WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Whether you are new to Bangor or if you're just passing through - welcome! Please don't hesitate to introduce yourself to someone you've never met and consider staying for some refreshments and fellowship after the morning service. If you would like to receive mailings or otherwise stay in touch, please leave your contact information (name, address, phone, email) with the person in the church office.

WITH GLADNESS FILL MY HEART, MOST HOLY VIRGIN LADY  Our hearts were filled with joy during the vesperal Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Holy Dormition last Wednesday evening.  Special thanks to Gabriya who decorated the icon of the Dormition for the occasion.

MEMORY ETERNAL!  Areti's father, Demetrios, departed this life on Friday, Aug 16.  He lived in Greece.  Areti will be traveling there on Monday evening.  Please offer prayers for her safety as she travels.  Her aunt, Niki, also departed this life two weeks ago.  So, it is a double sorrow for the family.  Please remember the departed souls, Demetrios and Niki, to God that He grant them a blessed repose.  Kindly keep Jack and Areti in your prayers as they pass through this time of grief.  Notes of sympathy can be sent to the Baldwin Family / 232 Main Street / Rockland ME  04841.

OUR RELIQUARY  The Saints' relics entrusted to our church are often available for veneration when you enter the nave. They are in the front of the church, in the reliquary on the table before the icon of St. George.  You may approach to venerate them when you arrive.  You will sometimes find they emit a sweet fragrance on their own.  One of the Saints whose relics are in the reliquary is St. Timothy, Archbishop of Evripos, from the 14th century.  His relic is on the left side of the box (all the relics are labeled). St. Timothy's Feast Day iwas a couple days ago, Friday, Aug 16.  Let us honor his holy relics which bring grace to our modest church!  Also the center relic in our reliquary is a relic of St. George (this is a great honor for our church which is named for him)!  The relic on the right side belongs to the Sainted monastic martyrs of Sinai and Raithu.  There were two martyrdoms which occurred at those sites--one in the fourth century, one in the fifth.  This group of martyrs is remembered on January 14 each year.  Learn more here:  https://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2011/01/holy-fathers-slain-at-sinai-and-raithu.html.  Wondrous is God in His Saints!

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ST. TIMOTHY OF EVRIPOS?  A relic of St. Timothy, Archbishop of Evripos, (14th century) is found near the left side in our reliquary.  Not only was the Saint a faithful shepherd of God's flock during his lifetime, he was also a monastery founder.  The Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery at Penteli (Greece) was established by him.  The monastery remains active.  St. Timothy dedicated his life and ministry for God's glory, and proved himself a worthy example for each of us.  Most people are not aware of his hagiography, so here is a link where you can listen and learn more:  https://www.ancientfaith.com/podcasts/hiddensaints/st_timothy_archbishop_of_evripos_aug_16/.  And, here is a link to info on the Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery at Penteli: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dormition_of_Theotokos_Monastery  Holy one of God, pray for us!

WOULD YOU BAKE SOME PROSFORA?  Our supply of breads is dwindling.  If you can bake prosfora, would you kindly let Fr. Leo tknow that you will be bringing Bread of Offering in the near future?  The breads are stored in the freezer in the hall kitchen.  If you would like to learn to prepare the bread, but don't own a bread seal, let Pres. know and one can be ordered for you.  The cost for a seal is $20.

PRAYER REQUESTS   Please continue to remember two Orthodox "sisters in Christ" recovering from strokes (slow, but sure), Panagiota (Jaye) and Seraphima (Linnea).  Also, please remember Pat Egan whose eyesight is limiting her options.  Your prayers for these dear women will be of great assistance.  We also ask supportive prayers for Fr. Scott from Christ the Savior in Brewer who is recovering from a surgery that had unexpected complications.  He is recovering at home now.  God grant him needed strength and a quick, solid recovery!

COULD YOU HELP AN ORTHODOX STUDENT IN MAINE?  The son of an Orthodox family (known to us) will be a student at Eastern Maine Community College studying diesel mechanics this fall.  The family lives a little too far away for a daily commute and are hoping their son could find a suitable small apartment or room in someone's home while he's a student.  Would anyone be able to offer him a rental arrangment for the coming academic year?  Please contact Fr. Leo 207 385 3000 (text) or Presbytera (her phone is out of commission, so please use email:  [email protected]).  Either of them can put you in contact with the family.  Thank you!

WEEKLY FELLOWSHIP HOUR  THANK YOU to everyone who brings something to share at table during fellowship hour.  Fellowship hour is that much more pleasant with refreshments thanks to your thoughtful generosity each week!

PLEASE HELP ST. GEORGE RAISE A BIT OF EXTRA INCOME by turning in bottles and cans for redemption at Damon's Beverage and Redemption Center at 700 Hogan Road in Bangor.  Last year St. George received just shy of $400 for the year by this redemption method--every little bit helps.  Thank you!

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - Donations can be made online.

Floros & Lauros the Monk-martyrs of Illyria

These Martyrs were twin brothers, and stonemasons. After the martyrdom of their teachers Proclus and Maximus, they left Byzantium and came to the city of Ulpiana in Illyricum, where a certain Licinius hired them to build a temple for the idols. The wages he gave them, they distributed to the poor, and when the temple was built, Floros and Lauros gathered the paupers, and with their help put ropes about the necks of the idols, pulled them to the ground, and furnished the temple as a church. When Licinius learned of this, he had the paupers burned alive in a furnace. Floros and Lauros were tormented, then cast into a deep well, where they gave up their souls to the Lord. When their holy relics were recovered years later, they poured forth myrrh and worked many miracles; they were enshrined in Constantinople.

Epistle Reading

Seventh Tone.

Prokeimenon. Seventh Tone. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:10-17.

Brethren, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Matthew

8th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:14-22

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
