Always a Spiritual Focus, First
Dearest Parish Family Members,
Would you like to hear about a Saint who has written about another Saint? The very first book I ever translated from Greek into English was the book written by Saint Paisios about the Saint in his personal life, Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia. I honestly recommend this book highly to you. Here is how you can find this book: Elder Paisios of Mount Athos (2021). Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian (5 ed.). Souroti, Thessaloniki, Greece: Holy Monastery "Evangelist John the Theologian".
Because I was a young student at the time, it took me a long time to be able to translate every page of that book. It was like having to look up almost every other word in the Greek language. But I learned so much from the exercise. I got to know Saint Arsenios and to see the connection between him and the young baby who would grow up to become Saint Paisios. The book covers the life of Saint Arsenios and details some of the amazing miracles he performed to help the people of his village area. I felt such a strong connection to this Saint, because I prayed as I also translated. The book was later published in English in Greece for the benefit of all people. The publishers used somebody’s else’s translational work, not mine.
But still, I value this book so much becaue it gives the English-speaking world such a good picture of the life of a Saint here in the then-20th Century. What captured it all for me was the realization that saints are never just people who died centuries ago, but there are actual saints who are alive today. And that was the biggest wake-up call for me. Saints are also contemporary, living people. I translated this book because I used to go and visit Father Paisios, at the time, and he used to counsel me. And now, I’ve lived long enough to see Father Paisios be recognised as a Saint, since his passing on to Heaven. I know another priest who is so clearly a saint, who is still alive and now 85 years old.
All of this has inspired me to share with you that sainthood is called for all of us. There are miracles that can happen in our own lives and in our own prayer-lives. All we have to do is keep our hearts open and surround ourselves with such spiritual examples. Please start by getting a copy of this book and reading it. It’s inspirational. It’s much better for us than just watching TV. We can learn of a saint’s life, and be impacted by his example.
I am so fond of remembering one of my seminary classmates. He had small icons filled on the walls of his dormitory room. When he was asked by the seminary priests in charge there why he had so many icons, I can never forget his reply. He said, “Because they are all my friends.” I never got over that answer and honestly believe this is how we should regard all the saints: as being our friends and advocates, our support system. I so encourage all of you reading this to expand your lives a little bit, by reading more about who are the daily saints we commemorate every day. Find out a little bit more about their lives, their examples, what they did, how they helped others. And by doing so, maybe you, too, will consider them as personal friends to you as your lives improve from learning about them and knowing them better.
Come join us every Sunday as we commemorate this saints of each day and see how they can positively impact our ongoing lives. And this Sunday coming up is the commemoration of Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia.
Faithfully, Father Samaras

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in My side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and My God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life in His name.
Ninth Orthros Gospel
Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Psalm 46.6,1.
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19.
Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.
Third Mode.
8th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 10:25-37
At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."
But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."
8th Sunday of Luke
Of these Saints, Olympas and Rodion became disciples of Peter, the chief Apostle, and came to Rome, where they were beheaded by Nero. The others reposed in peace, having become bishops: Sosipater of Iconium, Quartus of Beirut, and Erastus of Paneas, or Paneias (which was also called Caesarea of Philippi); Saint Erastus had been chamberlain of the city of Corinth (Rom.16:23).
Saint Orestes was from Tyana of Cappadocia. During the persecution of Diocletian, this Martyr's ankles were pierced with long nails; being bound to a wild horse and violently dragged by it, he gave up his spirit in the year 289.
