Choosing Quality Seeds for Your Garden

As you know, I enjoy my garden. Not only can a garden produce delicious food for our bodies to be nourished, but it can also provide many valuable lessons for life. One thing every gardener must understand is the quality of seeds for our particular soil. Certain seeds are not capable of bringing fruit in certain climates. Similarly, every gardener must learn to understand his particular soil and take the necessary actions to work the soil (to soften it), to amend the soil (to make it more fertile) and to weed the soil (to allow for a good crop), all in order to receive high quality seed.

Jesus knew our salvation required much the same care as our garden. But in the case of our salvation, there is no chance for a bad seed, since the seed is Christ Himself! We could say the seed of Christ’s Gospel is an heirloom seed. Heirloom seeds, when placed in fertile and well worked soil, bring delicious and plentiful fruit. The means, our focus must be on the soil of our soul.

According the Gospel, the soil of our soul is either;

…hardened not allowing the Word of God to penetrate,

…filled with temptation not allowing the Word of God to deeply root,

…filled with the cares of riches and the pleasures of life not allowing the Word of God to bring fruit,

…rich and fertile allowing the Word of God to root deeply and produce a crop a hundredfold.

We already know the seed is perfect. The only thing left is our soul. Will it be rich and fertile and receive the Word of God? Something to think about, before we go blaming the seed for our lack of fruit.

The teaching of this Sunday’s epistle from St. Paul to Titus 3:10-11 is about how to deal with people who cause problems in our community. It's all about keeping a peaceful and spiritually uplifting environment. People who cause trouble and people who create divisions can mess up the unity and progress of a group, whether it's a church, family, workplace, or an online community. We shouldn't give up on these people, but instead, we should try to guide, correct, and if necessary, keep them away to protect the overall spiritual health of the community.

The process starts with helping these people change and make up for their actions. This often means giving them advice, teaching them, and warning them with love and patience, in a Christian way. In real-life situations, like family get-togethers, church ministries and events, friendships, work, or school, we can use similar ideas. For example, think about a family member who keeps causing arguments or trouble at gatherings. At first, we would try to talk and help them, but if that doesn't work, we might need to limit their involvement in family events, not to judge them, but to keep peace. Similarly, in a church, if someone keeps causing problems during meetings or events, the leaders and other members might try to talk to and support them. But if the behavior doesn't stop, they might have to restrict their participation in some activities to protect the community's spiritual growth.

As Orthodox Christians, our faith teaches us to be there for people who are struggling, instead of ignoring them. Think about your family – you might have a relative who often causes arguments during gatherings. In this situation, being a good Orthodox Christian means trying to understand their problems and offering support. This could involve talking to them calmly and helping them see how their actions affect the family.

Now, think about your church community. Imagine someone there who often creates problems during meetings or events. Our faith encourages us not to just walk away from them. Instead, we should try to talk to them, along with the church leaders and other members. We aim to help them understand the impact of their actions and work towards bringing the community together. But, if the disruptive behavior continues, there might be a need to set some limits to keep the church community's spiritual growth on track.

Throughout all of this, we turn to prayer for guidance and ask for divine help in making things better. By being patient, understanding, and loving in our families and church, we show by example how our faith values helping people who are struggling. This is what it means to be an Orthodox Christian – offering help instead of turning our backs on those who need it.

Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we chant the Service to the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which gathered in Nicaea in 787 under the holy Patriarch Tarasius and during the reign of the Empress Irene and her son, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, to refute the Iconoclast heresy, which had received imperial support beginning with the Edict issued in 726 by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. Many of the holy Fathers who condemned Iconoclasm at this holy Council later died as Confessors and Martyrs for the holy Icons during the second assult of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, especially during the reigns of Leo the Armenian and Theophilus.

Lucian the Martyr of Antioch

This Saint was from Samosata, the son of pious parents. He established a catechetical school in Antioch, and taught the correct doctrines of the Faith and made clear the parts of the divine Scriptures that were difficult to understand. He edited the Old Testament translation from the Hebrew tongue, and published it in an excellent edition, free from every heretical corruption and interpolation. He travelled to Nicomedia to strengthen the faithful there in their contests for Christ, and was accused before Maximinus, with whom he conversed openly. When he had made a defence of the Christian Faith, he was condemned to imprisonment where, in 311, he died of hunger and thirst.

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Wisdom of the Fathers

When you see life's pleasures, beware that they might not distract you, for they conceal death's snares. Likewise a fisherman casts not his hook to no purpose. As bait for his hook, the enemy uses the delusion of sensuality to arouse desire, that he might thereby catch men's souls and subject them to himself. A soul which has been caught to serve the enemy's will then serves as a snare for other souls, for it conceals the grief of sin with its apparent delight.

Since there are certain people who find great fault with us for adoring and honoring both the image of the Savior and that of our Lady, as well as those of the rest of the saints and servants of Christ, let them hear how from the beginning God made man to His own image. For what reason, then, do we adore one another, except because we have been made to the image of God? As the inspired Basil, who is deeply learned in theology, says: "the honor paid to the image conveys to the original.," and the original is the thing imaged from which the copy is made.

St Nicholas Kitchen

Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral that provides hot meals, helping hands and meaningful relationships to the impoverished in our community. The heart for this ministry is illustrated in the book of Matthew 25:35-36:

“….For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me….”

St. Nicholas Kitchen will continue preparing the Monday meals from 7:30 – 11:00 am. The meals will be delivered Monday's to the new Hope Center at the Sheppard center where the meals will be given to those in need by their, and our volunteers.
