Always a Spiritual Focus, First

 

Dearest Parish Family Members,

 

 CHRISTOS ANESTI again and always to one and all in our Parish Family.

 Truly, these are the words that resonate for us throughout history, today and tomorrow unto Eternity.

 As we celebrate today, this Sunday, the miracle of Christ in healing the Paralytic, we also give thanks to the Lord for whatever health we may have. We continue beautifying our house of worship, and we are grateful for every improvement we had made and now enjoy.

As I reflect on this Sunday miracle of the Paralytic being healed, I reflect also on our own states of health. As many of you may know, I’ve been dealing with the ravages of “Long Covid” from November, 2022 to November 2023:  twelve months of basic hell. And the doctors couldn’t even fully understand the chronic sickness. Now that Long Covid has finally left me, I have come to several observations:  nobody can control health. Health is just what happens to us. And truly, our states of health are pure circumstance, and all we can honestly do is to simply deal with whatever we “inherit” in our health. For me, I was so used to being high-functioning and racing around, accomplishing services to our people. It took my chronic year of chronic illness to understand what it means to have to slow down, to become dependent on others, and to really be grateful for any help. It seems we are often not as independent and “immortal” as we like to think of ourselves. And even though I’ve just now gone through ten days in the hospital with another case of pneumonia (the “kind leftover” from Long Covid), it really brought into my focus the gift of breathing that we have. You really don’t appreciate breathing until you begin to lose it.

  

Why do I bring this up? Because it helps our lives if we can just learn to recognize and appreciate what we have in this life. Even if it is a measure of health. We can just as easily and just as swiftly have it so much worse. I think of the Paralytic. I’ve been to Bethesda in Old Jerusalem and have seen the now-dry site of the Pool of Bethesda where Jesus met the Paralytic. And the “five porticoes,” the five arches, are still there. I now understand the level of patience required of any person who suffers from ill health, and the prayer for recovery. I understand what all of us go through in our lives.

 

 All I can suggest is that, whatever we are personally dealing with, we can find emotional support in our faith, in our worship services. In the end, we gain perspective. We can gain patience and forebearance. We can be together and help each other. This is what it means to be part of a parish family and a community. Sure, we may have annoyances we have to deal with, some small, some large. But the one thing we don’t do is give up and walk away. Whatever our personal case is, we deal with reality and don’t abandon ourselves. Because God doesn’t abandon us.

 

 This is why it’s important to stay with our parish family. And each Sunday Gospel lesson gives us another perspective to help us. So, please do take this personal invitation from me to join us each Sunday. From continuity, we gain context and understanding. And growing strength. And growing health, whether physical or spiritual. Really hear this Sunday’s Gospel lesson and our brief discussion on it afterward to really gain some depth with the context and details.

 

 All that is left is for me to humbly thank each and every one of you, from our chanters to our parish council, to our volunteers and to all who gather with us for worship services. My continual prayer is that we may stay strong together and lift us all together in faith and worship.

 On May 26th, 2024, we commemorate the holy and glorious Apostle Carpos, one of the Seventy Apostles; the holy Apostle Alphaeos, died in peace; Saint Abercios, son of the Apostle Alphaeos, martyred; Saint Helen, Abercios’ sister, martyred; Saint Alexander the neo-martyr of Thessaloniki witnessed in Smyrna; and today, the fourth Sunday of Pascha, we remember the Paralytic, and appropriately celebrate the miracle worked on him.

While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. And He said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" and they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. In those days, as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints that lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him entreating him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went with them. And when he had come, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, and showing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

Sunday of the Paralytic
The Reading is from John 5:1-15

At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked.

Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet." But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.' "They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

Ἔστι δὲ ἐν τοῖς ῾Ιεροσολύμοις ἐπὶ τῇ προβατικῇ κολυμβήθρα, ἡ ἐπιλεγομένη Ἑβραϊστὶ Βηθεσδά, πέντε στοὰς ἔχουσα. ἐν ταύταις κατέκειτο πλῆθος πολὺ τῶν ἀσθενούντων, τυφλῶν, χωλῶν, ξηρῶν, ἐκδεχομένων τὴν τοῦ ὕδατος κίνησιν. ἄγγελος γὰρ κατὰ καιρὸν κατέβαινεν ἐν τῇ κολυμβήθρᾳ, καὶ ἐταράσσετο τὸ ὕδωρ· ὁ οὖν πρῶτος ἐμβὰς μετὰ τὴν ταραχὴν τοῦ ὕδατος ὑγιὴς ἐγίνετο ᾧ δήποτε κατείχετο νοσήματι. ἦν δέ τις ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖ τριάκοντα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη ἔχων ἐν τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ αὐτοῦ. τοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς κατακείμενον, καὶ γνοὺς ὅτι πολὺν ἤδη χρόνον ἔχει, λέγει αὐτῷ· θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι; ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ ἀσθενῶν· Κύριε, ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἔχω, ἵνα ὅταν ταραχθῇ τὸ ὕδωρ, βάλῃ με εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν· ἐν ᾧ δὲ ἔρχομαι ἐγώ, ἄλλος πρὸ ἐμοῦ καταβαίνει. λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· ἔγειρε, ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει. καὶ εὐθέως ἐγένετο ὑγιὴς ὁ ἄνθρωπος, καὶ ἦρε τὸν κράβαττον αὐτοῦ καὶ περιεπάτει. ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ. ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ ᾿Ιουδαῖοι τῷ τεθεραπευμένῳ· σάββατόν ἐστιν· οὐκ ἔξεστί σοι ἆραι τὸν κράβαττον. ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς· ὁ ποιήσας με ὑγιῆ, ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν· ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει. ἠρώτησαν οὖν αὐτόν· τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ εἰπών σοι, ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει; ὁ δὲ ἰαθεὶς οὐκ ᾔδει τίς ἐστιν· ὁ γὰρ ᾿Ιησοῦς ἐξένευσεν ὄχλου ὄντος ἐν τῷ τόπῳ. μετὰ ταῦτα εὑρίσκει αὐτὸν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ἴδε ὑγιὴς γέγονας· μηκέτι ἁμάρτανε, ἵνα μὴ χεῖρόν σοί τι γένηται. ἀπῆλθεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἀνήγγειλε τοῖς ᾿Ιουδαίοις ὅτι ᾿Ιησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὸν ὑγιῆ.

Carpos and Alphaeus, Apostles of the 70

This holy Apostle was numbered with the Seventy, and ministered unto the holy Apostle Paul, journeying with him and conveying his epistles unto those to whom they were written. He became Bishop of Beroea in Thrace, where he endured great tribulations while bringing many of the heathen to holy Baptism, and also suffered martyrdom there. Saint Paul mentions him in II Timothy 4:13.
