Message from Fr. Gianulis

OUR FIRST PRIORITY

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I was very pleased with the wonderful turnout we had for Fr. Martin Ritsi and the great show of support for the work of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC). I thank Tom and Linda Jouvanis for chairing this event and making it a meaningful day and a success not to be measured merely in the money raised for OCMC, but for increasing the awareness of missions, the heart of the Gospel message, in our community.

Missions is about spreading the Gospel message, the good news of Christ, and Church growth everywhere. Missions can be external and internal. It can be abroad and at home. We all can participate in the work of missions.

For our parish to grow, everyone has an idea what is needed most. For some, it is finances; for others, membership; for others, outreach and missions; and others, more participation in the work of the parish.  Clearly, all these are important and essential. God bless all those who do.

However, I would suggest that all of these things and more are related to what actually is our first and most important priority: to know God. The more we seek to know God, whom we can know only through knowing His Son, Jesus Christ, the better equipped we will be to build and maintain our parish. And this work, knowing God, is everyone’s responsibility and obligation.

It is in seeking an interior, personal relationship with God through Christ Jesus that we in turn help others realize the same.  Spiritual growth is contagious, so to speak, and Church growth stems from spiritual growth. The one is the root and the other the fruit.  In seeking a relationship with the Lord first and foremost, the Spirit will spread to each and every member.  With that, growth will follow and all the other important things as well.

What God requires of us is to love the Lord our God with all our heart and all our soul (Lev. 10:12).  This means to give of ourselves totally to be in the presence of God, in our worship, in our relationships, and in our work for the Church.  Christ Himself affirms this priority of loving God first and foremost when he taught us "to seek His Kingdom and His righteousness." All else will follow, including Church growth.

May the blessing of the Lord be with us all.

He was also a prolific writer, theologian, philosopher, moralist, educator, poet, ascetic and mystic. Above all St. Nektarios was a man of deep prayer and a tireless worker.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

19th Sunday after Pentecost
The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise --whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

19th Sunday after Pentecost

Gospel Reading

5th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 16:19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

5th Sunday of Luke

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Tone

When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You.

Apolytikion for Martyrs Ascepsimas, Joseph & Aeithalas in the Fourth Tone

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Apolytikion for Dedication of the Temple of St. George in the Fourth Tone

Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Wisdom of the Fathers

If salvtion is by grace, someone will say, "Why is it that we are not all saved?" Because you did not will it. For grace, even though it be grace, saves only the willing, not those who are unwilling and turn away from it and constantly fight against it and oppose themselves to it.
St. John Chrysostom

The man who has once chosen pleasure in this life, and has not cured his inconsiderateness by repentance, places the land of the good beyond his own reach; for he has dug against himself the yawning impassable abyss of a necessity that nothing can break through.
St. Gregory of Nyssa
