Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking spices, which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered His words and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the Apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15.

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

He who truly wishes to believe in God must be lifted above himself, his mind, and even the whole world. For this reason, the value of faith is considered higher than the value of man. It is even higher than the value of the whole world. Therefore, the reward of faith should be higher than all of man's possessions along with the glories of this world. The reward of faith is God.

METALLINOS GUITAR WORKSHOP

Whether you are making music or just listening to it, time can go by fast, and so it has. Please come and help us start our second year of MGW sessions on Tuesday, October 8, at 7pm in the conference room. Attendees are asked to pick a tune of their liking (perhaps with a Fall theme) to demonstrate and share it with the group. SUNSHINE GROUP

The next Sunshine Lunch is Thursday, October 10 at 1 PM.  We are meeting at The Rustic Grill at Stonewater.  The address is 1 Club Drive, Aberdeen in Highland Heights.  Please let Maria Cashy know if you can attend.  In November, our lunch will be November 14 at 1 PM.  All are welcome, please join us!


IOCC WINE TASTING FUNDRAISER

The annual wine tasting event to support IOCC will take place on Monday, October 21, 6:00 PM, at Woodside Event Center at St Michael's, 5025 Mill Rd, Broadview Heights. Tickets at $70, including a 4-course dinner and the tasting, can be purchased from Fr Stephen.


HPS AUTHOR EVENT

Emmy Award winning producer and author Yvette Manessis Corporon is coming to Cleveland.  She will discuss her newest release "daughter of ruins" on November 2 at 11 AM at Sts Constantine and Helen Cathedral.  Please join the HPS Board at this marvelous event you will not want to miss.  A lunch buffet and a book is included in the ticket price of $50.  Please see anyone from the Library Committee, Renee Sadler, or Maria Cashy for details.  You can also find information and purchase tickets at the Hellenic Preservation Society website: hpsneo.org


FALL RETREAT

The Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral St. Makrina Bible Study present a Fall Retreat, Saturday November 9, 2024 from 10 am to 3 pm. There will be a Liturgy of St. Nektarios on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and retreat to follow.

Father Stavros Akrotirianakis will speak on "Finding Gratitude". Tickets, including breakfast & lunch, are $10 ($15 after Sunday Nov 3rd). Make checks payable to Sts Constantine and Helen and put 'retreat' in the memo. For more information, contact Anna Warren at 216 287-6890


CHIOS SOCIETY DANCE

The Chios Society - Cleveland Ch. #7 will hold its Annual Dinner Dance at Annunciation (Tremont) Ballroom on Saturday November 9, 2024. ORTHODOX EDUCATION NEWS

Orthodox Education:  We resumed classes as of Sunday, September 8th for grades Pre-K (3-4 yo) through 12th grade. GOYA / YOUNG ADULT ACTIVITIES

1) HOPE/JOY Families (Kindergarten - 6th grade) are invited to a field trip to Patterson's Family Fun Fest on Friday, October 11th at 1:00 p.m. (NEOEA Day when many schools are closed). Tickets are $5 per person, and 2 and under are free. Attractions include: "covered straw pile, slides, pedal tractors, push carts, tire swings, corn maze, and more!" RSVP to Ted by Sunday, October 6th.

2) GOYA will visit St. Mary of Egypt Food Bank on Saturday, October 19th from 12:00 noon - 3:00 p.m. This will be our fall service project. Send RSVPs and any questions to Ted.

3)  Parenting Book Club will have its first meeting on Sunday, October 20th in the downstairs Alcove following OE classes. We will be reading, "Parenting Towards the Kingdom" by Dr. Philip Mamalakis, available at Ancient Faith Ministries or Amazon. Our discussion will be on the first two chapters (35 pages). 4) Camp Nazareth will host a Young Adult Retreat the weekend of October 25th - 27th. Alex Balouris will speak on, "Caring for God's Creation: The Self." Registration is now live at: https://tinyURL.com/YAFALL2024. With any questions, contact: [email protected].

5) Our annual parish "Fall Fest" will occur on Sunday, October 27th for all HOPE, JOY, and GOYA families from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.. It will be a wonderful event with friends, games, candy, costumes, musical chairs, and more! We look forward to seeing you then. Contact Ted with any questions.


JUNIOR HELLENIC DANCERS

The Junior Hellenic Dancer Group are starting once a month group practices tentatively in the Fellowship Room. Our first practice will take place on October 13th and  will last approximately one hour 11:30-12:30 tentatively in the Fellowship Room.  New dancers are welcome and encouraged to come and join us.  New dancers will need to be turning 7 during the year of the festival.  Please feel free to text Elena Willis at 216-225-7469 or Chantel Covino at 216-618-8436 with any questions and one of us will get back to you.


ST. MAKRINA ZOOM BIBLE STUDY

Please join St. Makrina Bible Study! We are reading the book - "Mary, as the Early Christians Knew Her" by Frederica Mathewes-Green. 

We meet every Wednesday from 9:30-11am over Zoom. You do not have to attend every session and can contribute to the discussions as much or as little as you wish. GRIEF ZOOM BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
