HOPE & JOY is a Youth Group
for children in K-6th grades. 
We have great news!  Stala Jelis will be joining with Jenny Manis to organize this beautiful program.  Stala will plan the HOPE events (grades k-2) and Jenny will plan the JOY events (grades 3-6), but we will have plenty of events together where it makes sense.  We also look to the JOY children to help with some HOPE events as an opportunity to be of service to others. If your child is in 3rd grade, they can be in either group, but again, many events will be combined when appropriate.  Questions? please email us. THE SUNDAY EPISTLE (Hebrews 12:1-10)


The cloud of witnesses

Brethren, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time at their pleasure, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.

OUR ORTHODOX SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS

The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews attempts to strengthen the faith of young Christians who came from a Jewish background and experienced doubt and opposition from their former co-religionists. He refers to great figures of the Old Testament. These were the ones who, through the power of faith, performed acts of righteousness, achieved the fulfillment of God's promises, bore witness, and shed their blood for their faith in the one true God.
Orthodox spiritual life.

In today's reading, the Epistle calls on us to cast off the burdens of sin and to struggle in the arena of Orthodox spiritual life, having as our supporters the Martyrs of the Old Testament. Along with them, let us also rely on the martyrs of the New Testament, such as those we honor today – the Forty Martyrs who were martyred in the Lake of Sebaste.

This specific apostolic narrative aligns with the spirit of today's celebration, during which our Church commemorates the triumph of Orthodox faith and its spread to the ends of the world. In this faith, lived through the Orthodox spiritual life, we will dedicate the following thoughts, making note of three non-negotiable truths concerning our Orthodox self-awareness.

The identification of truth with Orthodoxy

The late Fr. George Kapsanis speaks about the identification of truth with Orthodoxy: "The unparalleled and completely incomparable superiority of our faith, compared to all other religions and philosophical worldviews, lies in the fact that Christ does not simply save as a moral teacher of a new morality or as a mere moral model. Christ, as the God-man, gave us the opportunity to become members of His Holy Body, His Church, and thus participate in His Divine Transfiguration and Resurrection, to achieve the purpose of our lives, which is our union with God. We are Orthodox Christians because we have tasted the truth of the Orthodox faith, the only true faith in Christ, the faith of the Apostles, the Martyrs, the Monastic Saints, the pure faith of the Holy Fathers. We do not boast of our own virtue. We do not boast of our personal holiness. However, we boast 'in the Lord' for our faith, the true faith of the true God."

The unchanging Orthodox faith

A former Protestant pastor, now an Orthodox priest in America, notes about the unchanging nature of Orthodox faith: "In Orthodoxy today, as in the past, the fundamental elements of Christian doctrine, worship, and governance are not ever offered for re-negotiation. For example, one cannot be an Orthodox Priest and reject the divinity of Christ, the Virgin Birth, the Resurrection, the Ascension into heaven, or the Second Coming. Simply put, the Church has not deviated from its course for nearly two thousand years. It is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic; it is the Church of the New Testament. The gates of Hades have repeatedly tried to overcome it, but they have not succeeded."


The interweaving of Hellenism and Orthodoxy

The third truth is emphasized by a great Greek statesman and refers to the shared journey of Hellenism and Orthodoxy in our homeland: "Orthodoxy, enriching the brilliant cultural tradition of classical antiquity, formed together with it the strong spiritual and ethical foundation of Hellenism, its cohesive essence, its guiding light, and its source of strength. Orthodoxy illuminated the steps of the Nation and directed its course through the long night of subjugation. For this reason, the concepts of Hellenism and Orthodoxy became inseparably intertwined in the consciousness of the Nation." 

One could mention even more truths about our faith, which we are divinely blessed to experience and enjoy within the Orthodox Church. We owe it to this faith to be worthy, honoring the struggles and sacrifices of all those who worked and continue to work for its glory and dignity.

Prayer for a Sick Person:

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant (me) patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal (me) as Your servant and grant (me) the gift of complete health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered His words and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Sunday of Orthodoxy

For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian (717-741) and ending in the reign of Theophilus (829-842). After Theophilus's death, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb. 11), together with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14), established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: "If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema." Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast, she asked God's forgiveness for her husband. After this, on the first Sunday of the Fast, she and her son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.

The Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebastia

These holy Martyrs, who came from various lands, were all soldiers under the same general. Taken into custody for their faith in Christ, and at first interrogated by cruel means, they were then stripped of their clothing and cast onto the frozen lake which is at Sebastia of Pontus, at a time when the harsh and freezing weather was at its worst. They endured the whole night naked in such circumstances, encouraging one another to be patient until the end. He that guarded them, named Aglaius, who was commanded to receive any of them that might deny Christ, had a vision in which he saw heavenly powers distributing crowns to all of the Martyrs, except one, who soon after abandoned the contest. Seeing this, Aglaius professed himself a Christian and joined the Martyrs on the lake, and the number of forty remained complete. In the morning, when they were almost dead from the cold, they were cast into fire, after which their remains were thrown into the river. Thus they finished the good course of martyrdom in 320, during the reign of Licinius. These are their names: Acacius, Aetius, Aglaius, Alexander, Angus, Athanasius, Candidus, Chudion, Claudius, Cyril, Cyrion, Dometian, Domnus, Ecdicius, Elias, Eunoicus, Eutyches, Eutychius, Flavius, Gaius, Gorgonius, Helianus, Heraclius, Hesychius, John, Lysimachus, Meliton, Nicholas, Philoctemon, Priscus, Sacerdon, Severian, Sisinius, Smaragdus, Theodulus, Theophilus, Valens, Valerius, Vivianus, and Xanthias.

Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas

This divine Father, who was from Asia Minor, was from childhood reared in the royal court of Constantinople, where he was instructed in both religious and secular wisdom. Later, while still a youth, he left the imperial court and struggled in asceticism on Mount Athos, and in the Skete at Beroea. He spent some time in Thessalonica being treated for an illness that came from his harsh manner of life. He was present in Constantinople at the Council that was convened in 1341 against Barlaam of Calabria, and at the Council of 1347 against Acindynus, who was of like mind with Barlaam; Barlaam and Acindynus claimed that the grace of God is created. At both these Councils, the Saint contended courageously for the true dogmas of the Church of Christ, teaching in particular that divine grace is not created, but is the uncreated energies of God which are poured forth throughout creation: otherwise it would be impossible, if grace were created, for man to have genuine communion with the uncreated God. In 1347 he was appointed Metropolitan of Thessalonica. He tended his flock in an apostolic manner for some twelve years, and wrote many books and treatises on the most exalted doctrines of our Faith; and having lived for a total of sixty-three years, he reposed in the Lord in 1359.

His holy relics are kept in the Cathedral of Thessalonica. A full service was composed for his feast day by the Patriarch Philotheus in 1368, when it was established that his feast be celebrated on this day. Since works without right faith avail nothing, we set Orthodoxy of faith as the foundation of all that we accomplish during the Fast, by celebrating the Triumph of Orthodoxy the Sunday before, and the great defender of the teachings of the holy Fathers today.

For in a contest there is much labor needed--and after the contest victory falls to some, to others disgrace. Is the palm ever given or the crown granted before the course is finished? ... Therefore no one can receive a reward, unless he has striven lawfully; nor is the victory a glorious one, unless the contest also has been toilsome.

Moses... was himself saved by means of wood and water before the Law was given, when he was exposed to the Nile's currents, hidden away in an Ark (Exod. 2:3-10). And by means of wood and water he saved the people of Israel, revealing the Cross by the wood, Holy Baptism by water (Exod. 14:15-31). Paul, who had looked upon the mysteries, says openly, 'They were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud' (I Cor. 10:2). He also bears witness that, even before the events concerning the sea and his staff, Moses willingly endured Christ's Cross, 'Esteeming', he says, 'the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt' (Heb. 11:26). For the Cross is the reproach of Christ from the standpoint of foolish men. As Paul himself says of Christ, 'He endured the cross, despising the shame' (Heb. 12:2).
