For many years, Maria Touvannas created a monthly publication for St. Nectarios entitled the “St. Nectarios Messenger.” At first it was mailed to the Parish each month – later it was distributed mainly by email. Below is text the St. Nectarios Messenger for June 2004. We are indebted to her for the many years and many ways that she has supported and does support St. Nectarios. Thank You!

This item from the past will bring back many good memories for long term members. The Greek Nite was a lot fun!

Fundraiser Scheduled

Now that the Paschal season is over it is time to seriously begin the planning and preparations for our 2004 fundraising event. With the encouragement of Metropolitan Anthony, the plans for this year’s event are bigger and better than ever. We will be hosting:

GREEK NITE

“A Taste of Greece” Authentic Greek Food, Entertainment by a Live Greek Band and Dance Performances by Award Winning Greek Folk Dancers - Saturday, November 13, 2004 At The Trac Convention Center, Pasco, Washington: 6:00-10:00pm. This will be the parish’s way of sharing some of its cultural heritage with the Tri-Cities and the surrounding areas. Thanks for the support of other Greek Orthodox parishes within our diocese. By the grace of God and everyone’s hard work and active participation this fundraiser will be the best ever for the parish of St. Nectarios. Please mark your calendars for this important date. We will need everyone’s help in some capacity. Lots of plans are in the works and committees are being formed so stay tuned for future details!

“Discussion Time” A Fellowship Discussion Time with Deacon Timothy has begun following Saturday evening Vespers. All are welcome to join us for an open discussion about our Orthodox Faith and Traditions. Meetings will take place every Saturday unless otherwise noted on the calendar.

Caring for the Lord’s House: The Lord provides for us and we must take care of and cherish the things He entrusts to us….our families, homes, jobs, school, and our church home. Let’s take an active part in the upkeep of our church and remember, if we all pitch in and work as a team, much more will be accomplished.

CURRENT EVENTS: Monastery Nativity Celebration, June 23 and 24, 2004

The Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint John the Honorable Forerunner extends an invitation to join them for their annual Nativity Celebration on Wednesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 24, 2004. Hope to see you there, as it is a good time to visit with the Orthodox Christians that come from all areas within Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska for this special Feast Day.

Message from Father John

SUNDAY AFTER THE ELEVATION OF THE HOLY CROSS OF CHRIST

Christ’s Conditions for our eternal salvation:

“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.”

God respects our freedom which He gave us in our creation. He created us free to choose what is good. He did not create us as robots to manipulate us from afar. He will not stop us if we decide to turn against Him and choose evil. God will give us opportunities to reconsider our decision and repent, but He will not force us. “Cloistered virtue is no virtue at all.” But our freedom is earthbound. One day we will have to give an account to Him of how we used our freedom and then we will reap the appropriate consequences.

God respects our freedom; but after we accept His invitation, we need to conform to His terms of service.

First we need to deny our self, our selfish, narcissistic love, our filautia.

The egotistical self-love is the root of all passionate desires and evils, because it turns our unnatural self-love of our ego into an idol. We think of ourselves as the center of our surroundings, and we want the others to attend to all our desires and whims. We become very selfish, possessive and manipulative. St. John Chrysostom said long ago, “my own and your own is the root of all evil.”

We are invited to heal this selfish, unnatural love which is the result of our fallen human nature; to make it an unselfish love. God summarized His requirement of us in one commandment: To love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love our fellowman. This is the true meaning of “denying our self.” For in denying our egotistical self we find our true self, as God intended us to be.” Christ gave us His example to emulate in order to find true meaning in our life.

The second step, after curing our selfish, egotistical love, is to “take up our own cross.”

Christ carried His own cross and suffered on it to forgive our sins, to redeem us from the curse of the law and to grant us eternal life with His glorious resurrection from the dead.

All of us have our own cross which comes in various forms. We are invited to carry our cross patiently. He will not abandon us under the weight of our cross. God will give us His grace and strength to carry it and benefit from this pain and suffering. But we need to keep our faith and hope in Him and never doubt His ability to help us in any situation we find ourselves. In the Sacraments of our Church He gives us His grace to assist us. We must be certain, that He will never give us more than we can bear. (e.g. The foot steps on the sand)

The third condition in Christ’s invitation is to “follow Him.”

After Jesus restored Peter to his position, He told Peter to “follow Him!” Jesus is the “Way, the Truth, Life itself.” The first Christians were called the “followers of the Way.”

We deny ourselves and carry our cross for a glorious purpose—to imitate the life of Christ; to achieve victory over sin and death as the crucified and resurrected Christ achieved it. Remember the gospel lesson from the Sunday of Judgment. The ones who helped their fellowman in his need inherited the Kingdom of God.

Lastly, we do all this for our invaluable soul, for our salvation. Nothing in this world can be compared in value with our immortal soul. No one and nothing can redeem our soul, can save us, except for Christ. He accomplished that for us. He is our Savior and Redeemer. Only when we follow Him and do His holy Will we’ll find eternal salvation and meaning in our present life.

The Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas

The name Thomas means, "twin." He was one of the Twelve, a Galilean by birth. Sophroneus (not the famous Patriarch of Jerusalem [7th Century, celebrated March 11], but a friend of Jerome's), quoted also by Jerome, says that Saint Thomas preached to the Parthians, Pesians, Medes, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and neighbouring nations. According to Heracleon, the Apostle died a natural death; according to other accounts, he was martyred at Meliapur His tomb was known by Saint John Chrysostom to be at Edessa in Syria, to which city his holy relics may have been translated from India in the fourth century.

O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy (with a visiting Priest). That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available. In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages. Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek. If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy with Father John in the Seattle area. During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle. The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is

On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service with a Parish Fellowship Time. This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.

Saint Mary and Saint Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church.   This Coptic Church is currently holding services at the St. Nectarios Church. A Saturday or Sunday Holy Liturgy with a visiting Priest is normally held once per month either in the Tricities or in Spokane. All are invited to attend.
