August 17

Myron the Martyr of Cyzicus

Saint Myron was a priest during the reign of Decius, when Antipater was ruler of Achaia. On the day of our Lord's Nativity, Antipater entered the church to seize the Christians and punish them. Saint Myron, kindled with holy zeal, roundly insulted Antipater, for which he was hung up and scraped, then cast into a raging furnace, but was preserved unharmed. When Myron refused to worship the idols, Antipater commanded that strips be cut in the Saint's flesh from his shoulders to his feet; the Saint took one of the strips of his flesh and flung it in the tyrant's face. He was beaten, and scraped again upon his beaten flesh; then he was thrown to wild beasts, but when Antipater saw them leaving off their fierce nature and protecting the Saint from harm, he was overcome with unbearable shame and slew himself. The Saint was then sent to Cyzicus, where the proconsul had him beheaded, about the year 250.

He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Ministries Sunday is Sun, Aug. 24. After Liturgy, head down to the social hall to register for ministries for the 2025-2026 year.

Greek School classes begin again this September. Adult Classes (online) will be held on Wednesdays, starting September 10th; and Youth Classes (in-person) will begin on Friday, September 12th. Coffee hour is one of the most important ways we can welcome visitors to our parish and encourage fellowship between parishioners. If you are able to sponsor a coffee hour, please contact the church office. A host is needed on these Sundays:

Pastoral Reminders

If you would like to schedule a confession, please contact the church office to coordinate a time to meet with Fr. John.

We will continue to stand during the Consecration of the holy Gifts on Sundays, at the request of His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos. This is the traditional practice of our Church (kneeling is reserved for Liturgies during the week). Each Sunday is a "little Pascha"— a day of joy for the resurrection which is set apart from the rest of the week. Although we will be standing, we should remain reverent with our heads bowed.

We have received notice about the current uncanonical standing of St. Nina Monastery in Union Bridge. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. John.

Please note that Holy Communion, Unction, and other sacraments are reserved for baptized/chrismated Orthodox Christians in good-standing. Please contact Fr. John if you have any questions.

Please blot or remove any lip products before venerating icons and before approaching for Holy Communion to protect our liturgical items.

Memorial Services can be offered for our departed loved ones. If you are not able to make kollyva, a Trisagion service can still be offered. Please call the church office to schedule.
