Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today

The Pharisees were an ancient and outstanding sect among the Jews known for their diligent observance of the outward matters of the Law. Although, according to the word of our Lord, they "did all their works to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5), and were hypocrites (ibid. 23: 13, 14, 15, etc.), because of the apparent holiness of their lives they were thought by all to be righteous, and separate from others, which is what the name Pharisee means. On the other hand, Publicans, collectors of the royal taxes, committed many injustices and extortions for filthy lucre's sake, and all held them to be sinners and unjust. It was therefore according to common opinion that the Lord Jesus in His parable signified a virtuous person by a Pharisee, and a sinner by a Publican, to teach His disciples the harm of pride and the profit of humble-mindedness.

Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Forty-day Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue. This present week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read today, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights.

SUPERBOWL SUPERSNACKS! Our Moms’ Group will be holding a “Super Snack” sale after church TODAY, Sunday, February 9^th! This is a one-stop shop for all your sweet and salty game-watching treats! Support this effort and buy something tasty to take home for the game.

GODPARENTS SUNDAY: Next Sunday, February 16^th is Godparents’ Sunday at Saints Constantine and Helen! Please plan to come to church and take communion with your Godchildren, or Godparents, and share this important day together. There will be a special children’s sermon and prayer during the service, and Sunday School teachers will have special activities and lessons.

ORATORICAL FESTIVAL: The St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival will be held on Saturday, March 8^th at our parish following the Saturday of Souls Divine Liturgy service. It is a national program where Orthodox youth, grades 7 – 12, present speeches discussing the Greek Orthodox faith and the Church. Youth can earn cash awards at the parish level and scholarship awards if they make it to the Nationals. SATURDAY OF THE SOULS: Saturday of the Souls is dedicated to those who left this world. We will have Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. at our Church, on Saturday, February 22nd, March 1^st, and March 8^th followed by Memorial Service. Please come so we can pray together for their souls and if you can, bring koliva (wheat), prosfora (bread), wine, oil and the names of the deceased.

PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY LECTURE SERIES: Each Wednesday during Lent, beginning on Wednesday, March 5^th, our parish will hold a Lecture and Lenten Pot Luck following the Presanctified Liturgy services. This year’s theme is “Holy Traditions, traditions, and “Yiayia-ology”.” Mark those evenings on your calendar and plan to join us.

ANNUAL KOULOUMA LUNCHEON: Save the Date! Our annual Koulouma luncheon will be held on Sunday, March 9^th following the Divine Liturgy service. This traditional Lenten meal is prepared and served by our St. Helen Philoptochos members, as we gather together as a parish to start the Great Lent.

FIRE RELIEF FUND: In response to the devastation caused by the recent and ongoing fires in Southern California, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, in collaboration with the Metropolis of San Francisco and the National Philoptochos Society, has launched a fundraising campaign to assist those affected by this tragedy. MEMORIAL SERVICES: Please call the church office to schedule all memorials and coffee hour sponsorships at least two weeks in advance. On the day of the service, please bring a list of family names you would like Father to remember in prayer. The requested Coffee Hour Sponsorship donation is $200. Koliva will be distributed to parishioners at the coffee hour; if you wish to bring in paximadia, koulourakia, or other dry cookie it may also be distributed.
