WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Whether you are new to Bangor or if you're just passing through--welcome! If you've come because you are curious about the Orthodox Church, its beliefs and worship, you are very welcome, too! Please don't hesitate to introduce yourself to someone you've never met and consider staying for some refreshments and fellowship after the morning service. If you would like to receive mailings or otherwise stay in touch, please leave your contact information (name, address, phone, email) with the person in the church office.
SUNDAY SCHOOL is on a break for the summer and will restart on September 14! In the interim, Mrs. Bucklin has made coloring sheets and crayons available in the fellowship hall for any young ones who'd like to color. We ask that you take any artwork home after coloring. Thank you!
THE BELOVED SAINT KOSMAS OF AIETOLIA is commemorated this day. Learn more about him here: https://youtu.be/J7lB-Fey_40?si=s9TQ2hRi_6zONuil
TODAY We celebrate the memory of St. Phanourios with a phanouropita made by the Akrivakis family. His feast day is this coming Wednesday. St. Phanourios is the revealer of lost things in the Orthodox tradition and if you ask his help and he reveals your lost item, it is customary to bake a "phanouropita" in thanksgiving. Learn more about this wonderful Saint commemorated on August 27 each year: https://orthodoxtraditions.blogspot.com/2013/12/st-phanourios-great-martyr-newly.html
THIS FRIDAY WE REMEMBER THE BEHEADING OF ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER It is held as a strict fast day.
PRAYER REQUESTS UPDATE Prayer changes things--let us support one another. Let's add Mona, Anthony and their "Little Sprout" to this prayer list. More info below. Let us also remember Susan and Sharon, and their departed loved ones, brother Darrell and step-dad, Allen, both having departed this life this month. Please pray for Sean, Anita Rose's son, who is suffering digestive distress and will be undergoing a diagnostic test in the near future. Catherine, who was on this list in the past, and needs a second surgery to correct an aneuyrism, likely this month. She would appreciate your prayers. Summarized requests from past weeks: for Fr. Leo (he has a complete rotator cuff tear); for Eleni M who has chronic health struggles, for continued prayers of protection for Mona's family living in Pakistan; for Cathy who is seeking to overcome cancer naturally, for John, who needs treatment for esophageal disease, for Mark, UMaine student working with Project Mexico this summer. Also, for a parishioner relative Nick, afflicted with a serious illness. Continue to uphold Victoria's son, Matthew (attending seminary this fall), Panagiota & Seraphima (stroke recovery) and Pat (managing eyesight health). Again, your prayers for these these brothers and sisters in Christ are of great assistance to each person being upheld.
INFANTICIPATION NEWS Some of you may have noticed that Mona's appearance is a little different these days. To set the burning question to rest, the answer is, "Yes, she is expecting a baby--surprise!!" Mona and Anthony are thrilled to say the least, however, they are also a bit apprehensive, as their first son, Mikhail, was called by God before he reached the week of viability. Their sorrow was immeasurable at the time and there will always be a deep sadness for them on this side of the veil. The Little Sprout that Mona is now carrying should reach the week of viability around September 19. Both Mona and Anthony are asking everyone's prayers for the health, safety and eventual delivery of Little Sprout around Christmastime. These upcoming weeks until the time of birth are crucial ones and the more prayer the better. May God bless the little family and maintain the health of His servants. Thank you in advance for your prayers!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Eliza turned two last Thursday and mom has baked some cupcakes for us to enjoy in celebration today. We are glad to celebrate Eliza's milestone with her, mom & dad. Many years, Eliza! May you grow up to be a Saint!
BAPTISM Let us rejoice with Patrick and Brigid whose third child, Anastasia, will be presented for baptism next Sunday, 31 Aug. The baptism will take place at Holy Archangels Mission in Limestone. Let us pray for the family and especially for little Anastastia that she, along with Eliza, she will grow up to be a Saint!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR FELLOWSHIP HOUR DISHES Reminder: We do have food allergies among us. Someone has an allergy to some nuts--specifically walnuts, pecans and cashews. If you bring a dish having any of these ingredients, please label them! Cashews are notorious--they are often made into vegan cheese products or spreads and some nut milks contain cashews. Consuming these nuts accidentally makes the person rather ill. Someone else has a severe allergy to salmon and crab. Again, please label any dishes containing these ingredients. We want to avoid causing illness in others. Of course, we all know about peanuts--please don't bring those at all. Thanks, everyone!
SOON THE ECCLESIASTICAL (CHURCH) NEW YEAR WILL BE HERE On September 1, we restart the calendar for the church year, with every feast and fast in the yearly cycle. You can learn a lot by following the church calendar, learning the Saints' days, observing the fasts and celebrating the feasts. If you don't already have a church calendar at home please pick one up in the narthex, they are free and there still are a few 2025 editions left. The 2026 calendar will be available before too long. Get in the rhythm of the ecclesiastical year--get a calendar, see where we are and where we're headed. God bless us all as we look forward to a new year together in community!
PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE who are learning more about the Orthodox Church and Faith. These plan to unite themselves to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Let us remember Zach, Joshua, Sarah and baby Henry, Dana, Jada, and Valerie in our prayers. God grant each of you wisdom and lead you as you seek Him through prayer, worship and reading. If others would like to join this group, please let Fr. Leo know.
ST GEORGE YOUNG ADULTS (20's / 30's / 40's) - SINGLES & MARRIEDS Might you be interested in forming a group that gets together to do things outside of Sunday morning church and fellowship hour? Maybe meeting once a month for a fun activity or a service activity or a spiritually based activity? We have enough people in this age group to do some activities. Besides, it is good to grow and strengthen relationships through group activities. Other Christian peers (invited by you) could also join in. Interested in getting the idea off the ground? Let Pres. know.
YOUNG ADULT ACTIVITY SUGGESTED FOR SEPTEMBER Hiking, canoeing, kayaking at Hirundo Wildlife Refuge (not far from St. George). There is a shelter building there, a pond and a dock. Hiking trails are along Pushaw Stream. Demetri knows the area like the back of his hand and is the Refuge Manager. Want to make it happen? Talk with Demetri during fellowship hour.
A DESIGNATED SPOT FOR HANDICAPPED PARKING Please note the spot designated for handcapped parking right outside the front door - the curb is painted blue to advise us to leave that space free for those who may need it.
A WORD FROM OUR STEWARDSHIP CHAIR Donna thanks all the faithful supporters of St. George who fulfill their pledges regularly and those who've given memorial gifts this season as well. We have been running a bit lean due to summer months and vacationing. If you can bring your stewardship up to date or otherwise contribute a bit more during these last weeks of summer, it would be greatly appreciated--thank you!
KEEP IT COMIN' Thank you for remembering to buy shelf staple items to donate to the Bangor homeless shelter! Continue to bring your grocery donations and we will continue to deliver them to the shelter for you. Community members Jack, Areti, Gabriya and Kathy graciously collect and deliver items monthly--thank you! Here is a list of foods needed regularly by the shelter: Pasta / Pasta Sauce / Macaroni & cheese / Boxed stove-top meals / Instant potatoes / Pancake mix / Butter / Margarine / BBQ sauce / Salad dressing / Mayonnaise / Mustard / Ground coffee / Powdered coffee creamer / Sugar. Note to senior citizens: Ocean State Job Lot in Bangor offers 20% off food items (many on the above list) every Monday between 8-9AM. You can get more for your donation dollars there!
A NICE WAY TO HELP ST. GEORGE For an unspecified time, a family has offered to buy our bookshop stock as a donation so the church does not need to fund the stock purchases. That means whenever you buy from our bookshop St. George benefits a good bit. So please shop here and if there is a book or something else (icon, prayer rope, neck cross, bread seal, or the like) you're looking for, please let Pres. know so it can be ordered. Thanks for shopping here--and let Pres. know if you are looking for specific items or want to order a particular book.
NEW BOOKSTORE ITEMS: Small wrist prayers ropes handmade in Crete have been added to our bookstore stock. Black ropes $8 / Multi-color ropes $12.
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - Donations can be made online.
Saint Eutyches was a disciple of Saint John the Theologian and a fellow laborer of the holy Apostle Paul. He preached the Gospel in many places, pulled down the idols' temples, and suffered imprisonments and many torments at the hands of the idolaters. He finally reposed in peace in deep old age in his native city of Sebastia, near Tarsus.
Our holy Father Cosmas was from the town of Mega Dendron (Great Tree) of Aetolia. At the age of twenty, he went to study at the school of the Monastery of Vatopedi on the Holy Mountain. Later, he came to the Athonite Monastery of Philotheou where he was tonsured. With the blessing of his abbot, he departed for Constantinople where he learned the art of rhetoric, and thereafter, he began to preach throughout all the regions of northern Greece, the Ionian Islands, but especially in Albania, for the Christian people there were in great ignorance because of the oppression and cruelty of the Moslems. Finally, in 1776, after having greatly strengthened and enlightened the faithful, working many signs and wonders all the while, he was falsely accused by the leaders of the Jewish people and was executed by strangulation by the Moslem Turks in Albania.
When Saint Dionysios died in 1622 A.D., his last wish was that he be buried in the Church of Saint George on the Strofades Islands where he lived as a monk. Three years after his interment there his body was found to be incorrupt. In 1717 his body was transferred from the Strofades Islands back to his home island of Zakynthos where it resides to this day.
On this day we also commemorate the translation of the holy relics of Saint Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow, which took place in the year 1646.
Our holy and wonderworking Father Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow, was born in Volhynia, tonsured a monk at twelve years of age, and later ordained a priest. He lived in solitude for a time in a desert place north of Lvov and founded the Holy Transfiguration Monastery; afterwards he was sent to Constantinople, where the holy Patriarch Athanasius consecrated him Metropolitan of Kiev in 1308, and he returned to Vladimir, where the Metropolitans of Kiev had their residence at that time (see Saint Jonas on June 15). In 1325, he moved to Moscow, where he founded the Dormition Cathedral, and after his repose in December 21, 1326, was buried there. He was also an iconographer, and two of his icons, the Dormition and the Petrovskaya, are found in the Dormition Cathedral (see Oct. 5).

Prokeimenon. Second Tone. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.
The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 9:2-12.
Brethren, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

11th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 18:23-35
The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."
