We are in the dog days of summer, a beautiful time of the year when the days, though hot and muggy, are producing great produce. The fruits and vegetables are sweet and ripe. Enjoy the harvest!
Gathering together for prayer especially on the Lord's Day (Kyriake), singing of hymns, prayer and fasting were common practices of early Christians (see Acts 13:3; 14:23). The Church encourages the faithful to observe these practices frequently in their efforts to reach higher and more meaningful levels of spiritual awareness. Our Lord's personal example, too, stresses the need for fasting and prayer (Matthew 4:1-11).
The Theotokos, or Blessed Virgin Mary, is held in high esteem for Orthodox Christians. She is first among all saints. A name that is recalled frequently with the lips of the devout faithful.
During the first fifteen days of August, Greek Orthodox Christians all over the world observe a special time of fasting and prayer, which culminates with the Feastday of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Koimisis tis Theotokos) on August 15th. This mid-summer spiritual rest, may certainly be a welcome change in the routine of our daily lives.
We are fortunate that the fast in our Church invites us to enjoy the fruits and vegetables. Let us do our best to observe the fast and attend the Paraklesis services and the Divine Liturgy on the Great Feast of the Dormition.
