Special Services

BLESSING OF THE OCEAN WATERS and DIVING FOR THE CROSS

This year we will again bless the waters of the ocean after our Sunday Agape Meal. Expect to head down towards the beach around 1-1:30pm. Assuming that the weather will cooperate, we will go down to the ocean and after the customary short prayers we will bless the ocean with holy water from that morning's Great Blessing service.  Then, the cross will be thrown in the ocean three times. Those who come prepared to dive can go in the water to retrieve the cross and be totally washed by the purified water of the ocean. Blessed is the one who gets the cross and blessed are the ones washing themselves in the holy waters.

Diving for the Cross: this is a very special opportunity to be submerged under the newly cleansed waters, just like we did at our baptism. There are many things we pray for these waters to wash away... All those interested in the special Theophany washing are encouraged to come prepared and participate in this huge blessing. Please contact Father Ion ahead of time for more details.

House Blessings after Theophany

Father Ion will be available to do house blessings starting January 13. Please contact him to schedule a visit for the blessing of your house.

Stewardship News

YOUR 2025 PLEDGE IS NEEDED

We turn our attention towards stewardship for the upcoming year, when we all re-evaluate our commitment to serve the Lord and cast our pledge for 2025.

Fill in the 2025 Pledge Card for 2025 HERE.

As a community, we are working toward tithing. What does this mean? How do you do that?

Tithing means giving 10% of your first fruits to God.  At first, giving 10% might seem difficult. But it is something that can be eased into very easily. We suggest you begin slowly.

Become a percentage giver: Look at how you are doing right now. Our Stewardship web site has a calculator you can use (CLICK HERE).

  • Enter what you give each month, or year and let the calculator tell you the percent you are currently giving.
  • Next, round up your percent giving to the next whole percent for 2025. If it was 5%, commit to at least 6%. If it was 6.2% round up to 7%.
  • NOW, increase by 1% every year, you will be on your way to tithing.

Fill in the 2025 Pledge Card for 2025 HERE.

BISHOP IOANNIS TO PRESIDE AT VESPERS FOR SAINT JOHN'S FEAST

We have a change in the plans for the feast of saint John: His eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos will not be able make it, as originally announced. Instead, we will be very blessed to host His Grace Bishop Ioannis for the 6pm Vespers and dinner on Monday evening. Other clergy from the area might join us as well.

We will be offering a festal potluck dinner right after the service. Angelina, Mary and Thimi will be working with the Fellowship Teams and Parish Council to organize the dinner.

A NEW BOOK AND A MESSAGE FROM ITS AUTHOR

Many of us remember John and Noelle Ehab. They were part of our community until a few years ago when they moved to Colorado. During their years here, they worked on a project that had to do with children refugees from Siria. John's goal was to write a book about it. Great news! The book is ready to go to print. Please see John's message below and visit the provided link to learn more about the exciting project and how you can help to make it happen.

I am writing to remind you that after many years of work, Backpack Full of Fear, my book, is finally ready for print. When we were preparing for our 4-month trip back in 2017, you and the community at St John's helped us fundraise to support refugees and build bridges which paved the way to making this book a reality. Thank you for all your help and your prayers for us.

Now that the book is finally being published, I would like to ask for your support once again. We need donations for our Kickstarter campaign and I ask you to help spread the word about our book. Because we are self-publishing, it is imperative that we raise enough money to get the book in print. Also, do keep in mind that Kickstarter is all or nothing, so if we don't raise our goal, we won't get any of the money. The Kickstarter ends January 27. The link is enclosed here: http://kck.st/4eLlwSw.

Blessings in Christ,
John Ehab

Eve of the Theophany of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

January 06

The Theophany of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, John the Forerunner, who was some six months older than Our Saviour according to the flesh, and had lived in the wilderness since his childhood, received a command from God and came into the parts of the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto the remission of sins. Then our Saviour also came from Galilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptism though He was the Master and John was but a servant. Whereupon, there came to pass those marvellous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that was being baptized and the voice was heard from the Heavens hearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, now baptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22). From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is also from this that the present feast is called "Theophany," that is, the divine manifestation, God's appearance among men. On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian baptism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the saving preaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Sixth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:36-53

At that time, having risen from the dead, Jesus went up and stood among His disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; handle Me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave Him a piece of broiled fish [and some honeycomb], and He took it and ate before them. Then He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then He opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name in all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands, He blessed them. While He blessed them, He parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the Temple blessing God.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 4:5-8.

TIMOTHY, my son, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry.

For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Gospel Reading

Sunday before Epiphany
The Reading is from Mark 1:1-8

The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophets, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.' John was baptizing in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
