Message from Fr. Gianulis

A Great Summer Weekend

It is good to be home even after a short trip away. Returning to our beautiful Church of St. Demetrios gives me such a warm feeling and prayerful spirit. We have a beautiful house of worship. Nonetheless, there are some other wonderful churches out there as well.  Allow me to share some highlights of my weekend away and maybe in so doing offer some spiritual nuggets.

First of all, we traveled to Bethlehem (not in Palestine), PA. the Greek Orthodox Church there is St. Nicholas. It is a beautiful Byzantine style church built in the early 1960’s. An iconography project to augment the existing iconography was conducted in the early 1990’s. They completed the iconography according to the contemporary trend and Byzantine tradition, “an open book of the illiterate”. The sanctuary is beautiful and a testimony to the Gospel, as our sanctuary will be as well. Our completion date is in November. We in the Orthodox Church around the world are experiencing a renaissance of Byzantine iconography that is adorning our churches not only in America, but in Greece and elsewhere as well. It is a reflection of a world-wide awakening to the Orthodox Tradition. God is working miracles.

The wedding service went well and Fr. Alexandros Petrides was very gracious to me. The bride and groom were handsome and full of dreams. I spoke to them about C. S. Lewis’s book The Four Loves and encouraged them to never lose any of the four loves: Sorge (affection), Philia (friendship), Eros (romance), and Agape (sacrificial love or charity).

The town of Bethlehem is unique and charming. If you ever get a chance to visit, I recommend it. By visit, I don’t mean zip by on the interstate. Go into town, have dinner, and enjoy the evening charm.

We also managed to take our grandchildren on a water rafting trip down the Lehigh River. It was fun, scenic, and historic. A good break and memory-making family time. That is ever so important. Find the time, I urge you, with your children and yes, your grandchildren.

We finished the trip with a visit to Holy Protection (Αγια Σκεπη) Monastery. In our Orthodox heritage, the word monastery refers to both male and female communities. We don’t use the term convent. In this monastery reside women monastics (nuns) led by the Abbess Gerontissa Olympiada.

The nuns were ever so gracious and hospitable. The Great Vespers and Apodeipnon services were spiritually uplifting. I have always appreciated an all-female Byzantine monastic choir with their delicate and melodic voices. This did not disappoint.

I would encourage you to visit this special place and perhaps, one day, we might bring a group from St. Demetrios on a pilgrimage. Let’s see if we can find a date and the ways and means.

APPRECIATION LUNCHEON

On Sunday, August 17, following the Divine Liturgy, you are invited to a luncheon in honor of our Blessed Mother the Panaghia on the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos; and in appreciation of the stewardship and resilience of our St. Demetrios parish. We want to celebrate our blessings with a special lamb shank and pasta luncheon that will be prepared by your fellow parishioners. There will be no charge for the luncheon.  Of course, free will donations are always welcome in support of the ministries of the church.

We are very excited about the iconography. The donations for the icon project have been going very well. Pledges have been received for nearly all the icons. Thanks to all of you who have made a pledge. If you have an interest in participating in this lasting legacy, please contact Father Milton, Tom Jouvanis, or Mike Thompson.  More information on our iconographers and their work can be found on their website at  https://holyicon.gr/

Help Save St. Catherine's Monastery

The leadership of Breakpoint (Colson Center) have chosen to highlight the ownership, occupancy and protection of Saint Catherine's Monastery in their July 17, 2025, radio broadcast.

"After 1,500 years of continuous Christian service, the world’s oldest monastery is being forced to close its doors. According to several sources, St. Catherine’s Monastery will be annexed by the Egyptian government and turned into a museum and tourist attraction. Though the monks won’t be kicked out yet, the ruling is the latest incident in the already precarious situation of Christians in the Middle East. "

This marks a significant advancement into the acute focus the world now has that is growing on the Egyptian government and their exercise of power to take something that is globally treasured.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Panteleimon the Great Martyr & Healer
The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 2:1-10

Timothy, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory.

Panteleimon the Great Martyr & Healer

Gospel Reading

7th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 9:27-35

At that time, as Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

7th Sunday of Matthew

Saints and Feasts

July 27

Panteleimon the Great Martyr & Healer

This Saint, who had Nicomedia as his homeland, was the son of Eustorgius and Eubula. His father was an idolater, but his mother was a Christian from her ancestors. It was through her that he was instructed in piety, and still later, he was catechized in the Faith of Christ by Saint Hermolaus (see July 26) and baptized by him. Being proficient in the physician's vocation, he practiced it in a philanthropic manner, healing every illness more by the grace of Christ than by medicines. Thus, although his parents had named him Pantoleon ("in all things a lion"), because of the compassion he showed for the souls and bodies of all, he was worthily renamed Panteleimon, meaning "all-merciful." On one occasion, when he restored the sight of a certain blind man by calling on the Divine Name, he enlightened also the eyes of this man's soul to the knowledge of the truth. This also became the cause for the martyrdom of him who had been blind, since when he was asked by whom and in what manner his eyes had been opened, in imitation of that blind man of the Gospel he confessed with boldness both who the physician was and the manner of his healing. For this he was put to death immediately. Panteleimon was arrested also, and having endured many wounds, he was finally beheaded in the year 305, during the reign of Maximian. Saint Panteleimon is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is held in special honor among them, even as Saint George is among the Martyrs.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Tone

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Apolytikion for Great Martyr Panteleimon in the Third Tone

Panteleimon, saintly champion and healer, intercede with our merciful God to grant our souls remission of sins.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Tone

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Wisdom of the Fathers

He puts an end to the woman's fear ... He sets her right, in respect of her thinking to be hid ... He exhibits her faith to all, so as to provoke the rest also to emulation ...
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 31 on Matthew 9, 4th Century

And then at last He for His part lays His hand upon them, saying, "According to your faith be it unto you." And this He does to confirm their faith, and to show that they are participators in the good work ...
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 32 on Matthew 9, 4th Century
