9TH SUNDAY OF LUKE

 FATHER SAMARAS

ALWAYS A SPIRITUAL FOCUS FIRST

Sunday, November 20th, 2022

Dear Parish Members, Welcomed Guests and Friends,

“Would you want to be surprised—or would you want to know ahead of time for the anticipation?”

Aren’t these the fun questions we ask our spouses when we’re planning an evening out, for something like an anniversary, a birthday? It’s always a good game of how to approach the event. Would your spouse be happier with a surprise or happier getting to look forward to the event and venue?

This is what we play sometimes, wanting to accomplish the most memorable thing for an occasion.

In our faith, a number of the saints and monastics always strive to live in the “now,” avoiding the past and the future. Their focus is on God right now.

But for us, who may be on lesser levels than the saints and monastics, we balance between the past and future, with our present actions as the fulcrum balance. True, sometimes, the past gives us the warmth of nostalgia and the future can give us the excitement of anticipation. Sometimes, the past is regret and the future is fear. Sometimes, it’s a hard choice.

For now, let’s look a little bit ahead to anticipate joy:  on January 7th, our beloved parish will celebrate its day in honour of our patron Saint John the Baptist, this day being fresh from the previous day of Holy Epiphany when the Holy Trinity becomes manifest to all. It’s a good thing for the next day, January 7th, to be in honour of Saint John who has baptized the Christ Messiah, proclaiming him to the world.

So, our parish family will be celebrating as we can:  on January 7th, 2023, we’ll celebrate our Orthros service and our Divine Liturgy. Prepare to receive Holy Communion this morning. In the evening, we’ll have our celebration gathering in honour of Saint John the Baptist. More details will be announced as soon as we secure them. Do stay tuned.

Faithfully, Father Samaras

On November 20th, we commemorate our devout father Gregory of Dekapolis; our father among the saints Proklos, Archbishop of Constantinople; the contest of the holy martyr Dasios; the holy martyrs Nirsa the Bishop, and Joseph his student, and others who died with them in Persia; the holy martyrs Isakios, John, and Saborios; the holy martyrs Geithazet and another three; the holy virgins and martyrs Thecla, Vaoutha, and Denachis; the holy martyrs Efstathios, Thespesios, and Anatolios; and Saint Theoktistos.

STEWARDSHIP

Your Stewardship allows our church to grow and continue to be an important part of our Greek community.

Christian stewardship means that I own nothing. Everything I have belongs to God. He has loaned it to me. I am committed to use it responsibly, and one day, I will have to answer to Him for my use or misuse of His gifts.

I am the manager of God’s gifts: my time, my talents, my possessions, my body, my soul – everything belongs to God.  Money, for example, becomes a sacrament when it is offered to God. It becomes a visible expression of our commitment, faith, and love for Jesus. Once given to God, our gifts are consecrated by the Holy Spirit, who then translates them into works of mercy that bring glory to God.

Father Anthony M. Coniaris (1926-2020)

Gregory the Righteous of Decapolis

Saint Gregory who was from Irenopolis of the Decapolis of Asia Minor, was the son of Sergius and Mary. He became a monk as a young man, and after struggling for many years in virtue and prayer under obedience to a wise spiritual father, he was informed by revelation that it was the will of God for him to live, like the Patriarch Abraham, with no certain dwelling, moving from place to place. His journeyings took him to Ephesus, Constantinople, Corinth, Rome, Sicily, Thessalonica, and again to Constantinople, where, after many labours in defence of Orthodoxy against Iconoclasm, he reposed in peace in the first half of the ninth century. He had two disciples, one of whom was Saint Joseph the Hymnographer (see Apr. 3), who wrote the Menaion service for Saint Gregory, his father in Christ.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Entry of the Theotokos in the Fourth Mode

By blossoming forth the only Ever-virgin as fruit, today holy Anna doth betroth us all unto joy, instead of our former grief; on this day she doth fulfil her vows to the Most High, leading her with joy into the Lord's holy temple, who truly is the temple and pure Mother of God the Word.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

The whole world is filled today with joy and gladness on the Theotokos's auspicious and resplendent feast, whereon with great voice it crieth out: The heavenly tabernacle is she in truth.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

First Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Matthew 28:16-20

At that time, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen."

First Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10.

Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Plagal Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

9th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 12:16-21

The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

9th Sunday of Luke
