Priest Message

06/21/2026

Sermon on the Third Sunday of Saint Matthew, 2026

In The Name Of The Father and Of The Son and Of The Holy Spirit, AMEN!

My Dear Family in The Lord,

From the medical viewpoint we know, that the eyes in our body, transmit visual information to the brain. This is very important, because, vision is one of the five senses given to us by God and by seeing the things around us, we can process better the information.

When I was a student, I had and I still have a very good, what is called, a “photographic memory”, meaning that when I read the courses, the books and all the materials, that I had to study, to prepare for my exams, I could remember different subjects and topics, even knowing,
what page they were at.

It was my way of studying and learning, other people have other talents and methods to study and learn.

But in essence we all use our vision as an important element to communicate and to understand better that we have to do and how to live our lives!

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Our Lord is telling us, that: “The eye is the lamp of the body.”(Matthew 6:22) and He continues by saying: “So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” (Matthew 6:23)

This text self explains itself, what the expression of our face tells the people about us. If we have a shiny faces, and people see that, they will immediately know, that our hearts, souls and minds are full of light, full of The Love Of Christ and they will appreciate that, they will immediately understand that, here is a man of God! A man of God who lives a Christian life and who is ready to share through his/her words and personal example, their faith in The Lord with others. A person like that who is always ready to do the work of God, to help others and to serve them as much as they can in every aspect of their lives.

But if our eye is not sound, then our whole entire inside is seen as a place of darkness, a place that does not radiate The Light of Christ and does not show any signs that he or she, follow Our Lord Jesus Christ!

After that The Lord continues by saying: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24) These words suggest that we cannot live a “dual life”, we cannot pretend that we serve The Lord, but instead that is only an appearance that we show from the outside, but in our inside we are serving both, God and mammon, because we are so “emersed” so to speak into the cares and pleasures of this life. We cannot live “a double
life” like that! We need to serve only One Master and That Master should always be Our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ!

Then, The Lord continues His speech by offering us examples not to be worry and not to get tight up in different cares of this world, such as, what we shall eat or what we shall drink, or how we shall clothe, because He Is aware of all these things and will provide us with everything that we need!

The Lord also offers us the examples of the birds of the air, saying that Our Heavenly Father feeds them, as well as the lilies of the field, how they grow, “they neither toil, nor they spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” (Matthew 6:28-29)

“O men of little faith? Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well." (Matthew 6:31-33)

My Dear Sisters and Brothers in The Lord,

We have around us, all the time, so many temptations going on, temptations that emphasize everything that our Gospel lesson today tell us, being concerned about our food, our clothing and many other temporary cares and pleasures. Many times, all these create such “a
competition” that can be very dangerous, that makes us to look for and to make us proud of our own selves and give us a sense of “superiority” over our brothers and sisters, thinking that if we can afford all kinds of fashion brands or eat quality foods, we are “much better” human beings than others!

Each time when we feel, or when we are tempted to think that way, we shall remember the last words of today’s Gospel: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well." (Matthew 6:33) Amen!

I can’t wait to see you in Church!

May God bless y’all and your families!

In Jesus Christ Our Lord, I remain, prayerfully yours,

+ Fr. Catalin

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Third Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. After this He appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table and He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Third Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Second Tone. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 5:1-10.

Brethren, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man -- though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

Second Tone.

Gospel Reading

3rd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 6:22-33

The Lord said, "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well."

3rd Sunday of Matthew

Julian the Martyr of Tarsus

This Martyr, who was born to a pagan father and a Christian mother, was from Cilicia, confessed the Christian Faith before the Proconsul Marcian, and was perfected in martyrdom at the age of eighteen, when he was put into a sack with sand and venomous serpents and cast into the sea. Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Tone

When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, all the powers in the Heavens cried out: O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Unless the grace of God comes to the help of our frailty, to protect and defend it, no man can withstand the insidious onslaughts of the enemy nor can he damp down or hold in check the fevers which burn in our flesh with nature's fire.
St. John Cassian
Conferences, Conference Two: On Discernment, Paulist Press pg. 74, 5th century

We advance toward humility by means of trials. He who rests on his virtue without suffering tribulation has the door of pride open before him.
