LORD'S VOICE
HAVE MERCY ON ME, LORD, SON OF DAVID!
Today's miracle of the gospel passage, shows a "hard" Christ with a behavior, the like of which we have never seen before in the New Testament. On the contrary, the behavior of the Canaanite mother is impressive. The Canaanite woman, that is, an idolater, approaches Christ and loudly cries out to Him to heal her daughter from the demon that she has. In this particular passage, no scream is heard from the possessed girl, but rather, the mother’s begging cry.
Knowledge through love
Christ does not pay attention to her, and treats her uncompassionately, with the aim of testing her faith. The idolatrous woman, as we heard in the Gospel dialogue, shows humility and sincerity and she courageously declares her faith in Christ’s healing power. The result was, for what she asked with such strong faith, to happen.
However, let's not focus on Christ's behavior or the faith of the Canaanite woman, but on the Lord’s effort to avoid showing His power. It is hidden in the Old Testament, in Moses and in Isaiah. It is also hidden in the New Testament, as the evangelists John and Matthew tell us. It is hidden from the Pharisees and the priests of the temple and the scribes of Israel. But where does it manifest itself? The evangelist John gives us the answer. We can know Christ only through our fellow human beings. In other words, God transfers the possibility of knowing Him, in love, as the only feeling that has the ability to understand Him.
Meeting with Christ
There is a great difference between knowing God and loving Him. Whoever loves Him, will know Him. Whoever does not love Him, will never know Him, even if he wants to. God, therefore, hides Himself from everywhere, so that we can know Him within ourselves.
We may not meet Him in our big churches, in the majesty of nature, or the ballast of people. It is certainly there, but it is hidden. We cannot locate Him. The Canaanite woman shows us the place of meeting with Christ. It is in us when we are tested, when we cry, when we hurt, when we long. He waits, without answering, as Christ did today. He waits for us to seek Him and loudly call out His name to heal us with His presence.
And then Christ will shout: "Man, you have great faith. Let what you wish, be done to you." And what we want is to know Christ so that our life can gain meaning. The Canaanite woman shows us the way.
Ways of encountering Christ
First, our faith must remain unaffected and unshaken by the silence of God in the requests and supplications of our prayers. We remain and insist on our request, and when God judges, then He answers in time, and in the way that is the most beneficial for our soul.
Second, God is drawn by our humility and brokenness, not only before His power, but mainly before people. Sincere and constant humility. A modern wise saint said: "Humility is not trying to convince others that we are not something, but the effort to convince ourselves. And then we have the grace to see the world and people as God made them". Not as we made it end up. So, humility opens our spiritual eyes to meet Christ within ourselves.

Fourth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:1-12
On the first day of the week at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking spices, which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And they remembered His words and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the Apostles; but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened.
Fourth Orthros Gospel
Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.
The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1.
Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.
Fourth Mode.
Sunday of the Canaanite
The Reading is from Matthew 15:21-28
At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.
Sunday of the Canaanite
According to some, this Saint was born in Rome, but according to others in Tyrrenia (Tuscany), and was consecrated to the archiepiscopal throne of Rome in 440. In 448, when Saint Flavian, Archbishop of Constantinople, summoned Eutyches, an archimandrite in Constantinople, to give account for his teaching that there was only one nature in Christ after the Incarnation, Eutyches appealed to Saint Leo in Rome. After Saint Leo had carefully examined Eutyches's teachings, he wrote an epistle to Saint Flavian, setting forth the Orthodox teaching of the person of Christ, and His two natures, and also counseling Flavian that, should Eutyches sincerely repent of his error, he should be received back with all good will. At the Council held in Ephesus in 449, which was presided over by Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria (and which Saint Leo, in a letter to the holy Empress Pulcheria in 451, was the first to call "The Robber Council"), Dioscorus, having military might behind him, did not allow Saint Leo's epistle to Flavian to be read, although repeatedly asked to do so; even before the Robber Council was held, Dioscorus had uncanonically received the unrepentant Eutyches back into communion. Because Saint Leo had many cares in Rome owing to the wars of Attila the Hun and other barbarians, in 451 he sent four delegates to the Fourth Ecumenical Council, where 630 Fathers gathered in Chalcedon during the reign of Marcian, to condemn the teachings of Eutyches and those who supported him. Saint Leo's epistle to Flavian was read at the Fourth Council, and was confirmed by the Holy Fathers as the Orthodox teaching on the incarnate person of our Lord; it is also called the "Tome of Leo." The Saint wrote many works in Latin; he reposed in 461. See also Saint Anatolius, July 3.
