Dearest Parish Families,

With the recent appointment of a new Archbishop in Canada and the recent appointment of a new Metropolitan in New Jersey, you, reading this, might find it very interesting to know what exactly happens when (and how) a Bishop is elected to and enthroned in the responsibilities of his office.

As we know, there are three levels of the Holy Priesthood:  The first level is that of the Deacon.  The second level is the Priest (the “Presbyter”).  And the final level is that of the Bishop.

Beyond these three levels, the Orthodox Church recognizes the need for administration and, so, creates a hierarchy of order.  The positions of Archbishop and Bishop are equal.  However, the Orthodox Church employs a wonderful phrase, which says in Latin, “Primus Inter Pares.” In English, this phrase means “First Among Equals.”  Therefore, in understanding the hierarchy of our Orthodox Church, we recognize that, while the Office of the Bishop is the highest order within the ranks of the Holy Priesthood, we recognize the Order within that Priestly Rank of the Office of the Archbishop, and of the Metropolitan, and of the Patriarch (all an ascending order of Equals).

So, in the administration of the Church, the laity are spiritually led by the Deacon and the Priest, who are in turn led by the Bishops, who are in turn led by the Archbishop, who is in turn led by the Patriarch.

When the need for a Bishop is recognized by the Archdiocese, the Archbishop gathers a meeting of his Synod (Council) of Bishops. Together, under the Archbishop’s spiritual guidance, the Synod submits names of candidates for the Episcopate, whom they feel worthy of elevation to the Office of Episcopacy.  From these submitted names, a list of three candidates is chosen.  These three names are then submitted to our Holy Patriarchate in Constantinople.  The Patriarch Himself then gathers his Synod of Metropolitans and, after the calling of the Holy Spirit (h epiklhsi" tou Agiou Pneumato"), prayerfully elects one of the worthy candidates to the position of Episcopacy.

Upon the announcement by the Patriarchate to the Archdiocese of the Bishop’s election, the Archbishop announces the news to his people.  At that time, the Archbishop holds a special ceremony (usually during a Great Vespers Service), in which he gives the official announcement of the Bishop-elect.  This is known as the “message”).  Between this time and the coming time of the official enthronement, the Bishop is referred to as the “Bishop-elect.”

The final stage of the new Bishop’s election is known as the Official “Enthronement” of the Bishop to his assigned area.  This enthronement always takes place in the Cathedral Church of the new Bishop’s area.

 Faithfully, Father Samaras

9th Morning Gospel Lesson

On October 18, we commemorate the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke; the holy Martyr Marinos the elder; our devout father Julian of the Evphrates; Saint Mnason, Bishop of Cyprus, and the holy Forty Children died by the sword; the holy newly appeared Martyrs Gabriel and Kyrmidoles who contested in Egypt in the year 1522. We also commemorate our devout fathers Symeon and Theodore, and the devout woman Efrosyne, who found the holy icon of the Mother of God and started the Monastery of the Great Cave.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the heavens be glad. Let the earth rejoice exceedingly. For the Lord has shown strength with his arm. He trampled death by death. He became the first-born of the dead. Out of the belly of Hades, He has rescued us, and to the world He has granted the great mercy.

Apolytikion for Luke the Evangelist in the Third Mode

O Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Apolytikion of Saint John the Baptist in the First Mode

The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, please reject not the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in My side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and My God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life in His name.

Ninth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 18.4,1.
Their voice has gone out into all the earth.
Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians 4:5-11, 14-18.

Brethren, conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer every one. Tychicos will tell you all about my affairs; he is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him Onesimos, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of yourselves. They will tell you of everything that has taken place. Aristarchos my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions if he comes to you, receive him), and Jesus who is called Justos. These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you. Give my greetings to the brethren at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea. And say to Archippos, "See that you fulfill the ministry which you have received in the Lord." I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my fetters. Grace be with you. Amen.

Plagal Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

Luke the Evangelist
The Reading is from Luke 10:16-21

The Lord said to his disciples, "He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" And he said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will."

Luke the Evangelist
