 12). At the age of thirty-three she renounced the world, and lived another thirty-three years as a nun and abbess. The last six years of her life she suffered a burning fever with patience and nobility, and reposed in peace in the year 680.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Gregory the Wonderworker in the Plagal Fourth Tone

By vigilance in prayer, and continuance in the working of wonders, thou didst acquire thine achievements as a surname; wherefore, intercede with Christ our God, O Father Gregory, to enlighten our souls, lest we sleep in sin unto death.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Tone

Today, the most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasure of God, enters the house of the Lord, bringing the grace of the Divine Spirit. The Angels of God praise her. She is the heavenly tabernacle.

Wisdom of the Fathers

When a man reveres God with all his heart and with faith, he receives through God's providence the power to control anger and desire; for it is desire and anger which are the cause of all evils.
St. Antony the Great
Philokalia Vol. 1

We know that prayer in and of itself cannot save us, but carrying it out before God can. For when the Lord's eyes are upon us He sanctifies us, as the sun warms everything upon which it shines. St. Gregory Palamas
St. Gregory Palamas

In everything they the Apostles did, they thought of God and lived in constant devotion to Him. This spiritual state was their unceasing prayer.
St. Basil the Great
