Greek Folk Dance begins today. Children's groups practice after Sunday School. Adults follow children’s classes.

Coffee Hour - enjoy a gyro to support our parish and ministries (and we'll supply the coffee!)

Kassia the Hymnographer

St. Kassia is one of the first composers whose scores are both extant and able to be interpreted by modern scholars and musicians. Approximately 50 of her hymns are extant and 23 are included in the Orthodox Church liturgical books.

She was born between 805 and 810 in Constantinople into an wealthy family and grew to be exceptionally beautiful and intelligent. In 843 she founded a monastery in the west of Constantinople and became its first abbess. She had a close relationship with the nearby monastery of Stoudios, which played a central role in re-editing the Byzantine liturgical books in the 9th and 10th centuries, thus ensuring the survival of her work.

St. Kassia wrote many hymns, the most famous being the Hymn of Kassia, sung on Holy Wednesday.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Mode

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Theotokos' Nativity Forefeast in the 4th Mode

From the root of Jesse and the loins of David the King, Mariam, the child of God, is born for our sake this day. Hence, all creation exulteth on its renewal. Both Heaven and the earth rejoice together now. Praise her, O ye tribes of nations here below. The righteous Joachim rejoiceth, and Anna keepeth feast, crying out: The barren beareth the Theotokos, the nourisher of our life.

Apolytikion for the Church in the 4th Mode

As the first in rank of the Apostles and teachers of the world, intercede with the Master of all that He grant peace unto all the world and great mercy unto our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 3rd Mode

On this day the virgin Maid, Mary the true Theotokos, * the inviolate bridal room of the heavenly Bridegroom, * by the will of God is born of a barren woman, * to prepare to be the carriage of God the Logos, * as for this she had been destined, * to be the gateway of God and Mother of Life.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

Sunday before Holy Cross

Gospel Reading

Sunday before Holy Cross
The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Sunday before Holy Cross

Announcements

Community

A procession with the Holy Cross will take place Sun, Sep 14, at the end of Orthos. Please arrive by 9:30am to see the procession.

Children's Homily will take place on Sun, Sep 28, in honor of Youth and Young Adult Sunday. After the Gospel reading, Fr. John will call children up to the Solea for a special homily. Arrive by 10am to make sure you don't miss the homily!

Coffee hour is one of the most important ways we can welcome visitors to our parish and encourage fellowship between parishioners. If you are able to sponsor a coffee hour, please contact the church office. A host is needed on these Sundays:

  • Sept. 14th (feast of Holy Cross)
  • Sept. 21st
  • Sept. 28th

Pastoral Reminders

If you would like to schedule a confession, please contact the church office to coordinate a time to meet with Fr. John.

We will continue to stand during the Consecration of the holy Gifts on Sundays, at the request of His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos. This is the traditional practice of our Church (kneeling is reserved for Liturgies during the week). Each Sunday is a "little Pascha"— a day of joy for the resurrection which is set apart from the rest of the week. Although we will be standing, we should remain reverent with our heads bowed.

We have received notice about the current uncanonical standing of St. Nina Monastery in Union Bridge. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. John.

Please note that Holy Communion, Unction, and other sacraments are reserved for baptized/chrismated Orthodox Christians in good-standing. Please contact Fr. John if you have any questions.

Please blot or remove any lip products before venerating icons and before approaching for Holy Communion to protect our liturgical items.

If you or a loved one need hospital or long-term care, please call the church office to schedule a visit from Fr. John.

Memorial Services can be offered for our departed loved ones. If you are not able to make kollyva, a Trisagion service can still be offered. Please call the church office to schedule.

Give to Support our Church

When Jesus fed five thousand people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, He showed us how God’s love can multiply the effects of our generosity.

Stewardship supports our parish ministries and helps spread the Gospel message to Frederick and the surrounding areas. Pick up a 2025 Stewardship Card in the Narthex, or visit stspeterpaul.net/give. Thank you for your generous support!

Accessibility Project: To ensure that the church and hall of our beloved parish are open to all parishioners, inquirers, and visitors, Sts. Peter and Paul has approved an Accessibility Project to install a street-level ramp for access to the church and an ADA lift to allow access from the Narthex to the Social Hall. While a generous grant from Leadership 100 is providing funds to assist our parish in this effort, we also need the support and generosity of our Sts. Peter and Paul family to make this vision a reality. Please consider making a gift or a pledge today to help make Orthodoxy accessible to all! Donate at stspeterpaul.net/give

Altar Keepers Fund helps us purchase and replenish liturgical items. Please donate through our parish App, our website, or by check.
