Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Seventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:1-10

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that He must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Seventh Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 1st Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

1st Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Sunday after Epiphany

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Mode

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Theophany Afterfeast in the 1st Mode

When Thou wast baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was made manifest; for the voice of the Father bare witness to Thee, calling Thee His beloved Son. And the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the certainty of the word. O Christ our God, Who hast appeared and hast enlightened the world, glory be to Thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Mode

You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light."

Stewardship and Donations

BENEFITS AND REASONS OF BECOMING A STEWARD

Some people think they should become a steward of the Church, so they may vote in Parish Assembly Meetings. Others think they should become a steward, so they are eligible for discounted rental rates for the Community Center and Small Hall.  Still others think they should become a steward because our Saint Nicholas Church’ s budget needs their money. While it is true that by becoming a steward of the Church, we are eligible to vote, enjoy certain benefits, and obviously our stewardship ministry funds part of the Church budget, these truly are not the reasons WHY we should become stewards. These are perks of being a steward, but not the reasons to become a steward.

Do you love God? Then become a steward of His Church. We become stewards of the Church because we love God, and we love His Church. We want to be part of His mission here on earth and help perpetuate the Church for future generations.

Has God blessed you? Then become a steward of His Church. We become stewards because God has blessed us, and we want to thank Him by giving back.

Since the beginning of time, the way to thank God is to give Him your gifts of time, talent and treasure. The Old Testament is filled with wonderful and inspirational examples for you to consider as ways to thank God.

God bless you for your love and support of our Church and our great community of Saint Nicholas.

DOES YOUR EMPLOYER OFFER MATCHING DONATIONS?

Your employer could be offering Matching Gifts Programs as an easy and structured way for them to support good work in the community. Please ASK your employer if they offer some type of philanthropic program in which a company may financially match donations that their employees make to nonprofit organizations. When an employee makes a donation, they will request the matching gift from their employer to the specific nonprofit organization. In order to assist our Saint Nicholas Community, we are kindly asking that you learn more about Company Matching Donations at work by inquiring with your Company's Human Resources Department if it offers a similar program. Please note that Saint Nicholas Church would be identified in a Company Matching Program as "Greek Orthodox Community of Santa Clara County".

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is a 501©3 Corporation and our tax ID is 94-1578745.

YOUTH BASKETBALL SPRING SEASON - PRACTICES HAVE BEGUN, REGISTER ASAP TO PARTICIPATE

Practices for the Youth Basketball spring season have started.  If you are interested and not already registered for the 2024-2025 season, it is imperative that you register soon so we can organize the teams and register our rosters with the league.  We need to have the minimum number of players registered by the end of January to register a team.  Registrants after January are welcome, but only if we’ve determined there are enough for that age group by end of January.  Teams are Girls 3rd-5th grades (Elementary) and 6th-9th grades (Middle School+) and Boys 3rd-5th grades (Elementary), 6th-8th grades (MS), and 9th-12thgrades (HS).  Weekly practice days are:

Boys Elementary: Mondays 6-7:15 (note: there will be practice on MLK Jr Day 1/20 for those who can make it)

Boys Middle School: Tuesdays 6:45-8:15

Girls elementary and Middle School+ Wednesdays 6-7:30

Boys HS will begin practice in February, but be sure to register NOW so we can roster a team.

The OYAA is a recreational league of Bay Area Orthodox Churches.  Games are typically Sunday afternoons running from the beginning of March to mid-May.  We welcome all skill levels, but for the Spring Season we encourage consistent practice participation.  There is a nominal fee to participate and the liability/waiver form common with all ministries is required.

Register your player here ASAP so we can organize teams, coaches, and provide updated communication, https://www.saintnicholas.org/basketball.  If you have any questions, please contact the Program Director John Cocoles at [email protected] or [email protected].
