Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 3:9-17.

Brethren, we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are.

Plagal Fourth Mode.

Gospel Reading

9th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 14:22-34

At that time, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."

And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they entered the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.

9th Sunday of Matthew

Homeless Ministry News

As we look forward to the new Ecclesiastical Year and students and teachers are preparing to start the new school year, we’d like to say, “Thank You!” to all who supported our 7th Annual Annunciation Church Backpack Drive! We delivered 50 backpacks filled with supplies to “Family Promise” for students from families experiencing homelessness! We also donated 24 backpacks to Philoptochos for their philanthropic work. Please take a couple of minutes to read the following note of thanks from Family Promise of Philadelphia’s Executive Director, Robert Byrne:

“Family Promise of Philadelphia (formerly known as Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network) thanks Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for supporting FPP's 2024 Back to School event. Parishioners donated backpacks and school supplies to some of the most impoverished families in Philadelphia. In 2023, FPP prevented 108 families from becoming homeless and provided shelter to an additional 15 families. Many of those families include children who received backpacks and school supplies through the generosity of Annunciation and other interfaith network congregations. Thank you for giving these children the opportunity to thrive.”

Our 5th Annual Project Home Book Drive will begin on September 1st and continue through September 30th.

Matthew 25 Ministry News

“Anyone who tries to make brownies without butter should be arrested.” Ina Garten

How many of us think nothing about baking a little something sweet to indulge our families with? It’s pretty simple for most of us as we reach into our pantries and refrigerators and pull out the necessary ingredients to bake a cake or make cookies. Worse case scenario, we run to the market and think nothing about buying dessert or any ingredients we don’t have on hand for our recipe. We received a monthly blast from Seeds of Hope summarizing their summer and a few other notable things. It really got our hearts pumping and gearing up for the fall as M25 prepared for the new ecclesiastical year. Kay Negley, the pantry’s director, mentioned that numbers didn’t wane over the summer. There is generally a significant drop in shoppers during the warmer months. Sadly, this was not the case due to inflation at the pump, cost to cool our homes, and naturally the rise in the cost of groceries. People with food insecurities just can't seem to catch a break! They sent a photo from the pantry showing a meager baking shelf. We thought to ourselves, why a baking shelf? Easy, everyone wants a treat.

People with food insecurities have birthdays, milestones, and a sweet tooth just like the rest of us. We don’t often think of supplying a pantry with the simple pleasures of baking mixes, flour, sugar , oil, and even chocolate chips. We didn’t come up with this list of requested foods, and we weren’t even planning on asking for these items.. It just felt right to ask our community to help us out and bring small packages of each to church until the middle of September. We would love to make an abundant delivery in the next 6 weeks. How nice for kids and loved ones to come home to fresh baked cookies, cake, bread, or even a healthy muffin? Please consider donating a small bag of sugar or vegetable oil or flour. We would be so grateful. Please drop off any food items in the bin in the cove by the Sunday School classrooms. We will purchase all the perishable foods like we always do. If you prefer a Vanco donation, we encourage this as well, and M25 will pick up some of the requested items for you. We often shop at Walmart for flour, sugar, and oil. Walmart has some of the lowest prices and offers small sizes. If you prefer something healthy, pick up some peanut butter and oatmeal. We will be happy to take anything you deliver that isn’t expired.

Thank you for supporting Matthew 25 and we hope that you continue to enjoy your summer! Enjoy the day and all its beauty.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: “Choose to be in touch with what is wonderful, refreshing, and healing within yourself and around you. “
