You Simply Cannot Follow Christ Following Yourself

We all struggle with it. We all are tempted by it. We all want to make it happy. What is it? IT is our ego. Ever since Eve turned her eyes away from God and “saw the tree was good for food, was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree beautiful to contemplate,” (Genesis 3.6) we human beings have been in a war between following God and following our ego. And we all know who was winning the war....until Christ came 2000 years ago.

When God became a human being, just like one of us “yet without sin” (Hebrews 4.15) He introduced a way we could finally win the war. He gave us the Cross. Jesus said, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8.34) But before we are able to take up our cross and follow, we must FIRST deny ourselves. The mistake Eve made in the Garden, long before she ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, was that she turned her eyes away from God and followed her herself.

The mission of Christ is to restore what was lost in the Garden, and to complete His original plan for us to be in communion with Him. His part is finished. He defeated death by dying on the Cross, being buried and then resurrected. He joined us to His divinity when He ascended to His Throne in Heaven. The rest is up to us to follow Him into Heaven. But before we can follow Him we have to stop following ourselves.

It isn’t easy learning how to deny ourselves, so that we can follow Christ into Heaven. Our ‘default position’ will always be to look out for ourselves and do what is in our best interest. The funny thing is that following Christ into heaven IS in our best interest. We just don’t recognize it because we live ‘here’ and He is ‘there’ where we can’t see Him. The Cross is the way.

The entire Orthodox Christian life is focused on today’s invitation from Christ. We learn to deny ourselves by a life of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We learn to live with Christ through the Holy Sacraments of the Church. Here’s the key to making it work in our lives. 

We cannot make up our own rules. We cannot make up our own beliefs. We cannot even make up our own fasting and prayers. Every time we make up our own way of doing things, we are following ourselves instead of denying ourselves. The only way to deny ourselves is to allow the Church, which is guided by the Holy Spirit, to lead us.

Fr. Theofanis

In this Sunday’s Epistle, St. Paul tells us something very important: “A person is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (Gal. 2:16).

That means we are not saved just by rules or by trying to be “good enough.” No amount of fasting, prayer, or good deeds can earn us heaven on their own. Salvation is a gift. It comes only through Christ.

But this doesn’t mean our efforts are useless. Fasting, prayer, and acts of love are very important. They are not tickets to heaven, but they are ways we open the door of our hearts so that Christ can live in us. That is why St. Paul says: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal. 2:20).

Now let’s bring this into our daily life. Many times we spend hours chasing things that don’t matter. Try to pause life for a moment. Go back in your mind to the years before the internet, before social media. Life was slower. Families ate meals together. We talked face-to-face. People knew us for who we were, not for how many likes or followers we had.

But today, many of us waste hours on empty things. At the end of the day, we must ask ourselves: ten years from now, how will we look back on our time? Will we be thankful that Christ guided us toward our true life goals, or will we regret the wasted hours and moments that could have placed us in a better place?

This is the choice St. Paul places before us: to live by ourselves, or to let Christ live in us. And when Christ lives in us, then our life has meaning, our struggles have purpose, and our future has hope.

A Hymn for Every Feast: The Katavasias of the Year

This Sunday is the Apodosis (or Leave-Taking) of the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross and, as such, it is the last time we will chant the Katavasias of the Cross this year. The next feast day that approaches is that of the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple on November 21st. To conclude our analysis of the Katavasias of the Cross, we will analyze Ode Eight, in which we hear once again of the Three Holy Youths, and Ode Nine, in which we magnify the Theotokos as “mystical Paradise.”

The eighth ode of any set of katavasias is always preceded by the verse, “We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.” In Ode Eight of the Katavasias of the Cross, we conclude our reflection on the Three Holy Youths by chanting,

“You three pious Servants, * same in number as the Trinity, bless God the Father, Maker of all; sing a hymn to the Word who condescended and who changed the fire in the furnace into dew; as for the all-holy Spirit, who gives life to all, exalt Him beyond measure unto the ages.”

In this hymn, we can clearly see that the Fathers of the Church view the trial of the Three Holy Youths as a theophany, a revelation of God. The Servants are said to be “same in number as the Trinity,” and the Word of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, is said to be the one “who changed the fire in the furnace into dew.” Thus, Ode Eight reveals that the saving presence of the Holy Trinity was mystically foreshadowed in the furnace, turning suffering into life and prefiguring Christ’s victory over death. This ode is immediately followed by the reading of the Gospel and Psalm 50, after which Ode Nine, which concerns the Theotokos, is chanted as part of the Megalynarion. 

“Theotokos, you are mystical Paradise, for without husbandry you have blossomed Christ…”   

There is a lot happening in this first verse of the Ninth Ode Katavasia of the Cross. Why is the Theotokos called “mystical Paradise?” We can see that the verse is explicitly Christological; that is, it concerns what we say about the Lord Jesus Christ in His Incarnation. As Orthodox Christians, we understand that Christ is the eternal Son of God, and since the word “paradise” harkens to the Book of Genesis and the Garden of Eden, we understand that the God who walked in that Paradise with Adam and Eve is the same One who dwelt in the womb of the Ever-Virgin Mary. We can then say that wherever God makes His dwelling is Paradise. 

By the way, the word ‘husbandry’ here is a deliberate double entendre, not in a comedic or crude way, but in a poetic and theological way that captures both the agrarian and marital senses of the term ‘husband.’ This imagery shows us that the Theotokos is, mystically, the Paradise cultivated without human hands. 

“... by whom on earth the Cross, as a life-bearing tree, has been planted and watered. As it is now exalted, we adore Him and worship Him and magnify you.”

Through Mary comes Christ, who died on the Cross and rose again, giving life to the world. We magnify her as the Theotokos on account of her willing consent to become the dwelling place of God. Next week we will discuss more about Mary, the Feast of whose Entry into the Temple approaches in the coming months.

Saint Quadratus was a disciple of the Apostles, and became Bishop of Athens. According to the Synaxaristes, he contested for the Faith in the year 117, in the reign of Hadrian (117-138), but according to others, in the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180).

To deny oneself, according to St. Paul means "to be dead to sin. . . but alive to God."

Full Membership: 

Women of the Greek Orthodox Faith, of at least 18 years of age, shall be eligible for full membership in the Society.

Associate Membership:

An Associate Member shall enjoy all privileges of membership, except the right to vote or hold office.

  1. A non-Greek Orthodox woman married to a Greek Orthodox man.

Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral that provides hot meals, helping hands and meaningful relationships to the impoverished in our community. The heart for this ministry is illustrated in the book of Matthew 25:35-36:

 “….For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me….”

St. Nicholas Kitchen will continue preparing the Monday meals from 7:30 – 11:00 am. The meals will be delivered Monday's to the new Hope Center at the Sheppard center where the meals will be given to those in need by their, and our volunteers. We still need volunteers, food and monetary donations. Meals will be served from 11:00 – 12:00 pm. For further information, please call Chris Palaidis at (727) 808-3895.
