Orthros: 8:45 am.
Divine Liturgy: 10 a.m.

Always a Spiritual Focus, First
Dearest Parish Families,
This coming Sunday’s Service shows us a good question: what is the ultimate symbol of our faith?
The answer is the cross that Jesus Christ was crucified on and his actual Resurrection that came from his crucifixion, on the third day later. This is the cross we receive at our Holy Sacrament of Baptism, the cross we wear, the cross we profess, the cross we see every time behind the Holy Altar.
On this Sunday, September 14th, we recognise and venerate the Raising of the Holy Cross, found by Saint Helen in the third century. After our Divine Liturgy, we culminate in the brief Service of our Exaltation of the Holy Cross in reverence.
By our understanding of the Cross in our lives, we become free to focus on our faith. It means we can look beyond superstitions, such as the evil eye—the mati. Even as a teenager, I could never understand why, if people have their crosses, why would they want a mati? Why do some people wear a mati along with their cross? We need to understand that some people confuse religion with culture. I’ve even seen some people wear their mati on the same chain as their cross. I try to understand which symbol they are worshipping. I remember the teenager who wore a gold cross (his baptismal cross) on his gold chain and, on that same chain, he wore a gold Playboy bunny. What was his priority?
By this, I mean to suggest that it would help us to understand our priorities. The blue mati is not Greek, though it has invaded our Greek culture. . Look up the history on the internet. The blue mati comes from Saudi Arabia and is a symbol of witchcraft, the idea of fighting evil by evil. It migrated from Saudi Arabia to Turkey and then to Greece by the Ottoman Empire conquest. We Greek people have been inundated by Turkish culture for the past 500 years, until we falsely believe it is our own culture.
Our culture is our faith in Jesus Christ and Christianity. I cringe when people come up to receive Holy Communion, wearing matia/evil eyes. It’s alien to our faith. I remember meeting a priest who never gave Holy Communion to anyone wearing a mati, which just reminded me of how serious the subject was to him.
This Sunday, we venerate the raising of the Holy Cross, its Exaltation. Do come and join us. And reconsider what place the mati has in your lives, if you have them. Do leave them at home when you join us in Church to worship. It is a helpful understanding to discern the difference between religion and culture, between worship and superstition.
Faithfully, Father Samaras
No Orthros (Resurrection) Gospel today. Today, we have the Morning Gospel of the Holy Cross, according to Saint John 12:28 – 36
On September 14 is the worldwide Exaltation (i.e. Elevation) of the precious and life-giving Cross. We also commemorate the repose of our father among the saints John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople. He reposed on this date, but because of the feast of the Holy Cross his feast was moved to November 13; the most pious empress Placilla, the wife of emperor Theodosius the Great; our fathers among the saints who assembled at the holy Sixth Ecumenical Council, during the reign of Constantine IV Pogonatos, father of Justinian II Rhinotmetos, while Sergios led the Church of Constantinople and Agatho the Church of Rome. The Council convened in Trullo of the Palace called Ovatus, to anathematize Sergios, Pyrrhos and Peter and Paul, who had been Bishops of Constantinople, as well as Macrovios of Antioch, Cyrus of Alexandria, and Honorius of Rome, and Stephen and Polychronios and their followers. This Council convened during the reign of the above mentioned Constantine Pogonatos, but its canons were published during the reign of his son Justinian. On this day, we also commemorate the holy Martyr Papas; the holy Martyr Theocles; Saint Valerian the infan; the holy new devout Martyr Makarios, who witnessed in Thessaloniki in the year 1527, and who had been a disciple of Saint Niphon, Patriarch of Constantinople.

The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy.
The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross
The Reading is from John 12:28-36
The Lord said, "Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out: and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." He said this to show by what death he was to die. The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ remains for ever. How can you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?" Jesus said to them, "The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he goes. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light."

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 98.9,1.
Exalt the Lord our God.
Verse: The Lord reigns; let the people tremble.
The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 1:18-24.
Brethren, the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart." Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Grave Mode.
The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross
The Reading is from John 19:6-11, 13-20, 25-28, 30
At that time, when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him." The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."
When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer. Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?" Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin." When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. Then when Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross
