Exterior Restoration of Saint George: We did it!

As we marked with the Archpastoral Visit with His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, we have completed the major milestones of the exterior restoration at Saint George! This restoration is the result of many years of both fundraising and planning. We are happy that we will be making a “50-year investment” in our community. Here are several highlights of the restoration, which include both “seen” and “unseen” items:

  • New steel underground framework to address our collapsing sidewalk DONE!
  • Repair, replacement, and cleaning of brickwork DONE!
  • New exterior lighting DONE!
  • A signature piece: a new (and insulated) stained glass window of our patron saint, St. George DONE!
  • Refurbished stairs DONE!
  • New railings DONE!
  • New signage DONE!
  • New support system for the failing stained glass upper lintel DONE!

We would like to thank all who have supported this effort—we are indebted to you! While the majority of fundraising has been completed, the Capital Fund is still open for contributions as we wrap up several items for completion. Let’s work to ensure that our 1886 building is prepared for the future!

Feel free to contact us if you would like to contribute. Email [email protected] or call 929-515-6795.

Stewardship is the cornerstone of giving to the Church. It represents each family’s individual financial commitment to the continuation of the Church, and the collective commitments serve the practical function of allowing our church to meet its expenses.

The Church’s goal is to completely offset its annual operating expenses through stewardship contributions. Meeting that goal would provide the Church with the stability and sustainability to use funds from fundraisers and other donations to expand ministries and to build existing programs, rather than having to use those proceeds to cover the Church’s operating budget.

Saints and Feasts

September 29

2nd Sunday of Luke

September 29

Cyriacus the Hermit of Palestine

This Saint was born in Corinth in 448. He went to Palestine to the Lavra of Euthymius the Great, but because of his youth was sent by Saint Euthymius to Saint Gerasimus; after the death of Saint Gerasimus he returned to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. Later he took on a more rigorous life of asceticism in the wilderness of Natoufa, where there was nothing to eat except the exceedingly bitter wild herb called squills, which, however, through his prayers, God made sweet for him and his disciple. He lived 107 years and reposed in the year 555.

September 29

Martyr Petronius

September 29

Malachi the New Righteous Martyr of Lindos

September 29

Theophanes the Merciful of Gaza

September 29

Dionysios I, Patriarch of Constantinople

September 30

Gregory the Illuminator, Bishop of Armenia

This Saint, a Parthian by race, was the son of Anak. He was born about the year 240 and was taught the Faith of Christ in Caesarea of Cappadocia. He entered the service of Tiridates, King of Armenia, but when discovered to be a Christian, he was subjected to many horrible torments at the King's hands, then was cast into a pit of mire with poisonous serpents and left to die. By the power of God, however, he abode there unharmed for fourteen years, his needs provided by a certain widow, until he was made known by revelation and set free. He converted to piety innumerable multitudes of Armenians, including Tiridates himself, and was consecrated bishop by Leontius, Archbishop of Caesarea, to shepherd the vast flock he had gained for Christ. He spent the last part of his life in retirement in the ascetical discipline, and reposed in peace about the year 325. Saint Gregory is honoured as the Illuminator of Armenia.
