4th Sunday of Matthew

Priest Message

06/28/2026

Sermon on The Fourth Sunday of Saint Matthew, 2026

In The Name Of The Father and Of The Son and Of The Holy Spirit, Amen!

My Dear Family in The Lord,

In His earthly activity of three years, Our Lord Jesus Christ, encountered, met different people from many categories of the society. Poor people, as well as rich people, educated and uneducated people, and many others.

Usually most of them came to Him, for their personal needs, some suffered from different diseases and infirmities, others were born blind or with other disabilities, some had people in their own families who were suffering. The main reason for all the people mentioned above, to
come and meet Jesus, was that they were in need for something and came to asked Him to do whatever their wish was.

People contacted The Lord, when them or their loved ones were ill and there was no hope for cure elsewhere, when they spent fortunes with many physicians and found no cure, they came to The Real Physician, The Only True Physician of our souls and bodies, Our Lord and God and
Savior Jesus Christ!

In today’s Gospel Lesson, however, we learn about a very unusual situation, and unique situation if you wish.

And that is, because a centurion came to Jesus and asked Him to heal his servant, who was lying paralyzed.

Now, before we move any further, let me explain to you, why I mentioned above, that this is a very unusual, or unique situation.

In Jesus’ contemporary society, 80% of the people were slaves. Being a slave, you had technically spoken no rights, or very little rights, close to none.

Slaves had no access to education, they were constantly at their masters’ orders, obedience, they could not make themselves “visible” in the society or speak out their voice.

Now, picture this, in that environment, an army commander, a Roman army officer, came to Our Lord to ask Him to heal his servant.

The commander was a centurion, that means that he was in charge of 100 soldiers, which means, that he, the centurion, was, somehow, part of the upper class of that society.

So, coming back to the centurion’s request to Jesus, that was probably something unheard and unexpected. A master, a slave owner, who was also a fairly rich person to ask that his slave to be healed? Usually the slave masters, did not their servants like that, they only used them fo work and if they were disabled or in incapacity to work, they just dumped them, because nobody wanted to take care of a person like that!

For this centurion to ask The Lord, to heal his servant, was something unthinkable. Nobody would imagine that.

This gesture, made Jesus to see, what a wonderful person the centurion was. A very good quality person and a high character. A man, who “did not lose his humanity”, because of his rank or position in that society, a man who showed compassion to a fellow human being, who was suffering, despite the fact that, that person was his own servant, a slave who technically speaking, was not even to be considered by many of his conationals. They did not even regard slaves as human beings, but only “instruments /utensils” if you wish, that are only to be use for work and nothing else!

That is why, this episode from Jesus’ Life was so unique and unusual.

And of course The Lord healed the centurion’s servant, because He was so impressed by this man. Jesus appreciated his humbleness, his humility, when the centurion told Him: “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be
healed.” (Matthew 8:8)

Our Lord was also impressed of his (the centurion’s faith):” Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” (Matthew 8:10)

We know that shortly after this, the centurion became a follower of Christ and one of His many disciples and he died as a martyr. His day of celebration in The Orthodox Church is September 13.

May Our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, through the prayers of His Mother and of all the saints, heal all our diseases of our souls and bodies and have mercy on us, for He Is The True Healer and Physician of our souls and body and Is always glorified with The Father and The Holy
Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages, AMEN!!!!!!!

I can’t wait to see you in Church!

In Jesus Christ Our Lord, I remain, prayerfully yours,

+ Fr. Catalin

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12

On the first day of the week at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking spices, which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered His words and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the Apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.

Fourth Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Tone. Psalm 46.6,1.
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 6:18-23.

Brethren, having been set free from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification.

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But then what return did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Third Tone.

Gospel Reading

4th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 8:5-13

At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Finding of the Relics of Cyrus and John the Unmercenaries

These Saints lived during the years of Diocletian. Saint Cyrus was from Alexandria, and Saint John was from Edessa of Mesopotamia. Because of the persecution of that time, Cyrus fled to the Gulf of Arabia, where there was a small community of monks. John, who was a soldier, heard of Cyrus' fame and came to join him. Henceforth, they passed their life working every virtue, and healing every illness and disease freely by the grace of Christ; hence their title of "Unmercenaries." They heard that a certain woman, named Athanasia, had been apprehended together with her three daughters, Theodora, Theoctiste, and Eudoxia, and taken to the tribunal for their confession of the Faith. Fearing lest the tender young maidens be terrified by the torments and renounce Christ, they went to strengthen them in their contest in martyrdom; therefore they too were seized. After Cyrus and John and those sacred women had been greatly tormented, all were beheaded in the year 292. Their tomb became a renowned shrine in Egypt, and a place of universal pilgrimage. It was found in the area of the modern day resort near Alexandria named Abu Kyr.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Tone

Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
