FROM THE PAST (2004)
For many years, Maria Touvannas created a monthly publication for St. Nectarios entitled the “St. Nectarios Messenger.” At first it was mailed to the Parish each month – later it was distributed mainly by email. Below is text the St. Nectarios Messenger for June 2004. We are indebted to her for the many years and many ways that she has supported and does support St. Nectarios. Thank You!
This item from the past will bring back many good memories for long term members. The Greek Nite was a lot fun!

Jesus converted Simon’s, Peter’s boat into a pulpit. He could now be seen and be heard by the people as He sat in the boat in the shallow water of the Sea of Galilee. In addition, when he finished his teaching of the people, Jesus performed a miracle; and began to form the chorus of his 12 disciples, as Saint Luke tells us.
In this week’s Gospel reading. St. Luke the evangelist wrote an orderly account of Jesus' ministry for someone named Theophilos. We start reading St. Luke’s gospel in this liturgical season and I invite all of you to start reading it with me.
Jesus used every opportunity to come close to the people to teach them His Father’s Holy Will and confirm his teaching with miracles. We see this in this Sunday’s gospel lesson. We also see the beginning of the forming of the chorus of his 12 disciples, who are going to continue his mission on earth after his ascension to heaven. The Holy Spirit would enable them to carry on his mission.
Jesus, with the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, which he sent to his disciples from his Father, established his Church to carry on his work. The Christians are the members of his church, who, together with the ordained clergy, continue this saving work of God, until Jesus returns. With their good example and their Christian teaching, the Christians attract new members to the church and perpetuate the mission of the church. “for Christianity is more ‘caught’ than taught.”. Our Christian example speaks louder than our words.
Let us all, as members of his church, respond to Jesus' invitation to follow him, like the first fishermen did and bear witness to him with our good example and Christian words.
With love,
Fr. John P. Angelis
This saint was known for the many miracles he worked and for his apostolic zeal in shepherding the flock of Sinope. He contested for the Faith during the reign of the Emperor Trajan, in the year 102, when he was burned to death in a bath-house. A homily in his honour was composed by Saint John Chrysostom. The translation of his holy relics is celebrated on July 23.

Prokeimenon. Fourth Tone. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.
The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 16:13-24.
Brethren, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.
1st Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 5:1-11
At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

CHURCH SERVICES
Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Each month, we try to have at least one Divine Liturgy (with a visiting Priest). That Service is normally on a Saturday (or a Special Service/Feast weekday) and is scheduled when a Priest is available. In addition to communion during the Service, private meetings with the Priest are available by appointment (for personal matters, planning future events, and Confession).
Special Invitation - Saint Nectarios Church welcomes all: During Divine Liturgy, which is mostly in English, the Lord's Prayer is said by parishioners in their native languages. Currently the prayer is normally said in English, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Greek. If you wish to participate (and perhaps add a language), just let us know.
On most weeks, we remotely celebrate Saturday Vespers and Sunday Online Divine Liturgy with Father John in the Seattle area. During the remote Divine Liturgy, Communion is served to Father's attending family and friends - but is unavailable to those participating online.
Online Greek Orthodox Vespers and Other Special Services are normally celebrated online with Father John in Seattle. The link for joining Zoom to actively participate in on-line Services is
https://goarch.zoom.us/j/98009355049?pwd=UmttUUN2aG4raUc4WS9Zelo1REYxdz09
On the last Sunday of each month, there normally is a Typica Reader Service with a Parish Fellowship Time. This in-Church Service is held as an opportunity to bring the local community together - and hopefully eventually returning St. Nectarios to having a full time Priest.
All are welcome to join in the celebration these Christian Orthodox Services.
