Message from Father John

Zacchaeus’ curiosity and thirst to see Jesus

We have two kinds of curiosity, the sinful curiosity that can morally pollute and harm us; and the Healthy curiosity that can inspire and  save us.

In his newly developed inner struggle for meaning in his life, Zacchaeus was motivated by a healthy desire to see Jesus, for whom he had heard so many good reports.  He humbled himself and ran to climb the sycamore tree to see Jesus.

Nothing escapes the attention of God; even our innermost thoughts are known to Him.  Jesus saw  the change that was taking place in Zacchaeus’ heart.  He invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home.   Zacchaeus  repented for his unjust life and exploitation of the people.  He made amends right there and then where he met Jesus.  He promised to give half of his riches to the poor and pay back fourfold those people he had defrauded.  Jesus declared  that Salvation came to the house of Zacchaeus.

Our Church presents these biblical passages to us in order to touch our own heart,to help us have a conversation with our inner, spiritual self.  To acknowledge our personal sins; to see the spiritual emptiness and guilt they reside  in us;  but not to be discouraged because we have sinned and failed, but rather to become humble, to repent for our sins and shortcomings; to come with a contrite heart to Christ,  to confess our sins, seek His forgiveness and find restoration and new hope.

Christ will once again say, “salvation has come”  to us.  We will regain our inner peace and purpose for our life.  We will see the other people with love and compassion.  We will acquire a Christian desire to help others as much as we can, as did Zacchaeus.

Let us learn from Zacchaeus and respond to the call of Christ to find peace, joy and fulfillment for our daily  life.

With love,

Fr.John P. Angelis

Saints and Feasts

January 26

15th Sunday of Luke

January 26

Xenophon & his Companions

This Saint, a wealthy nobleman of Constantinople, was filled with piety toward God. He had two sons, Arcadius and John, whom he sent to Beirut to study law. But they were shipwrecked during their voyage; barely saved, they forsook all things and departed for Palestine. Saint Xenophon and his wife Mary, ignorant of what had happened, went in search of their sons. On finding them in Jerusalem, dressed in the habit of monks, they also took up the monastic life. And thus, having completed their lives in holiness, they departed for the Lord about the beginning of the sixth century. Saint Xenophon and his sons reposed at Saint Sabbas Monastery, and Mary at the Monastery of Saint Theodosius.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Tone

O Christ, the angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, the guards were as dead, and Mary stood by the sepulcher, seeking Your sacred body. You destroyed Hades yet remained untouched by it. You encountered the Virgin and through her, bestowed Life. Glory to You who has risen from the dead!

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Tone

The Offspring of Selyvria and Guardian of Aegina, the true friend of virtue who appeared in the last years. Oh Nectarios we faithful honor you as a godly servant of Christ! For you bring forth healings of every kind for those who piously cry out: Glory to Christ who has glorified you, Glory to him who made you wondrous, glory to him who workest healings for all through you.

Seasonal Kontakion in the First Tone

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to Timothy 4:9-15.

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and suffer reproach, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress.

Gospel Reading

15th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 19:1-10

At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy.  Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy  (with a visiting Priest).  That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available.  In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages.  Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek.  If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers  and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy  with Father John in the Seattle area.  During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle.  The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is
https://goarch.zoom.us/j/98009355049?pwd=UmttUUN2aG4raUc4WS9Zelo1REYxdz09
On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service  with a Parish Fellowship Time.  This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.
All are welcome to join in the celebration these Christian Orthodox Services.
