COMMEMORATIONS THIS WEEK  Tuesday, 27 August - Great Martyr Phanourious; Wednesday, 28 August - St. Moses the Black of Scete; Thursday 29 August - the Beheading of St. John the Forerunner.  Note:  this Thursday is held as a strict fast day in commemoration of St. John the Forerunner's tragic departure from this life.  So, there are three days of consecutive fasting this week.   

PRAYER REQUESTS   Please continue to remember two Orthodox "sisters in Christ" recovering from strokes (slow, but sure), Panagiota (Jaye) and Seraphima (Linnea).  Also, please remember Pat Egan whose eyesight is limiting her options, but not her enthusiasm for serving the Christ and the Church--thank God!  Your prayers for all these dear women will be of great assistance.  Fr. Scott from Christ the Savior in Brewer is recovering well from a recent surgery, and is gaining back his strength.  The family thanks you for your prayers!  

MEMORY ETERNAL! Please remember Jack & Areti who are processing grief over the loss of Areti's father, Demetrios (he was laid to rest last week in Greece) and also Anthony & Mona, sorrowing over the departure of Mona's grandmother, Barket, last Sunday morning in Pakistan.  Mona is there with her family now and will return home on September 1.  May God grant eternal memory for the beloved departed ones and consolation to their families!  Notes of sympathy can be sent to:  Jack & Areti Baldwin / 232 Main Street / Rockland, ME  04841 and Anthony & Mona Dougherty / Dougherty Family / 29 High Street / Old Town, ME  04468. 

OUR RELIQUARY  The Saints' relics entrusted to our church are often available for veneration when you enter the nave. They are in the front of the church, in the reliquary on the table before the icon of St. George.  You may approach to venerate them when you arrive.  You will sometimes find they emit a sweet fragrance on their own.  One of the Saints whose relics are in the reliquary is St. Timothy, Archbishop of Evripos, from the 14th century.  His relic is on the left side of the box (all the relics are labeled). St. Timothy's Feast Day was the 16th of this month.  Let us honor his holy relics which bring grace to our modest church!  Also the center relic in our reliquary is a relic of St. George (this is a great honor for our church which is named for him)!  The relic on the right side belongs to the Sainted monastic martyrs of Sinai and Raithu.  There were two martyrdoms which occurred at those sites--one in the fourth century, one in the fifth.  This group of martyrs is remembered on January 14 each year.  Learn more here:  https://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2011/01/holy-fathers-slain-at-sinai-and-raithu.html.  Wondrous is God in His Saints!

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ST. TIMOTHY OF EVRIPOS?  A relic of St. Timothy, Archbishop of Evripos, (14th century) is found near the left side in our reliquary.  Not only was the Saint a faithful shepherd of God's flock during his lifetime, he was also a monastery founder.  The Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery at Penteli (Greece) was established by him.  The monastery remains active.  St. Timothy dedicated his life and ministry for God's glory, and proved himself a worthy example for each of us.  Most people are not aware of his hagiography, so here is a link where you can listen and learn more:  https://www.ancientfaith.com/podcasts/hiddensaints/st_timothy_archbishop_of_evripos_aug_16/.  And, here is a link to info on the Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery at Penteli: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dormition_of_Theotokos_Monastery  Holy one of God, pray for us! 

WOULD YOU BAKE SOME PROSFORA?  Our supply of breads is dwindling.  If you can bake prosfora, would you kindly let Fr. Leo tknow that you will be bringing Bread of Offering in the near future?  The breads are stored in the freezer in the hall kitchen.  If you would like to learn to prepare the bread, but don't own a bread seal, let Pres. know and one can be ordered for you.  The cost for a seal is $20.

COULD YOU HELP AN ORTHODOX STUDENT IN MAINE?  The son of an Orthodox family (known to us) will be a student at Eastern Maine Community College studying diesel mechanics this fall.  The family lives a little too far away for a daily commute and are hoping their son could find a suitable small apartment or room in someone's home while he's a student.  Would anyone be able to offer him a rental arrangment for the coming academic year?  Please contact Fr.
