Message from Fr. Gianulis

METROPOLITAN APOSTOLOS' THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18

As we gather together in celebration of the beautiful and unique holiday of our great nation, Thanksgiving, we are given the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of this wonderful day in light of all that our almighty God has bestowed upon us. Truly, as we gather around our Thanksgiving tables and offer up expressions of thanks and appreciation for our beloved family members, friends, and loved ones, we must not overlook or neglect to express our gratitude to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for all of His heavenly blessings upon us. This expression of our thanks to our Lord should not be limited to mere reflection or words but should be accompanied with our active participation in living our Orthodox Faith, through our participation in the Holy Sacraments, through our love for our fellow man, and through our acts of charity and philanthropy to all those in need.

Therefore, my beloved in the Lord, I implore you, that as we celebrate this amazing holiday, enjoying the delicious food and the wonderful fellowship, that we remember to reflect on the many gifts that God has blessed us with. Our true appreciation of His love for us is a rich blessing that allows us to continue to grow closer to Him and to continue to follow the path which He has laid for us, which leads to salvation.

Wishing all of you, your families and all the faithful people of our sacred Metropolis a most blessed, healthy and Happy Thanksgiving filled with His blessings from above, I remain,

With Paternal Love and Blessings

† APOSTOLOS Metropolitan of New Jersey

Parish Council Elections. The elections for the 2025-2027 term on the parish council will be held as well on December 8, 2024, after the Divine Liturgy and throughout the course of the General Assembly.  Nominations for the Parish Council have closed.

Stewardship Update.

As we are in the Nativity Fast and the last weeks of 2024, it is a good time to consider our 2024 pledge to St. Demetrios, our church, our spiritual home. We currently have 56 pledges compared to 67 last year, 2023, so are well behind. Have you made your 2024 pledge? Have you fulfilled your pledge?

Our pledge goal for the last two years is $167,000.00. Last year we reached $182,486 and to date we are at $145,000.00. Not good, but there is time to consider a pledge, bring your pledge current, and to make special gifts as part of our Nativity Fast. Remember, to be eligible to vote for candidates to the Parish Council, you must be current on your pledge.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19–21

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

23rd Sunday after Pentecost
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10

Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

23rd Sunday after Pentecost

Gospel Reading

14th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 18:35-43

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

14th Sunday of Luke

Saints and Feasts

December 01

Nahum the Prophet

The Prophet Nahum had Elkesaeus (Elkosh) as his homeland, and was from the tribe of Symeon; he is seventh in order among the twelve Minor Prophets He prophesied during the time of Hezekias, after the destruction of Samaria (721 years before Christ), but before the ten tribes were taken into captivity; he prophesied against Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. His name means "comforter." His book of prophecy is divided into three chapters.

December 01

Philaret the Merciful of Amnia

Saint Philaret a native of Paphlagonia in Asia Minor, was a virtuous Christian layman who lived in lawful wedlock and raised a family. He was most renowned for his generosity to all in need. With the permission of God, in a short space of time he lost the greater part of his possessions to theft and other misfortunes and was left with nothing but his family, his home, and a little livestock. Yet he continued to give generously to the poor despite the faint-heartedness of his family, who reproached him for giving alms when they were in need themselves; and God, seeing his faith, restored his prosperity to him many times over. He foresaw the day of his death, and reposed in an odour of sanctity in Constantinople in 789.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Tone

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Tone

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

Wisdom of the Fathers

“When God is thanked, He gives us still further blessings, while we, by receiving His gifts, love Him all the more and through this love attain that divine wisdom whose beginning is the fear of God” (Prov. 1:7)
St. Peter of Damascus

“Thank You, O Lord! Everyone capable of thanksgiving is capable of salvation and eternal joy! Thank You, O Lord, for having accepted this Eucharist, which we offered to the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and which filled our hearts with the joy, peace and righteousness of the Holy Spirit. Thank You, O Lord, for having revealed Yourself unto us and given us the foretaste of Your Kingdom. Thank You, O Lord, for having united us to one another in serving You and Your Holy Church. Thank You, O Lord, for having helped us to overcome all difficulties, tensions, passions, temptations and restored peace, mutual love and joy in sharing the communion of the Holy Spirit. Thank You, O Lord, for the sufferings You bestowed upon us, for they are purifying us from selfishness and reminding us of the “one thing needed;” Your eternal Kingdom. Thank You, O Lord, for having given us this country where we are free to worship You. Thank You, O Lord, for this church, where the name of God is proclaimed. Thank You, O Lord, for our families: husbands, wives and, especially, children who teach us how to celebrate Your holy Name in joy, movement and holy noise. Thank You, O Lord, for everyone and everything. Great are You, O Lord, and marvelous are Your deeds, and no word is sufficient to celebrate Your miracles. Lord, it is good to be here! Amen!”
