Greek Independence Day
at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church
Pawtucket City Hall and Rhode Island State House
On Sunday, March 23, 2025 at the end of Divine Liturgy, there was a doxology honoring the heroes of the Greek Revolution. After church, our Assumption Greek School program took place in the Community Center. We were so proud of our Assumption children as we watched their presentation honoring the heroes of 1821. Thank you to the PTO for the beautiful reception.
On Tuesday, March 25, 2025 after the Divine Liturgy for the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the Assumption parish celebrated Greek Independence Day at Pawtucket City Hall. The event was well-attended by parishioners. Much appreciation to Fr. Philip Zymaris who gave the invocation and spoke about the importance of Greek Independence Day, Senator Lou Raptakis who offered greetings, and John Lyssikatos who gave an informative and interesting speech on the significance of the day. Also present were Assumption Parish Council President George Karalis and Vice President Andrea Vastis, as well as Greek School Principal Panagiota Vastis and GOYA President Katerina Lazouras. The presentation took place in the beautiful City Council Chambers and was followed by the raising of the Greek flag outside in front of Pawtucket City Hall. Also, a reception hosted by Assumption and organized by Office Administrator Beth Lazouras was enjoyed by all in attendance at Pawtucket City Hall.
Later in the afternoon, there was a celebration which took place at the Rhode Island State House in honor of Greek Independence Day. Assumption Greek School students Dimitrios Kosivas and Lefteris Papavasiliou recited the poem "The Greek Boy" and did an excellent job!!! A reception followed at Annunciation Church in Cranston.
Many thanks to our Greek School Principal Panagiota Vastis and teachers Sophia Augoustakis and Stavroula Papavasiliou for their hard work!!!
