Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the heavens rejoice; let the earth be glad, for the Lord has shown the mighty power of His arm. He trampled down death by death and became the firstborn of the dead. From the depths of Hades, He delivered us and granted to the world great mercy.

Forgiveness Sunday

The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration of Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight here, on the eve of the holy Forty-day Fast, demonstrating to us not by simple words, but by actual deeds, how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive are insatiety and the transgressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave to man was that of fasting, which the first-fashioned received but did not keep; and not only did they not become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The God-bearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bringing to mind what we have fallen from, and what we have suffered because of the insatiety and disobedience of the first-fashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day, first from God, then from one another and all creation.

Our Holy Father Nicholas Planas

 

Saint Nicholas Planas was born in 1851 A.D. on the island of Naxos in Greece. He was married as a teenager and soon after ordained to the diaconate and then the priesthood. His wife reposed soon after and so he assumed the burden of being a widowed father and a parish priest. He was known for his zeal in serving the liturgy, especially his habit of serving the Divine Liturgy every day for 50 years. Many altar boys would see him radiating light or raised off the ground while serving the liturgy. Being so revered by his parishioners, he became known as “Papa,” which is an affectionate term for a parish priest. Papa Nicholas reposed in 1932 and was formally canonized as a saint in 1992.

Konon the Gardener

This saint lived during the reign of emperor Decius in 251. He came from the town of Nazareth. He left his hometown and went to the city of Mandron, in the province of Pamphylia. There he stayed at a place called Karmela or Karmena cultivating a garden which he used to water and plant with various vegetables. From this garden he obtained what is necessary for life. He had such an upright and simple mind that, when he met those who wished to arrest him and saw that they greeted him, he also greeted in return from the bottom of his soul and heart. When they told him that governor Publius called the saint to go to him, the saint answered with simplicity: "What does the governor need me, since I am a Christian? Let him call those who think the way he does and have the same religion with him." So, the blessed man was tied and brought to the governor, who tried to move him to sacrifice to the idols. But the saint sighed from the bottom of his heart, cursed the tyrant and confirmed his faith in Christ with his confession, saying that it is not possible to be moved from it even though he might be tortured cruelly. So, for this reason they nailed his feet and made the saint run in front of the governor's coach. But the saint fainted in the street. Having fallen on his knees, he prayed and, thus, he commended his holy soul to the hands of God.

Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4.

Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Wisdom of the Fathers

Before we enter the Lenten fast, we are reminded that there can be no true fast, no genuine repentance, no reconciliation with God, unless we are at the same time reconciled with one another. A fast without mutual love is the fast of demons. . . We do not travel the road of Lent as isolated individuals but as members of a family.

Do we forgive our neighbors their trespasses? God also forgives us in His mercy. Do we refuse to forgive? God, too, will refuse to forgive us. As we treat our neighbors, so also does God treat us. The forgiveness, then, of your sins or unforgiveness, and hence also your salvation or destruction, depend on you yourself, man. For without forgiveness of sins there is no salvation.

ORTHODOX ADULT EDUCATION

Fr Vasili will be offering an Orthodox Education class on Saturday evenings following Great Vespers during Great Lent (and possibly beyond). Our fist class will be on "Orthodox Phronima" this coming Saturday, March 8th. The presentations are designed for both enquirers and parishioners. All are welcome to attend!

LENTEN SERVICES THIS WEEK

03/02/2025

This coming week is known as Clean Week in the Orthodox Church, and we have the opportunity to enter into Great Lent with extra services. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings at 7pm we will serve Great Compline with the canon of repentance. Wednesday evening is our first Pre-Sanctified Liturgy of the season, and we also serve Pre-Sanctified on Friday mornings at 9am. Friday evening at 7pm we serve Small Compline with the first installment of the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God. HONORING THE DANCE INNOVATORS OF ANCHORAGE

Parishioners of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church are invited to attend Anchorage Dance History:  Connecting Generations, in which Steve Primis, husband of Diane Primis and longtime dance instructor and parish chanter, will be one of the honorees. Steve’s granddaughter Sofia Pennino will be performing a ballet variation in his honor as one of the many performances of the evening. The event takes place on Friday, April 4, 2025 @ 6:30pm - 9:00pm at the Anchorage Museum! See the flyer in the parish hall for more information on this event!


FESTIVAL UPDATE

02/23/2025

The calendar for the food preparation festival is posted downstairs on the bulletin board and we will work to get it the Church Calendar digitally for reference. Allison has kindly agreed to be the lead for baking days! Thank you to Allison!  Baking will kick off in May this Year. As we approach that time look for sign-up sheets so we can get enough people for each day.  


MEMORIAL PAGES IN FESTIVAL PROGRAM

We are working on having a program to hand out at the Festival this year. Parishioners who would like to purchase a memorial page for a loved one should speak with Tim Scott. The cost for a full page is $300. Please connect with Tim before Pascha. After Pascha we will open up remaining pages more widely to businesses for advertising, but want to give parishioners the opportunity first.  


FESTIVAL CHARITY NOMINATIONS

It is time to think about our Festival Charity recipient for 2025. Our Festival Leadership Committee is encouraging us to think of organizations in the local Anchorage community. Please submit any nominations to Father or Liz Papacostas. Parish Council will select 3 nominees which will be voted on by the full parish at the Spring General Assembly in April. 


MAC AND CHEESE

Yes, we are still collecting Mac and Cheese! FISH Food Pantry distributes an average of 150 boxes of Mac and Cheese each week. Let's keep them in good supply! The Papacostas family is looking for one or two more families to take shifts on transporting the food to the pantry, located at Tudor and Lake Otis. If this can be you, please talk to Liz for details.


2025 STEWARDSHIP CARDS

If you have not filled out your stewardship form for 2025 please do so soon! We would like to have everyone in the parish signed up as an official steward to get an accurate count of members and families in the parish. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and to strengthen our faith, and it is also a requirement for voting at our General Assemblies.
