FROM THE PAST

FROM THE PAST (2004)

For many years, Maria Touvannas created a monthly publication for St. Nectarios entitled the “St. Nectarios Messenger.”  At first it was mailed to the Parish each month – later it was distributed mainly by email.  Below is text the St. Nectarios Messenger for June 2004.  We are indebted to her for the many years and many ways that she has supported and does support St. Nectarios.   Thank You!

This item from the past will bring back many good memories for long term members. The Greek Nite was a lot fun!

Message from Father John

THE PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS AND ITS MEANING FOR US

Jesus used parables to teach us the truth about this life and the life to come—eternal life.

The rich man lived in a mansion. He wore the most expensive clothes, feasted daily on gourmet foods with his friends and enjoyed the pleasures of this life. Lazarus, on the other hand, was homeless, full of sores and sick. For food he ate the crumbs that they were throwing out from the rich man’s table.  Only the dogs were his companion.

In our ephemeral life, all of us are confronted with our universal mortality.  Both Lazarus and the rich man died. Lazarus was just buried. He did not have anybody to give him a funeral. The rich man also died and was given a spectacular funeral.  After all, his body was important to him all his life. He dressed it well and fed it with the best foods.

But Lazarus’ and the rich man’s souls arrived at two different places. Lazarus’ soul was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom, which symbolizes paradise. The soul of the heartless rich man was carried by the devils to Hades, to Hell.

We do not lose our consciousness and identity in the eternal life. The rich man sees Lazarus in paradise, and he is aware of his torments. He asked Fr. Abraham to have compassion on him and send Lazarus to refresh his burning tongue.

But alas! The two worlds are absolutely separated. There is no repentance in the other life. We reap there what we sowed in this life: rewards or punishment for our deeds.

In his suffering, the rich man remembered his 5 brothers who were following his example on earth.  He asked Fr. Abraham to send Lazarus to warn them, in order to repent, to change their way of life so that they wouldn’t come to hell.

But Fr. Abraham told him that they have the teachings of Moses and the Prophets, the teaching of the Bible. Let them obey them.  The rich man told Fr. Abraham that they do not read the Bible, and they do not obey its teachings. But if someone rises from the dead they will change. But Fr. Abraham told him that if they do not obey the teachings of God in the Bible, even if one rises from the dead, they won’t pay attention and listen to him.

We would have a lesser excuse ourselves, because we have not only Moses and the Prophets, the Old Testament, but also the New Testament. God the Father sent also His beloved Son to us to show us the way to our salvation. How beautifully St. John wrote it for us to hear: “For God loved the world so much that He sent His Son so that whoever believes in Him may not die but have life everlasting.” Yes, the Son of God, our Lord, was incarnate, walked among us as a God-Man, taught us the Will of God, verified His teaching with miracles, assumed our sins and nailed them to the cross and He rose from the dead to win for us eternal salvation. He defeated our archenemies, the devil and death, and freed us from sin. What He expects from us now is repentance for our sins, acceptance of His saving grace and doing His Holy Will, as He kept the Will of His Father. He asks us to know and do His Holy Will that we recite every day in the Lord’s prayer.

The rich man was not condemned for his riches but for the hardness of his heart, for ignoring the plight of Lazarus at his gate and the selfish misuse of his riches. Abraham was a very rich man, but he used his riches to help other people and glorify God. Lazarus went to paradise not because he was poor; but for not complaining about his plight. He patiently endured his homelessness and sickness. He hoped in God all his life.

There is a great need all around us today. The natural disasters have aggravated the situation and have created a greater need. Each one of us is called to respond to the needs of our fellowman according to our ability. This philanthropic response helps us put into action our Christian faith and love.

With love, Fr. John P. Angelis

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Tone

When You descended to death, O Immortal Life, then, the light of Your divinity destroyed Hades. When You raised the dead from the depths of darkness, all the heavenly powers cried out, "Glory to You our Christ, the Giver of Life."

Apolytikion for Martyrs Ascepsimas, Joseph & Aeithalas in the Fourth Tone

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Apolytikion for Dedication of the Temple of St. George in the Fourth Tone

Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Second Tone. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9.

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise --whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Gospel Reading

5th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 16:19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy.  Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy  (with a visiting Priest).  That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available.  In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages.  Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek.  If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers  and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy  with Father John in the Seattle area.  During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle.  The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is
https://goarch.zoom.us/j/98009355049?pwd=UmttUUN2aG4raUc4WS9Zelo1REYxdz09
On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service  with a Parish Fellowship Time.  This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.
All are welcome to join in the celebration these Christian Orthodox Services.
