For many years, Maria Touvannas created a monthly publication for St. Nectarios entitled the “St. Nectarios Messenger.” At first it was mailed to the Parish each month – later it was distributed mainly by email. Below is text the St. Nectarios Messenger for June 2004. We are indebted to her for the many years and many ways that she has supported and does support St. Nectarios. Thank You!

This item from the past will bring back many good memories for long term members. The Greek Nite was a lot fun!

Fundraiser Scheduled

Now that the Paschal season is over it is time to seriously begin the planning and preparations for our 2004 fundraising event. With the encouragement of Metropolitan Anthony, the plans for this year’s event are bigger and better than ever. We will be hosting:

GREEK NITE

“A Taste of Greece” Authentic Greek Food, Entertainment by a Live Greek Band and Dance Performances by Award Winning Greek Folk Dancers - Saturday, November 13, 2004 At The Trac Convention Center, Pasco, Washington: 6:00-10:00pm. This will be the parish’s way of sharing some of its cultural heritage with the Tri-Cities and the surrounding areas. Thanks for the support of other Greek Orthodox parishes within our diocese. By the grace of God and everyone’s hard work and active participation this fundraiser will be the best ever for the parish of St. Nectarios. Please mark your calendars for this important date. We will need everyone’s help in some capacity. Lots of plans are in the works and committees are being formed so stay tuned for future details!

“Discussion Time” A Fellowship Discussion Time with Deacon Timothy has begun following Saturday evening Vespers. All are welcome to join us for an open discussion about our Orthodox Faith and Traditions. Meetings will take place every Saturday unless otherwise noted on the calendar.

Caring for the Lord’s House: The Lord provides for us and we must take care of and cherish the things He entrusts to us….our families, homes, jobs, school, and our church home. Let’s take an active part in the upkeep of our church and remember, if we all pitch in and work as a team, much more will be accomplished.

CURRENT EVENTS: Monastery Nativity Celebration, June 23 and 24, 2004

The Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint John the Honorable Forerunner extends an invitation to join them for their annual Nativity Celebration on Wednesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 24, 2004. Hope to see you there, as it is a good time to visit with the Orthodox Christians that come from all areas within Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska for this special Feast Day.

Message from Father John

HOW DO WE BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD?

St. Luke tells us how we can become children of God in his Gospel. He states the "Golden Rule" in positive terms. "As you wish that men would do to you, do the same to them." The golden rule was stated in negative language in the Old Testament: "What you hate, do not do it to others." The Christian faith is not a religion of negatives. It is a Faith of positives. What to do actively with love to inherit eternal life and find peace in the present life.

St. Luke outlines 3 steps in our spiritual growth. The first step is to practice and show to others justice, righteousness, thikaiosyni. The second step is love, long-suffering, anexikakia, for others. The third step is mercy, compassion, suffering together with loving kindness with the others. The Greek text uses our oiktirmoi for others.

Let us now consider more extensively each step.

The first step is Justice, righteousness. The Commandments of God express His Holy Will for all of us. They demand from us equal justice for all, without exception. When the young man asked Jesus what to do to inherit eternal life, Jesus told him to keep, to do and to live the commandments of God. The Christian life is not a rocket science. It simply asks us to do unto others what we wish them to do unto us. God who has created us has given us what is beneficial for us.

The second step is love and long-suffering. We are called to love our fellowman. God loves all of us. His sunshine and rain benefit all of us. While we were enemies of God, through our disobedience and sins, God loved us and sent to us His beloved Son to rescue us. He became one of us, without sin, revealed to us God's Holy Will, and suffered for us in order to liberate us from our enemies, sin and death. Our Lord Jesus healed the defects of our fallen human nature and restored us to our pristine condition. We were washed clean from our sin in our baptism and were given the grace of the Holy Spirit to live a new, Christian life. God has opened His Kingdom to us to foretaste the joy of the world to come. With His grace we are capable now to keep His commandments, we are able to follow the example of our Lord to love one another, even our enemies. Jesus gave us an example of forgiveness in the parable of the prodigal son, but especially on the cross, when He asked His Father to forgive His crucifiers "for they knew not what they were doing."

The third step elevates us to heaven. This step refers to the mercy and compassion of God, His oiktirmoi. Jesus, not only did not hate his enemies, but He loved them. Jesus did not love their sin; He loved the sinners. He had compassion for them. He prayed for His crucifiers to be forgiven and saved. Jesus showed mercy. He was merciful to them and suffered to save them and all of us, who come to Him. Have you ever counted how many times we say, "Lord, have mercy," in our Church Services? Very often we address God as "merciful, compassionate, long-suffering, tender-hearted." Our Lord Jesus revealed to us in the Lord's Prayer that our God is a compassionate Father, who loves all of us.

The Bible calls all of us to imitate our Heavenly Father. He loved us when we were His enemies. He sent His only-begotten Son to rescue us: To reveal to us the Holy Will of the Father; and to free us from the clutches of our arch-enemy, the devil, who seeks our death and destruction. He cleansed us from our sins in our baptism and empowered us with His grace in our Chrismation to be able to do what He requires from us. We are no longer impotent to do His Holy Will, the Commandments of God. He invites all us to receive His Holy Gifts every Sunday to be strengthened in our spiritual life, to be united with Him. Is Christ asking too much from us, when He has done and is doing so much for us? "Therefore, St. Luke concludes, "love your enemies, and do good and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons and daughters of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful" (Luke 6:36).

Cyriacus the Hermit of Palestine

This Saint was born in Corinth in 448. He went to Palestine to the Lavra of Euthymius the Great, but because of his youth was sent by Saint Euthymius to Saint Gerasimus; after the death of Saint Gerasimus he returned to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. Later he took on a more rigorous life of asceticism in the wilderness of Natoufa, where there was nothing to eat except the exceedingly bitter wild herb called squills, which, however, through his prayers, God made sweet for him and his disciple. He lived 107 years and reposed in the year 555.

O Faithful, let us sing a hymn of praise and worship to the Logos, coeternal with the Father and the Spirit, who was born of the Virgin for our salvation. Of His own will He went upon the Cross in the flesh and suffered death, to raise the dead through His glorious Resurrection.

Thou didst prove to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O Cyriacus, our God-bearing Father. CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy (with a visiting Priest). That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available. In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages. Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek. If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy with Father John in the Seattle area. During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle. The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is

On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service with a Parish Fellowship Time. This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.

Saint Mary and Saint Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church.   This Coptic Church is currently holding services at the St. Nectarios Church. A Saturday or Sunday Holy Liturgy with a visiting Priest is normally held once per month either in the Tricities or in Spokane. All are invited to attend.
