Always a Spiritual Focus, First
September 27th, 2026
Dearest Parish Families,
I talked about this in Church last week. How Can One Adequately Describe “Magnitude” It’s a great word to consider, especially in terms of our prayer life and our spiritual life. The Gospel lessons of the past two weeks have, in a way, spoken about Magnitude. I also remember the words of a fellow priest/friend of mine, Father Raptis, who once said to me:
We have spoken in Church. We have spoken in Sermons. We have given words to communicate. But how can words be adequate to the task of comfort and healing? In the light of these ever-ongoing events of more war, even far away from us, we have been stunned into silence. Just as it is nearly impossible to fathom the heights of Divinity, of God, so also it is equally as difficult, many times, to fully fathom the depths of evil.
I find it amazing that, after decades of America working so hard to ban Christmas Nativity scenes from public places, to ban public prayer in schools, to promote “legal” death by abortion, we are now—all of a sudden—encouraged to pray together, to pray in public, in schools, in hospitals, at political rallies, to join hands and pray for our country. Just consider the message once sent to me by my colleague, Father Raptis who says this:
Just one question: NOW that the President has called us to prayer..... NOW that Congress has called us to prayer..... NOW that our Governor has called us to prayer....NOW that the city Mayor has called us to prayer....NOW that the media and most other branches of our American society have called us to prayer.....AND NOW that our churches are assembling in special prayer.... “Honorable” Justices of the Supreme Court, I have only one question: Would it now be O.K. to pray in our schools?
Saint Silouan of Mount Athos said, “I tell you that, when we have no more men of prayer, the world will come to an end and great disaster will befall—as, indeed, is happening already.” Silouan’s biographer and spiritual son, Father Sophrony (who now has passed away), wrote that Silouan “felt prayer for enemies and for the world at large as a special gift of the Holy Spirit; and that, so long as there were vessels for this grace in the world, the world would continue to exist but, without them, no human science, no culture could avert the final catastrophe.”
And so, we must consciously remember that each of us must be that one person, that soul of prayer. This is what we are keeping up in our parish. Even as our country moves forward, we remember to do so with love and discipline. We remember to pray. As we recently shared together in Church, we work on our being able to forgive everybody in our lives, with true meaning and sincerity. Every tiny step forward helps us all together.
Faithfully, Father Samaras

The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy.
Sixth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53
At that time, having risen from the dead, Jesus went up and stood among His disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; handle Me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave Him a piece of broiled fish [and some honeycomb], and He took it and ate before them. Then He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then He opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name in all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands, He blessed them. While He blessed them, He parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the Temple blessing God.
Sixth Orthros Gospel
Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.
The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1.
Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.
Plagal Fourth Mode.
1st Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 5:1-11
At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
