† Bishop Themi of Nicopolis †

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). Known as the Great Commission, this is the final commandment given to us by Christ. Few in the history of the world have heeded this call as Bishop Themistocles of Nicopolis has.

In his youth, as a proud atheist and Marxist, he started Australia's first long-haired Rock-and-Roll band known as “The Flies”, and it grew to such popularity that they toured with “The Rolling Stones”. Having experienced a mystical vision, Themi turned to Christ. He gave all he had to the poor and was tonsured a monk. He would spend the next thirty years in theological academia studying at Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Holy Cross G.O. School of Theology, and St. Andrew's Universities. He acquired multiple doctorates and graduate degrees, becoming a world-class biblical scholar and professor. Although an accomplished theologian, he felt he was not fulfilling the Great Commission. Desiring to help the poorest of the poor, he was ordained a priest and joined the mission in Kenya. Still not satisfied he sought permission to go to the most impoverished country in the world, Sierra Leone. In 2007 permission was granted by Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa. What Themi has done since, is nothing short of miraculous. With the support of Paradise 4 Kids, a global charity that was established to help his Mission, thousands of the poorest people in West Africa have been assisted. Several churches, schools, a teacher’s college, orphanages, medical clinics, housing communities, and so much more. Bishop Themi baptized hundreds into the Orthodox Church, and untold thousands have been helped through the Mission. In 2022, by unanimous vote of the Holy Synod of Africa, Themi was elevated to the Episcopacy and given the title Bishop of Nicopolis. He now oversees the Archdiocesan District of Sierra Leone, comprised of seven nations in West Africa.

Saint John Chrysostom wrote that it is a greater deed to feed the hungry than it is to raise the dead. As Orthodox Christians, we understand that the Great Commission was not just given to the Apostles, but it is Christ’s direct call to action for each of us. Not all of us are able to leave our lives and go to the ends of the earth for the sake of poor in the name of Christ. Yet we can fulfill the commandment in other ways and help the needy.

Please pray for His Grace Bishop Themi and for his Holy Mission, that the Lord may grant him many more years to serve His Church!

The Sacrament of Holy Confession:

When an Orthodox Christian repents & comes to Holy Confession, God grants forgiveness of sins and help in the struggle against sin, the passions and the influences of the evil one. We have a printed booklet with useful information which helps the faithful better prepare for the Sacrament of Holy Confession. The booklet is free and available for everyone who wishes to use it. Pick up your copy today from the table outside the Church office. To make an appointment for confession call Fr. Peter directly on his cell, 973-650-9717.

Bell Tower Repairs:

We would like to inform our community that repair work on the bell tower continues. Access to the doors in the front of the church will be blocked from Monday through Friday. For all matters, please enter the building through the gym doors during the week.

Holy Communion Line:

We remind everyone that the Communion line is to be formed in the center aisle, and once you receive, depart to the right or to the left to return to your seat. When Sunday School is in session, children and their teachers will come up first. Infants may be brought up to the front of the line at any time. Please remain at your seat, (you may sit if you need to), and enter the center aisle once the Parish Council members indicate that it is time for people in your pew to come up. While you are waiting, you may read the prayers for before Holy Communion on page 76. Once you return to your seat, please read the thanksgiving prayers for after Holy Communion on page 90. This is one of the most sacred moments of the service, so please treat it accordingly, refrain from talking and be respectful and prayerful. Also, please wipe any excess lipstick from your lips before coming to the Holy Chalice and no chewing gum during services. Thank you.

Orthodox Faith Orientation Classes:

Classes on Orthodoxy have begun. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact the church office at 973.779.2626 or [email protected]. There will be eight (8) sessions on Thursdays at 7:00 pm. We are currently studying the Divine Liturgy.

Orthodox Life Institute:

Classes meet on Tuesdays at 7:00pm via ZOOM. If you are interested in joining us, send your email address and contact information to Lisa Marcopulos at [email protected] and we will send you the ZOOM invitation. The class will be studying 1^st & 2^nd Corinthians and the problems of the early church and compare them to contemporary issues in the church. The Fall semester ends on December 17, 2024.

St. Iakovos (Tsalikis) of Evia:

The new Patron Saint of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of NJ is St. Iakovos (Tsalikis) of Evia. Blessed St. Iakovos of Evia is a modern-day saint who reposed in the Lord in 1991, was canonized by our Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2017, and whose Feast Day is celebrated on November 22^nd. The first celebrations for St. Iakovos of Evia as the new Patron Saint of our Metropolis will take place with Great Hierarchical Vespers on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 6:00pm with a meal to follow at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield. Then on Friday November 22, 2024 the Orthros and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be held in the Chapel of our Metropolis Headquarters in Westfield, New Jersey.

Sponsor A Day Program:

One way to help the church is through our “Sponsor A Day” program. We encourage our parishioners to select a day that has special meaning to them like a birthday, feast day, anniversary or a memorial and make a suggested donation of $250. We would like to thank Angeliki Antoniou for sponsoring November 9^th, the Feast Day of St. Nectarios in memory of her husband Antonis Antoniou. Feast Day Flower and Icon Donations:

During the Ecclesiastical year, our Church comes alive with many Liturgical services. It is customary in our faith to decorate icons used during special Feast Day services with flowers. We encourage our parishioners to offer this special donation as a unique and appropriate way to remember departed friends and relatives, as well as an expression of love on behalf of their family and prayers for their loved ones. Donations are now being accepted for the following Feast Day celebrations:

We invite you and your family to participate in our spiritual, outreach, social and youth ministries. For those that have never given an annual gift, we need your help. Our community has nearly $40K in monthly expenses and the annual stewardship is the primary program that raises funds for us to meet our obligations. You can make a difference today with your participation. We understand that philanthropy is something very personal. Each person is invited to give according to their ability. Artemius the Great Martyr of Antioch

Saint Artemius lived during the years of Saint Constantine the Great, and was appointed by him to be Governor of Alexandria; later, he was honoured with the rank of patrician. During the reign of Julian the Apostate, in the year 361, Artemius appeared before the Emperor and censured him for his apostasy. For this, he endured many torments and was finally beheaded.

Gerasimos of Cephalonia

Saint Gerasimus was from the Peloponnesus, the son of Demetrius and Kale, of the family of Notaras. He was reared in piety by them and studied the Sacred writings. He left his country and went throughout various lands, and finally came to Cephalonia, where he restored a certain old church and built a convent around it, where it stands to this day at the place called Omala. He finished the course of his life there in asceticism in the year 1570. His sacred relics, which remain incorrupt, are kept there for the sanctification of the faithful.

James the Apostle, brother of Our Lord

According to some, this Saint was a son of Joseph the Betrothed, born of the wife that the latter had before he was betrothed to the Ever-virgin. Hence he was the brother of the Lord, Who was also thought to be the son of Joseph (Matt. 13: 55). But some say that he was a nephew of Joseph, and the son of his brother Cleopas, who was also called Alphaeus and Mary his wife, who was the first cousin of the Theotokos. But even according to this genealogy, he was still called, according to the idiom of the Scriptures, the Lord's brother because of their kinship.

This Iakovos is called the Less (Mark 15:40) by the Evangelists to distinguish him from Iakovos, the son of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem, elevated to this episcopal rank by the Apostles, according to Eusebius (Eccl. Hist., Book II: 23), and was called Obliah, that is, the Just, because of his great holiness and righteousness. Having ascended the crest of the Temple on the day of the Passover at the prompting of all, he bore testimony from there concerning his belief in Jesus, and he proclaimed with a great voice that Jesus sits at the right hand of the great power of God and shall come again upon the clouds of heaven. On hearing this testimony, many of those present cried, "Hosanna to the Son of David." But the Scribes and Pharisees cried, "So, even the just one hath been led astray," and at the command of Ananias the high priest, the Apostle was cast down headlong from thence, then was stoned, and while he prayed for his slayers, his head was crushed by the wooden club wielded by a certain scribe. The first of the Catholic (General) Epistles written to the Jews in the Diaspora who believed in Christ was written by this Iakovos.

Marcianos and Martyrios the Notaries

These Martyrs were disciples of Saint Paul the Confessor (see Nov. 6). Martyrius was a subdeacon, Marcian a chanter and reader. They were beheaded by the Arians in the year 346. Miracles were wrought at their tomb, and demons were cast out; Saint John Chrysostom began the building of the church in their honour in Constantinople, and it was completed by patriarch Sisinius.

When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἐλθόντι τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν, ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντίπερα τῆς Γαλιλαίας. ἐξελθόντι δὲ αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἀνήρ τις ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, ὃς εἶχε δαιμόνια ἐκ χρόνων ἱκανῶν, καὶ ἱμάτιον οὐκ ἐνεδιδύσκετο καὶ ἐν οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἔμενεν, ἀλλ᾿ ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν. ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν ᾿Ιησοῦν καὶ ἀνακράξας προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἶπε· τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, ᾿Ιησοῦ, υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου; δέομαί σου, μή με βασανίσῃς. παρήγγειλε γὰρ τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ ἐξελθεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. πολλοῖς γὰρ χρόνοις συνηρπάκει αὐτόν, καὶ ἐδεσμεῖτο ἁλύσεσι καὶ πέδαις φυλασσόμενος, καὶ διαρρήσσων τὰ δεσμὰ ἠλαύνετο ὑπὸ τοῦ δαίμονος εἰς τὰς ἐρήμους. ἐπηρώτησε δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς λέγων· τί σοί ἐστιν ὄνομα; ὁ δὲ εἶπε· λεγεών· ὅτι δαιμόνια πολλὰ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς αὐτόν· καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν ἵνα μὴ ἐπιτάξῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν. ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἀγέλη χοίρων ἱκανῶν βοσκομένων ἐν τῷ ὄρει· καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν· καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς. ἐξελθόντα δὲ τὰ δαιμόνια ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ ἀπεπνίγη. ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ βόσκοντες τὸ γεγενημένον ἔφυγον, καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς. ἐξῆλθον δὲ ἰδεῖν τὸ γεγονός, καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν ᾿Ιησοῦν καὶ εὗρον καθήμενον τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἀφ᾿ οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐξεληλύθει, ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ ᾿Ιησοῦ, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν. ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιμονισθείς. καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο. αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν. ἐδέετο δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἀνήρ, ἀφ᾿ οὗ ἐξεληλύθει τὰ δαιμόνια, εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ· ἀπέλυσε δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς λέγων· ὑπόστρεφε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου καὶ διηγοῦ ὅσα ἐποίησέ σοι ὁ Θεός. καὶ ἀπῆλθε καθ᾿ ὅλην τὴν πόλιν κηρύσσων ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For if we, going about on the earth which is familiar and well known to us, being encompassed with a body, when we are journeying in a strange road, know not which way to go unless we have some one to lead us; how should the soul, being rent away from the body, and having gone out from all her accustomed region, know where to walk without one to show her the way?

Some say, 'Why do they [demons] possess people?' I answer those who wish to have this explained that the reason of these things is very deep. Somewhere one of His saints addressed God by saying, 'Your judgments are a vast abyss.' As long as we bear this in mind, we will perhaps not miss the mark.
