Past Bulletins

A Word from Father Alex

Beloved Parishioners and Friends:

I was sorry to miss out on worship and friendship with you last Sunday. I ended up with pneumonia and was definitely down for the count. Many thanks to Fr. Manny for leading us in worship last Friday and Sunday, as well as this week during the March 15 Presanctified Liturgy. His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios will visit with us on another Sunday. I'll look forwrad to rejoining our worship cycle this Friday, March 17 with the 3rd Salutations.

This Sunday, March 19, is the Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross. On the Third Sunday of Lent each year, the Church presents us with the Cross of our Lord to strengthen and encourage us at this midpoint of Lent. This moment also prepares us to venerate the Holy Cross during Holy Week, as we engage the Passion of the Christ. During Divine Liturgy this Sunday, we will kneel before the beautifully decorated Cross and raise high the sacrifice of our Lord. Flowers from the Cross will be given to our faithful, including our Sunday School children. Also, we will be blessing the beautiful new Saint Patrick icon. What a special day this will be at our parish home.

As mentioned within the Weekly eMail, the Sunday Bulletin and this eBulletin, we have many decorating needs throughout Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
Please consider our donation form and do what you can--I greatly appreciate your interest and generosity as we engage this holy season of the Church.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Seventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:1-10

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that He must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Epistle Reading

Sunday of the Holy Cross
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Chrysanthos
March 19

The Holy Martyrs Chrysanthus and Daria

Saint Chrysanthus, who was from Alexandria, had been instructed in the Faith of Christ by a certain bishop. His father, who was a senator by rank and a pagan, had him shut up in prison for many days; then, seeing the unchanging disposition of his mind, he commanded that a certain young woman named Daria be brought from Athens. She was a very beautiful and learned maiden, and also an idolater, and Chrysanthus' father wedded him to her so that he might be drawn away from the Faith of Christ because of his love for her. Instead of this however, Chrysanthus drew Daria unto piety, and both of them boldly proclaimed Christ and received the crown of martyrdom in 283, during the reign of Numerian, when they were buried alive in a pit of mire.

Sunday of the Holy Cross

With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.

Wisdom of the Fathers

The key to knowledge is the humility of Christ. The door of the Kingdom of Heaven is open, not to those who only know in their learned minds the mysteries of faith and the commandments of their Creator, but to those who have progressed far enough to live by them.
St. Bede the Venerable
Unknown, 8th century

To deny oneself means to give up one's bad habits; to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad thoughts and desires; to suppress every evil thought; to avoid occasions of sin; not to desire or to do anything out of self-love, but to do everything out of love for God. To deny oneself, according to St. Paul means "to be dead to sin. . . but alive to God."
St. Innocent of Alaska

BLESSING OF THE SAINT PATRICK ICON, MARCH 19
This summer, John and Robin Karagounis commissioned a hand-painted icon of Saint Patrick—and donated it to our parish. We are incredibly grateful to the Karagounis family for their thoughtfulness and generosity. During Divine Liturgy on the 19th, we will bless the icon and present it to our parishioners, especially our youth. We have already found a prominent place in the Narthex for the icon, and we know it will be an integral aspect of our worship life and educational efforts for years to come.

ORTHODOX LIFE: "LIVING THE GREAT COMMISSION," CONT. MARCH 19 & 26
Following Divine Liturgy, join Lee in the Middle School Classroom for the continuation of this timely series, focusing on the Great Commission of our Lord. This exhortation from the Gospel of Matthew is read at each baptism, not only to confirm the importance of the respective baptism but also to encourage those present in spreading the Gospel of Christ. Explore these ideas, and more, with Lee on the 19th and 26th.

PHILOPTOCHOS DIGNITY MATTERS COLLECTION, MARCH 19

Through March, Philoptochos is collecting items for Dignity Matters, a non-profit organization that supplies feminine hygiene products, bras and underwear to women and girls who are homeless or disadvantaged. A bin is available in the Narthex and an Amazon wish list will be shared. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

FOURTH WEEK OF LENT SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS, MARCH 22 & BEYOND
There are a host of Lenten services this week and coming weekend. Please join us as often as you can, even if you cannot stay the whole time.
Fourth Week of Lent:
March 22, 6 pm, PreSanctified Liturgy. These weekly Lenten services offer an opportunity to receive Holy Communion, strengthening us through the forty days. March 26, 4th Sunday of Lent—Sunday of Saint John of the Ladder. The fourth Sunday of Great Lent is dedicated to the memory of Saint John of the Ladder, a 6th - 7th century monastic from Mt. Sinai who authored “The Ladder of Divine Ascent.”

LENTEN, HOLY WEEK & PASCHA FLOWER DONATIONS
Great Lent is here, and there are a host of flower and related decorating needs from now all the way through Pascha/Easter Sunday. A donation opportunity list is in the Narthex and also available here. Please drop off your donation form at the Church Office or see Fr. Alex or Maria Sweten. Immediate needs include the adorning of the “Sweet Kissing” icon for Friday night Salutations and the tray for the Sunday of the Holy Cross.

NEW FELLOWSHIP HOUR SIGN-UP RESOURCES
All parishioners are invited to host Fellowship Hour on a coming Sunday this winter and spring. In addition to the sign-up poster in the hall, we can now easily learn more and sign up online. Fellowship Hour is a beloved, significant tradition at our parish that speaks to Christian fellowship and hospitality. Thanks in advance for your support, and contact Fellowship Hour Chair Brian Kaufman with any questions: bvkaufman@gmail.com

STEWARDSHIP 2023 & TESTIMONIAL VIDEO
As we move into the new year, we now kindly ask our Stewards to read over our 2023 materials package and prayerfully complete and return 2023 Commitment Cards at their earliest convenience. This not only helps us plan for and support our parish ministries but is a visible symbol of our Eucharistic community: united in worship and dedication to the Gospel. The Stewardship pages of our parish website have been updated with our 2023 materials, and please contact Phil LaFond with any questions (phil@lafonds.net). View the Stewardship Sunday testimonial video here.

NEW ASSISTIVE LISTENING SYSTEM
Parishioners who would like to try out our new Assistive Listening System are welcome to use the receivers on our Narthex Welcome Table. The receivers are easy to use: just place the ear device on your ear, and turn on the “on/volume” on top of the receiver.

USHERING AND "RIDES TO CHURCH" MINISTRIES
This winter and spring, those interested in our Ushering Ministry are invited to contact George Dimitriou: 781-769-2085; Gdimitriou@yahoo.com. Offering yourself as an usher is a wonderful way to meet new people and helps create a welcoming environment at Saint Gregory. We have also been re-initiating our efforts to provide rides to church for anyone who needs one. Once again, contact George Dimitriou if you could use a “lift” or would like to help drive.

LITURGICAL SINGING
This ministry engages musical leadership not only for Sunday liturgy but all the liturgical needs of the year, from Vespers services to Great Lent and Holy Week. Your time and talent is most welcome within our Liturgical Singing Ministry. Please contact Kathy Kalogeras to learn more: kalogeras1@earthlink.net.

Please contact Eleni LaFond to pick a date for Antidoro service and Fr. Alex to plan a date for an Epistle reading.
