Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Second Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back - it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, He is not here; see the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him, as He told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 1st Tone. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16.

Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Gospel Reading

2nd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 4:18-23

At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Prayer, fasting, vigil and all other Christian practices, however good they may be in themselves, do not constitute the aim of our Christian life, although they serve as the indispensable means of reaching this end. The true aim of our Christian life consists in the acquisition of the Holy Spirit of God.
St. Seraphim of Sarov
The Acquisition of the Holy Spirit: Chapter 3, The Little Russian Philokalia Vol. 1; Saint Herman of Alaska Brotherhood pg. 79, 19th century

FRIENDS OF HARRY CASHY – ST HERMAN HOUSE GOLF SPONSORSHIP

Our friend Harry cared very much about St. Herman’s and its mission.  In 2017, a year after Harry’s passing, a few of us organized a sponsorship by the “Friends of Harry Cashy” to support St. Herman’s in memory of Harry. Last year, the golf outing/auction netted just over $86,500 for St. Herman’s, more than 10% of its cash operating budget. With your generous support, we the Friends of Harry have raised over $67,000 in the last seven years for St. Herman’s in Harry’s memory.

The 2025 St. Herman’s Golf Classic will be July 15 this year at the Elyria Country Club, and we are again putting together a sponsorship in memory of Harry. If you are interested in donating as part of the Friends of Harry, please contact Gus Kallergis ([email protected] or 216.410.6306). Those wishing to donate online can do so by  (1) clicking https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/weblink.aspx?name=E334599&id=336(2) scrolling to and checking the “Make a Contribution” box, (3) selecting the amount and checking the “St. Herman Golf Donor - Friend of Harry Cashy”, and (4) clicking the next button and finishing the submission. Please let Gus know once this has been completed.

COMMUNITY POTLUCK COFFEE HOUR

We’ve noticed that sometimes there aren’t coffee hosts signed up for Sunday coffee hour, and we want to make sure we still have a time for fellowship and connection.

On these Sundays, we’re introducing a new concept: Community Potluck Coffee Hour! We will provide the coffee, cream, sugar, and paper products, but we ask that each person or family bring a small offering to share. It could be as simple as cookies, donuts, or
pastries—whatever you'd like to contribute!

This is a great way to share in the spirit of community, and it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Let’s come together and make these Sundays extra special.

Thank you for helping make Coffee Hour a warm and welcoming place for everyone!

ST. MAKRINA ZOOM BIBLE STUDY

Please join St. Makrina Bible Study! We are reading the book- "Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis.

“Lewis discusses that everyone is curious about: right and wrong, human nature, morality, marriage, sins, forgiveness, faith, hope, generosity, and kindness.”

We meet every Wednesday from 9:30-11am over Zoom. You do not have to attend every session and can contribute to the discussions as much or as little as you wish. The book can be purchased through Amazon. Please contact Toni Madden at [email protected] for the Zoom link. We would love for you to join us!

ZOOM BOOK GROUP

We are reading Living the Beatitudes: Perspectives From Orthodox Spirituality, written by Fr Thomas Fitzgerald, Th.D (of Blessed memory) former Dean and Prof at Holy Cross School of Theology and Presb Kyriaki Fitzgerald, M.Div., Ph.D, psychologist and adjunct prof at Holy Cross School of Theology. The authors teach us how to practice the Beatitudes and integrate them into our daily lives, to imitate Christ and to become His disciples.

We Zoom weekly on Thursday evenings at 7-8pm starting on May 1 for 8 weeks. If interested, contact Cynthia Terezis at [email protected] to be added to the Zoom email invite and to place an order for the book ($20) through the bookstore at the Church Library (also available at holycrossbookstore.com and Amazon).

CHURCH COMMUNICATIONS

Our weekly bulletin contains announcements and links of interest to the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Community.  Unfortunately, we have had some recent issues with false signups to our mailing list and may have lost some actual parishioners email addresses in dealing with the issue.
If you did not receive this week’s bulletin or other recent church notices and think you should have, please contact the office. You can also sign up for it here:

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 1st Tone

Although the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers guarded Your most pure body, You arose on the third day, O Savior, giving life to the world. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried out to you, O Giver of Life: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your kingdom! Glory to Your dispensation, only Lover of Mankind!

Apolytikion for the Church in the Plagal 4th Tone

Your Apostle among the Rulers, St. Constantine, who once beheld in the sky the image of Your Cross, and who like Paul received his calling not from man, once entrusted the Ruling City into Your hand. We entreat You to restore it in peace forever, at the intercession of the Theotokos, O Lord who loves humanity. (Copyright Fr. Seraphim Dedes, used by permission. All rights reserved)

Seasonal Kontakion in the 2nd Tone

A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, please reject not the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.
