Message from Father John

CORDIAL CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

We hear many superficial greetings these days.

Some are holiday greetings and others commercial.

They do not spring from the inner being, from the heart.

They resemble withered, cut flowers, without aroma.
.

We have kept the gifts, the entertainment for the Feast,

But we have taken Christ out of the reason for the Feast.

They are many lights around us; they impress and blind us;

But they are not the heavenly Light the shepherds saw.
.

“They were a thousand lights, but they were not the light,”

The pious poet exclaimed, in his deep, inner regret.

Man needs the Light of the Incarnate Christ, of God,

In order to find his true, Christian life orientation.
.

An old story that I have heard about a beautiful box,

Will help us get an insight of the Holy Day’s spirit.

A precious diamond gift the lover gave to his beloved,

And to protect it, she put it in an ornately carved box.
.

The next generation placed the gift in a new, beautiful box,

To protect the gift from the oncoming ravages of time..

The following generation placed it in a luxurious box,

Without knowing what was in the original, inherited box.
.

The beautiful boxes covered the original precious gift.

The boxes stole the honor and beauty of the original gift.

That gift expressed the love of the lover to his beloved,

As the Birth of Christ expresses the saving love of God.
.

God, our Father, loved us, His children, very much,

When each one of us was a sinner, and unworthy.

When we were drowning in disobedience and sin,

He graciously sent us His Only-begotten Son to save us.
.

He became incarnate, took upon Himself our human nature.

He cleansed it, He restored it to its original beauty.

“Without change or division, He united it to His divine nature.”

To enable each one of us, united to Him, to live eternally.
.

In our baptism, He washed us, He cleansed us, He forgave us,

He gave us His Holy Spirit; He sealed us as His own children.

He fed us and gave us drink in His Eucharistic Supper,

And He planted us in His Church, in His spiritual garden.
.

Christ, our Savior, expects good fruits from all of us now,

To diligently multiply the talents He gave us at birth.

The Divine Grace He bestowed on us will truly enable us.

But He needs our voluntary cooperation to achieve this..
.

Mary, the Theotokos, said with humility to Archangel Gabriel,

“Here is your servant! Let it be to me according to your word.”

The just Joseph conquered his human suspicions and fears;

He humbly obeyed the divine revelation for his family.
.

If we also obey with humility the message of the angels,

We will enjoy the Divine Light with the simple shepherds,

The Divine Star will guide us to the Mother and Child.

In Him we will discover the Divine Treasure, the Divine Son.
.

The Divine Light will ever shine in us and brings us joy.

It will fill us with Godly peace and indescribable gladness.

Christmas will regain its original beauty in our hearts.

We’ll enjoy it as did the Shepherds, Joseph and the Theotokos..

.

Fr. John P. Angelis

BLESSED CHRISTMAS!

Hymns of the Day

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Nativity in the Fourth Tone

Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, hath shined the light of knowledge upon the world; for thereby they that worshipped the stars were instructed by a star to worship Thee, the Sun of Righteousness, and to know Thee, the Dayspring from on high. O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Tone

Today, the Virgin bears Him who is transcendent, and the earth presents the cave to Him who is beyond reach. Angels, along with shepherds glorify Him. The Magi make their way to Him by a star. For a new child has been born for us, the God before all ages.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Tone. Luke 1: 46-48.
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 2:11-18.

BRETHREN, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Gospel Reading

Synaxis of the Holy Theotokos
The Reading is from Matthew 2:13-23

When the wise men departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son."

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more." But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaos reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy.  Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy  (with a visiting Priest).  That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available.  In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages.  Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek.  If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers  and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy  with Father John in the Seattle area.  During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle.  The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is
https://goarch.zoom.us/j/98009355049?pwd=UmttUUN2aG4raUc4WS9Zelo1REYxdz09
On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service  with a Parish Fellowship Time.  This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.
All are welcome to join in the celebration these Christian Orthodox Services.
