Xenophon & his Companions

This Saint, a wealthy nobleman of Constantinople, was filled with piety toward God. He had two sons, Arcadius and John, whom he sent to Beirut to study law. But they were shipwrecked during their voyage; barely saved, they forsook all things and departed for Palestine. Saint Xenophon and his wife Mary, ignorant of what had happened, went in search of their sons. On finding them in Jerusalem, dressed in the habit of monks, they also took up the monastic life. And thus, having completed their lives in holiness, they departed for the Lord about the beginning of the sixth century. Saint Xenophon and his sons reposed at Saint Sabbas Monastery, and Mary at the Monastery of Saint Theodosius.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Ninth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in My side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and My God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life in His name.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to Timothy 4:9-15.

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and suffer reproach, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress.

Gospel Reading

15th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 19:1-10

At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Tone

Angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, and those guarding it became like dead, and at Your grave Mary was standing, seeking Your most pure body. You plundered Hades, not being tempted by it; You encountered the virgin, granting life. O Lord, who rose from the dead, glory to You!

Seasonal Kontakion in the 1st Tone

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

Message from Fr. Jon

Pastoral Message from the January Beacon

01/01/2025

Dear Faithful and Friends of the Assumption,

As we enter into the new year, we not only are completing a prior year, but our first 100 years as a parish. The Assumption is 100 years old! We have been truly blessed to be of the Faith established by Christ and His Apostles—the faith that the Acts of the Apostles is written about and to which the letters (epistles) of the New Testament were written. The Faith that stands unchanged almost 2000 years later and is the only growing Christian Church growing in this present age. We are not of “A faith,” but of “The Faith.”

As a parish, we not only stand upon the great tradition of the Holy Fathers of our Faith, but upon the shoulders of the “Fathers” of our Assumption—all of the great men and women that planted our parish and worked tirelessly to create a community. So many that sacrificed for the first, second and third temples of our community so that their children and grandchildren would have a home and a family. For many without progeny, they sacrificed for the good of the community that all those searching for the Truth may have a place of worship in Louisville.

What makes all of this so pertinent and timely is that we are called on to do likewise today. As we look back at the prior century, we also look ahead to the century that we now inaugurate. In this first year of our 2nd century, we will commence the building of a building to house our fellowship, religious education and outreach ministries. We will further build upon the legacy of the great founders of our parish. By continuing to build upon the foundation they set, we honor their legacy. One day, those who follow this generation will honor our sacrifices as they are edified in the home that we have continued to build. Many who have not yet even heard of Orthodoxy will come to the faith through the sacred work that we embark on today.

I know that it is difficult to appreciate these defining moments in our history as they are occurring—it may even be difficult to recognize that we are in such a moment—but there is no doubt that 2025 will be a shining moment in the history of our Blessed Assumption. It will be a year of sacrifice, hard work, and moments of weakness as we tire ourselves in this blessed venture; but it will also be a year replete with blessings in which our efforts will be multiplied for this generation and those to follow!

Praying that the Lord continue to bless each of us in 2025 with the fullness of health!

Fr. Jon
