Nobody Wants Fool’s Gold

We have all had moments when we are utterly shocked at the words that come out of a person’s mouth, especially when the words are negative. “Can you believe she only worked one hour for Epiphany? Doesn’t she know that isn’t enough?” This might sound familiar, but have you ever heard, “Isn’t it great? Even though she has so many things to do, she still found time to come help us for an hour!”

What’s the difference? In both cases she worked for an hour to help with Epiphany, but in the first example, someone was complaining about how little she worked, obviously suggesting she could have and should have worked more. But we don’t always know someone’s situation. We don’t always know what struggles they have in their life. And we NEVER know the whole story. If we think about it for a moment we will understand that just as nobody knows our exact situation we can’t possibly know somebody else’s situation. So why do we insist on speaking poorly about others?

Jesus said, “Just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.” (Luke 6.31) The Golden Rule has passed down from generation to generation and still we need a reminder. If we don’t want people judging our actions because they don’t know the whole story, why do we still do the same to them? It seems that we spend more time reversing the Golden Rule to mean, “Since they did it to me, I’m going to do it to them!” This sounds more like fool's gold and we all know just how worthless that is.

This week take a moment and think twice before you react to someone or say something about someone. Remind yourself you don’t know the whole story and maybe your fool’s gold will turn into pure gold for the glory of God.

In today’s Epistle from 2 Corinthians 1:21–24; 2:1–4, we see St. Paul showing what it means to care for others with love and humility. He’s not just a teacher but like a father who feels the weight of looking after his family in faith. His message reminds us that being a leader in the Church is about serving others, not being in charge or controlling.

Paul begins by reminding the Corinthians that it's God who gives them strength and purpose through Jesus. It’s not our own power that keeps us strong in faith; it’s God working in us. Just like priests and deacons are chosen and blessed to serve, all of us as faithful are called by God to live holy lives and help others. This means we should see our lives as part of God’s bigger plan, and we should try to live in a way that shows that.

In the second part of the reading, Paul talks about why he didn’t visit the Corinthians earlier. He didn’t want to come when things were tense and cause more sadness. Instead, he wrote them a letter to help them understand his concerns, but he did it with tears and a heavy heart. Sometimes, correcting someone or having a tough conversation is better done from a distance, like writing a thoughtful message instead of saying something that could hurt them face-to-face.

We all have times when we need to correct or guide someone, whether it’s helping a child, offering advice to a friend, or talking to someone we care about. Paul teaches us to do it with kindness and patience. Think about how we handle situations with our kids, when we correct them, we want to help them grow, not make them feel bad or ashamed. The same should be true in our relationships with others.

Especially now, when we hear about our friends' or neighbors' homes being flooded and without electricity because of this hurricane, let's not just offer words of support, let's show our care through action.

Let’s follow Paul’s example by serving and guiding people with love. When we need to correct someone, let’s do it gently, with the goal of helping them. Just as God is patient with us, we should be patient and kind toward others. Amen

A Living Reality: The Liturgy Through the Years

In this week’s installment, we will explore some periodic variations in the way we chant the Third Antiphon, and briefly discuss the ways in which the Divine Liturgy has been handed down to us. It is important to understand that the Divine Liturgy, and indeed, all of the services of the Church, are an expression of our living faith. The Liturgy was not delivered to the world in like fashion as the tablets of the Law were delivered unto Moses atop Mount Sinai! Rather, it is the result of the cumulative contributions of each generation of Christians throughout the centuries. We briefly mentioned an example of this last week, when noting how Saint Justinian declared that, “Only-Begotten Son,” ought to be chanted in every Divine Liturgy. This is just one example of liturgical development. In a future installment, we’ll discuss how, “Axion Estin - It Is Truly Right,” was added to the Divine Liturgy as well.

Over time, various liturgical patterns would be adopted as the worship of the Church took shape. We understand that the Holy Fathers, in their wisdom and by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, appointed certain periods of time to be for fasting, as well as holy days or feast days to celebrate events in the life of Christ and the Saints, and these observations recur in a cycle each and every year. Our liturgical hymns reflect this cycle of feast days! The verses of the antiphons will always relate to the feast being celebrated, and the refrains will change to reflect the celebration too! One example of this is how, on Sundays at the second antiphon, we chant, “Save us, oh Son of God, who is risen from the dead…” Whereas on weekdays, we chant, “... who is wondrous in the saints….” Likewise, every major feast of the Lord gets its own verses and refrains.

The Third Antiphon, which is the main subject of today’s installment, has a different refrain every Sunday (unlike the first and second antiphons, which are always the same on a regular Sunday). This is the point in the Divine Liturgy at which we first chant the Resurrectional Apolytikion for the Tone of that week. You see, there is a cycle of eight musical scales, called “modes” or “tones,” which proceeds from week to week in numerical order. This Sunday, we are in the fifth mode, which is called “Plagal of the First.” The Resurrectional Apolytikion is the special hymn of the day which matches the mode of the week. This week, it is, “Let us worship the word who is unoriginate.” The verse which is chanted prior to the apolytikion is always the same on a regular Sunday: “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us greatly rejoice and be glad therein!” By this verse accompanying the Resurrectional Apolytikion, we understand that we are called to rejoice, not only in the temporal day in which we currently live, but moreso, in that Eternal Day which has no evening - eternal life with Christ in the Kingdom of Heaven. 

The Divine Liturgy is the way that we, as Orthodox Christians, unite ourselves to God in worship as His Church. As such, it is a foretaste of Heaven, a glimpse into the eternal life that awaits those who are in Christ Jesus.

Cyriacus the Hermit of Palestine

This Saint was born in Corinth in 448. He went to Palestine to the Lavra of Euthymius the Great, but because of his youth was sent by Saint Euthymius to Saint Gerasimus; after the death of Saint Gerasimus he returned to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. Later he took on a more rigorous life of asceticism in the wilderness of Natoufa, where there was nothing to eat except the exceedingly bitter wild herb called squills, which, however, through his prayers, God made sweet for him and his disciple. He lived 107 years and reposed in the year 555.

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 1st Mode

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. After this He appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table and He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Wisdom of the Fathers

There are three things that impel us towards what is holy: natural instincts, angelic powers and probity of intention. Natural instincts impel us when, for example, we do to others what we would wish them to do to us (cf. Luke 6:31), or when we see someone suffering deprivation or in need and naturally feel compassion. Angelic powers impel us when, being ourselves impelled to something worthwhile, we find we are providentially helped and guided. We are impelled by probity of intention when, discriminating between good and evil, we choose the good.

Women of the Greek Orthodox Faith, of at least 18 years of age, shall be eligible for full membership in the Society.

Associate Membership:

An Associate Member shall enjoy all privileges of membership, except the right to vote or hold office.

The following persons shall be eligible for associate membership:

  1. A non-Greek Orthodox woman married to a Greek Orthodox man.
  2.  Greek Orthodox men. 
  3.  A non-Greek Orthodox man married to a Greek Orthodox woman.

St Nicholas Kitchen

Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral that provides hot meals, helping hands and meaningful relationships to the impoverished in our community. The heart for this ministry is illustrated in the book of Matthew 25:35-36:

 “….For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me….”

St. Nicholas Kitchen will continue preparing the Monday meals from 7:30 – 11:00 am. The meals will be delivered Monday's to the new Hope Center at the Sheppard center where the meals will be given to those in need by their, and our volunteers. We still need volunteers, food and monetary donations. Meals will be served from 11:00 – 12:00 pm. For further information, please call Chris Palaidis at (727) 808-3895.
