Welcome!

OUR MISSION is to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, sanctify the faithful through the liturgy and the Holy Sacraments, grow the church by receiving new members, live the Orthodox Christian Faith, and serve humanity through Christ-centered ministries.

OUR VISION is to be a loving, caring, and welcoming Christian community where all belong and grow in the Orthodox Christian Faith through worship, witness, fellowship, and service to others.

HOLY COMMUNION is offered to those baptized and confirmed in the Eastern Orthodox Christian Faith who have prepared according to the Orthodox Tradition. Guests and visitors are welcome to worship with us and receive the antidoron (“instead of the gifts”) blessed bread at the dismissal.
Please allow Catechism School children to receive Holy Communion first, followed by the newly baptized infants. When you approach the chalice, please give your baptismal name to the priest.

GUESTS AND VISITORS: Enter your contact information in the Guest Book at the narthex if you want us to contact you and join us for fellowship hour in our church hall following the liturgy.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 115.5,3 (116.15,12).
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has given me?

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:6-11.

Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

Grave Mode.
Στίχ. Τί ἀνταποδώσωμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ περὶ πάντων, ὧν ἀνταπέδωκεν ἡμῖν;

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 10:25-37

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

8th Sunday of Luke

Saints and Feasts

November 12

John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria

Saint John was born in 555 on the island of Cyprus in the city of Amathus; his father, Epiphanius, was a ruler of Cyprus. The Saint was consecrated Archbishop of Alexandria in 608. A man of exemplary uprightness, in his zeal for Orthodoxy he strove mightily to fight the many heresies among the Christians in Egypt; but above all, he was famous for his singular generosity, humility, and sympathy towards all, especially the poor. His mercy was so great that the report of it reached the Persian invaders of Jerusalem, who desired to see him because of it. Saint John reposed in 619, at the age of sixty-four.

Youth Ministries

HOPE & JOY Activities

Dear Parents of our Hope/Joy youth,

I would like to thank you for bringing your children to our "Living the Liturgy- Proskomide" event. We started the evening by walking through our Annunciation Orthodox Church, discussing candles, icons, and prayer. We then joined Father John on the solea, where the children were able to see up close the Vestments that Orthodox priests wear, the objects that are used to prepare the Holy Communion, how the prosphora bread is cut, and to whom each piece is dedicated. The children learned that every part of this service, including cutting the prosphora, has a deep meaning and symbolism.

Following our lesson, each child could press the prosphora seal onto their clay mold to take home. They learned that the antidoron ("instead of the gifts"), the blessed bread, should be carefully handled, and so the antidoron bags were made by each child. Lastly, they made an exact replica of our church’s Iconostasis.

I wanted to send a special thank you to Father John and Presvytera Evangelia, who helped me plan and bring this event to fruition.

May God continue to bless all our youth in their spiritual growth.

Yours in Christ,

Effie Patounas

Hope/Joy Advisor

Spiritual Life Ministry News

"For God is with us." (Isaiah 8:10)

The Season of Advent in the Orthodox Church runs from November 15 through December 24 and is a fasting period and reflective preparation for the Incarnation of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For forty days, we prepare to celebrate the Nativity of Christ. We fast. We pray. We worship.

Here are a few ideas to help us further focus our journey to Bethlehem this  Advent Season

1) Consider praying through the book of Psalms on your own or with your family. In past years, we have prayed the Psalms together, which we will again offer for Great Lent.

Here are some resources for praying the Psalter, available through the Resource Center or online:

2) New Tradition for December! The book of Luke in the Bible has 24 chapters and tells the story of Jesus’ life. Read one chapter per night and wake up Christmas morning, knowing why we celebrate the King of Kings!

3) Choose a book to read during Advent (available through the Resource Center or online)

“Let All Creation Rejoice: Reflections for Advent, the Nativity and Epiphany” by Fr. Stavros N. Akrotirianakis - written to be read daily from November 15 through January 7 (the Feast of St. John the Baptist, which falls one day after the Feast of Epiphany).

“Meditations for Advent: Preparing for Christ’s Birth” by Vassilios Papavassiliou

“Celebrating the Twelve Days of Christmas: A Family Devotional in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition” by AmandaEve Wigglesworth- With hymns, stories, meditations, and activities for each day as well as suggestions for the whole season, this book provides an invaluable resource for families looking to restore the season of Christmas to its rightful place in their lives.

“Behold a Great Light: A Daily Devotional for the Nativity Fast through Theophany” The forty days of fasting before Christmas are meant to prepare us for the Feast of the Nativity, but the busy-ness of the secular celebration can interfere with our best efforts to center our hearts on Christ. Behold a Great Light is a daily devotional designed to help readers contemplate the mysteries of the Incarnation during the fast and the Christmas—Theophany season, ending with the Synaxis of St. John the Baptist on January 7. Popular Ancient Faith authors, bloggers, and podcasters bring their unique perspectives to these meditations, paired with selections from the Scriptures and the hymns of the Church.

“The Winter Pascha: Readings for the Christmas–Epiphany Season” by Fr. Thomas Hopko - Forty meditations for the season of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, ending with the feast of the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple on the fortieth day after Christ's birth.

4) Save the date and join us on December 16th for our Annual Nativity Fast Retreat. Details will be shared shortly.

As we pass this holy time of preparation, let us pray for one another and the many suffering throughout the world.

May it be blessed!
