Message from Father John

 

 

“REPENT, (Change your mind), FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND!”

 

The gospel lesson (Matt.4:4-17) for the Sunday after Theophany, sets the terms for our salvation:  

 

 “Repent, Metanoite, change your way of thinking!”  Why? Because the Kingdom of God, “God’s Rule” has already touched us, has arrived.

 

Man was created to be in communion with God, to live in God‘s presence. But his disobedience of God allowed something foreign to come into his nature, sin. For man succumbed to the devil’s temptation and allowed the devil and sin to come into him. God did not create sin. Sin is a parasite which the devil introduced in God’s good nature, after man sinned.

 

When Christ came, He asked the people to “Repent, to change their way of thinking, and return in humility to God.” For God has always loved man and wants him to return to Him, to his original communion with Him. God’s love has the true antidote to heal him from his illness, his sin. The antidote, the medicine, is His love who sent His Beloved Son to the world to save him. Christ taught man afresh His Father’s Holy Will, confirmed His teaching with His miracles, poured out His blood on the Cross for his salvation, rose from the dead and ascended to heaven to open the way for man to hope and follow.

 

As we have entered the New Year, God has renewed His Saving invitation to all of us: “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” God has done His part for our salvation, our renewal. Now He wants our free response and willing cooperation with

 

His Divine Will to renew and save us.

 

Without self-awareness and repentance, we resemble a car that has taken out its brakes and is rolling down the hill to its destruction. But the good driver uses his breaks to control the speed and direction of his car. The same way, the wise, believing person follows the saving teachings of God, repents for his daily sins and returns in repentance to God to find forgiveness and receive God’s abundant Grace in His Sacraments to live His daily Christian life.

Afterfeast of the Theophany of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

Gregory of Nyssa

Saint Gregory, the younger brother of Basil the Great, illustrious in speech and a zealot for the Orthodox Faith, was born in 331. His brother Basil was encouraged by their elder sister Macrina to prefer the service of God to a secular career (see July 19); Saint Gregory was moved in a similar way by his godly mother Emily, who, when Gregory was still a young man, implored him to attend a service in honor of the holy Forty Martyrs at her retreat at Annesi on the River Iris. Saint Gregory came at his mother's bidding, but being wearied with the journey, and feeling little zeal, he fell asleep during the service. The Forty Martyrs then appeared to him in a dream, threatening him and reproaching him for his slothfulness. After this he repented and became very diligent in the service of God.

Gregory became bishop in 372, and because of his Orthodoxy he was exiled in 374 by Valens, who was of one mind with the Arians. After the death of Valens in 378, Gregory was recalled to his throne by the Emperor Gratian. He attended the Local Council of Antioch, which sent him to visit the churches of Arabia and Palestine, which had been defiled and ravaged by Arianism. He attended the Second Ecumenical Council, which was assembled in Constantinople in 381. Having lived some sixty years and left behind many remarkable writings, he reposed about the year 395. The acts of the Seventh Ecumenical Council call him 'Father of Fathers."

Dometian, Bishop of Melitene

Saint Dometian lived in the years of the Emperor Justin II, who reigned from 565 to 578, and the Emperor Maurice, who reigned from 582 to 602. Born of pious parents named Theodore and Eudocia, he received a thorough education in both secular and sacred knowledge. After he had lived in lawful wedlock a short time, his wife died, and he, for his virtue was made Bishop of Melitene in Armenia at the age of thirty. As a kinsman and trusted friend of the Emperor Maurice, he received from him great largesse, which he spent on the building of churches and the help of the poor; he was entrusted with the dealings of Byzantium with Persia. While in Constantinople, he reposed in peace in the year 602.

Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world.

O God of our Fathers, ever dealing with us according to Thy gentleness: take not Thy mercy from us, but by their entreaties guide our life in peace.

You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light."

    Gospel and Epistle Readings

    Epistle Reading

    Prokeimenon. First Tone. Psalm 48.3,1.
    My mouth shall speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall bring forth understanding.
    Verse: Hear this all you nations.

    The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.

    BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

    At that time, Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by John for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, added this to them all, that he shut up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

    CHURCH SERVICES
    Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy.  Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy  (with a visiting Priest).  That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available.  In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
    Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages.  Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek.  If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
    On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers  and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy  with Father John in the Seattle area.  During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
    Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle.  The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is

    On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service  with a Parish Fellowship Time.  This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.
    All are welcome to join in the celebration these Christian Orthodox Services.

    Tri-Cities Coptic Church Services
    Saint Mary and Saint Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church.    This Coptic Church is currently holding services at the St. Nectarios Church.  A Saturday or Sunday Holy Liturgy with a visiting Priest is normally held once per month either in the Tricities or in Spokane.  All are invited to attend.
