Always a Spiritual Focus, First

January 12th, 2025

Always a Spiritual Focus, First

Dearest Parish Family Members,

Wow. Don’t blink. I blinked and now, January is almost half-over already. I’m still not totally used to even writing down 2025 yet.

The one thing God has that we don’t is that God is simultaneous—and we aren’t. We are trapped in our narrative beginning, middle, and end. And how funny it is that, the older we become, it seems the faster time begins to speed by.

This is why one of the biggest lessons I’ve needed to learn—and really, all of us can benefit by learning—is how to take the extra effort to slow things down sometimes, in order to really be able to appreciate what we have in our time. And one of the helpful ways I’ve seen to help us slow down is to try to stop living lives of complete distraction and reaction. Sometimes, it seems that all of us get caught up in always reacting in our lives, going from crisis to crisis. And this is often how we lose control. We are always reacting and never have much of a chance to sit back and be able to appreciate our time. Distractions and emergencies always seem to keep us off-balance.

I now value the words of Henry David Thoreau who once said he wanted to live a life of deliberateness. In fact, his exact words were this:

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms...”

From this, I found such similar sentiments in our Bible. For example, in the 46th Psalm, when God himself says, “Be still and know I am God.” It is the greatest encouragement for us to strive to, at times, get off the spinning cycle of reaction and stress. This is actually the helpful purpose of our coming Great Lent, in which we may practice fasting, one of our best tools to stop and remember who we are (Christians) and what we are doing and why. To me, this is what it means to “live deliberately” as Thoreau echoes. We gain control and lessen our lives of haphazard reaction. If we don’t get to “Be still,” we at least get to slow down and look around us, giving us a moment to be reflective and observe what is going on around us. We get to step outside of the hectic circles and see our lives more clearly. This is what Great Lent and periods of fasting give us in our lives:  a chance to slow down and appreciate, and a chance to be still and know God more fully.

So, for our new 2025, let’s come to Sunday church services in which we may find rest from our hectic lives of stress and concern. At least, for a few hours per week, in which we may remember God in our lives, to be still for a bit and experience prayer and gratitude.

Let us be together in this space of stillness and worship, and strengthen each other as this year proceeds.

Faithfully, Father Samaras

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Theophany Afterfeast in the First Mode

Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Seventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:1-10

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that He must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Seventh Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13.

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

First Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Epiphany
The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Tatiana the Martyr of Rome

Saint Tatiana was the daughter of a most distinguished consul of Rome. She became a deaconess of the Church, and for her confession of the Faith of Christ, she endured many torments. As she was suffering, angels punished her tormentors with the same torments they inflicted on her, until they cried out that they could no longer endure the scourges invisibly brought upon them. She was beheaded during the reign of Alexander Severus (111-135).
