Tatiana the Martyr of Rome

Saint Tatiana was the daughter of a most distinguished consul of Rome. She became a deaconess of the Church, and for her confession of the Faith of Christ, she endured many torments. As she was suffering, angels punished her tormentors with the same torments they inflicted on her, until they cried out that they could no longer endure the scourges invisibly brought upon them. She was beheaded during the reign of Alexander Severus (111-135).

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone

The women disciples of the Lord, having learned from the Angel the joyous news of the Resurrection and having rejected the ancestral decision, then told the apostles elatedly: Death has been stripped of its power; Christ God has risen, granting to the world His great mercy.

Apolytikion for Theophany Afterfeast in the First Tone

By thy baptism, O Lord, in the River Jordan, worship to the Trinity hath made its appearance; for the voice of the Lord did come forth to thee with the testimony, naming thee beloved Son; and the Spirit in the likeness of a dove, confirming the truth of the word. Wherefore, O thou who didst appear and lighted the world, O Christ, glory to thee.

The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

The Reading is from Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Wisdom of the Fathers

'Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand' (Matt. 4:7). Is at hand - that is, it has come by itself. It is not necessary to seek it for long - it seeks us, our free inclination; that is, you yourself must repent with heartfelt contrition. 'They were baptized of him' (is said of those baptized of John) 'confessing their sins' (Matt. 3:6); that is, they themselves acknowledged their sins. And as our prayer consists principally of penitence and asking forgiveness of our sins, it must absolutely be always sincere and perfectly free, not against our will, nor forced out of us by habit and custom.

Philoptochos News

Philoptochos News: Did You Know? The patron Saints of the national Philoptochos Society are Saints Cosmas and Damianos. During the 4th century, Cosmas and Damianos were physician brothers who became known as the Holy “Unmercenaries.” Their fame spread throughout the Empire as they invariably assisted the poor and the afflicted without the desire for any compensation. Because of the similar Christian dedication to the poor and the destitute, the Philoptochos Society chose to celebrate the founding of their organization with the feast day of these saints, which is November 1. The word philoptochos is the compound Greek word, “philos” and “ptochos” which mean “friend of the poor.”

Coffee hour: Coffee Hour this Sunday is being provided by the Philoptochos out of the leftovers of this Thursday's dinner hosting Metropolotin Gerasimos. This upcoming week is still open. Please sign up on the poster in the Hall if you are able to host one Sunday. The community we experience as we break bread together is an invaluable continuation of the work of the Divine Liturgy.
