Stewardship Reminder

As we plan and budget for the year, we would like to stress the importance of submitting your pledge form along with your donation. A donation without a pledge form makes it very difficult for the parish to responsibly budget and plan for ministries, outreach, programs, staffing, and facility needs without knowing what level of support to anticipate. A completed pledge form helps our Parish Council make sound financial decisions for the year ahead. Thank you for your faithful generosity and for helping our parish plan wisely by returning your pledge form promptly.

Stewardship...

We invite you to prayerfully consider  ways to give back in Time, Talent, and Treasure for 2026 by returning your pledge forms ASAP.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Eleventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:14-25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me." Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Eleventh Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Second Mode. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 9:2-12.

Brethren, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

11th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 18:23-35

The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

11th Sunday of Matthew

Fr. John's Message

LORD'S VOICE AUGUST 16TH 2026

THE SUNDAY GOSPEL (Matthew 18:23-35)
Forbearance and harshness

THE INFINITE SEA OF GOD’S LOVE FOR HUMANITY
Just yesterday we celebrated the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, a feast which we believers honor as the passage of the Virgin Mary into true Life. We also confessed that through her intercessions we are delivered “from death,” from the death of sin, of ignorance and forgetfulness of God, of egotism, and of the lack of true love.

Today’s Gospel reading, proclaimed during the Divine Liturgy, refers to the supreme evangelical virtue of love, from which, as from a root, all gifts and every virtue spring forth. It is the Parable of the Ten Thousand Talents, which presents in the most striking way both the love of God, who never ceases to forgive everyone, and His righteous anger, through which He instructs man so that, with the grace of Christ, people may strive to conform their lives, character, and actions to the holy commandments. These commandments ultimately reveal to us the Lord of Glory Himself.

Debtors before God
“Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother if he continues to wrong me? Up to seven times?” This question of the Apostle Peter gave Christ the occasion to narrate today’s parable. The usual limit among the Jews was to forgive up to three times. Peter, by saying “up to seven times,” perhaps expressed a more lenient view. But Christ’s answer overturned the religious and social assumptions of His time: “I do not say to you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” That is, not merely seven times, but seventy times seven – in other words, without limit.
In our passage we observe two striking contrasts, which we shall consider in order to understand its spiritual meaning more deeply. The first contrast is seen in the difference between the debts. The first servant in the story owed his master an
enormous sum of money, one that it was impossible for him to repay. He then begged his master, with contrition, to be longsuffering and merciful toward him. The master took pity on him and not only refrained from imprisoning him, but also set him free and forgave his debt. The second contrast is found in the foolishness of this same servant. Without having learned or been chastened by his master's philanthropy, when he met a fellow servant who owed him some insignificant amount of money, he began to demand payment harshly and violently. He even went so far as to have him thrown into prison, depriving him of his freedom. And here we may observe what ultimate ingratitude means! God, the Lord of all, in His compassion and ineffable love, forgives the sins of people. Yet a person with a hardened heart and a calloused conscience does not forgive his fellow man; he shows him no mercy. It is precisely on this observation that the meaning of the passage is centered.

A new perspective on human relationships
The struggle of every truly faithful person to live according to the Gospel of Christ has two dimensions: the vertical dimension, which concerns one's relationship with God, and the horizontal dimension, which concerns one's relationship with one's fellow man. Therefore, a Christian’s relationship with God cannot be independent of his relationship with other people. In practical terms, this means that when the spirituality of the believer and his communion with God is not reflected in a proper relationship with his fellow man and is not embodied in love, understanding, and forgiveness, then it is not genuine; it suffers from hypocrisy and double-mindedness. In the end, the believer deceives only himself.

Acquiring a merciful heart
A person who realizes that his sins, mistakes, and shortcomings before God are impossible to “repay” by his own
efforts, and that they are instead forgiven through the infinite philanthropy of God, cannot help but show the same attitude toward other people. This is what it means for a believer to acquire the “the same ethos of God,” as Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer writes. The power and truth of forgiveness, with which you embrace your fellow man, speak directly to his heart, and then miracles and transformations take place. For it is not naïveté to forgive; it is a privilege! It means doing what God Himself does. Certainly, evil, wrongdoing, and sin do not cease to have their negative consequences. Yet forgiveness and love are greater than these things, just as the love of God and the forgiveness that He continually offers us are greater.

Prayer List

Prayer for a Sick Person:

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant (me) patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal (me) as Your servant and grant (me) the gift of complete health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen
