Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1.

Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Gospel Reading

1st Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 5:1-11

At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Saints and Feasts

October 01

The Feast of the Holy Skepi of the Theotokos

The Feast of the Protection commemorates the appearance of the most holy Theotokos in the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople in the tenth century, as recorded in the life of Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ's sake. While the multitudes of the faithful were gathered in church, Epiphanius, the friend of Saint Andrew, through the Saint's prayers, beheld the Virgin Mary above the faithful and spreading out her veil over them, signifying her unceasing protection of all Christians. Because of this we keep a yearly feast of gratitude, imploring our Lady never to cease sheltering us in her mighty prayers.

The Feast is celebrated on October 1. In the 1950s, the Church of Greece began to observe the Feast on October 28.

Wisdom of the Fathers

For now they were well instructed beforehand...But mark both their faith and their obedience. For though they were in the midst of their work when they heard His command, they delayed not, they procrastinated not, they said not, "let us return home, and converse with our kinsfolk," but "they forsook all and followed."
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 14 on Matthew 4, 4th Century

Memorial

Today’s memorial is offered in loving memory of Theodoros Kollaris (25 yr) and Maria Kollaris (2.5 yr), by the Sedito and Kollaris family.

Agape Coffee Fellowship

Thank you to Linda Dallaku and Betsy Ern for hosting today’s Coffee Fellowship.

Please look at your calendars and volunteer for a Sunday.

Please sign up here: Coffee Fellowship Sign Up

Philoptochos lovingly organizes and supports our weekly Agape Coffee Fellowship, creating a welcoming space where hearts connect and our parish family grows closer. We warmly invite every steward and family to continue nurturing and supporting this beautiful ministry.

We encourage each steward and family to consider offering a Coffee Hour once a year — a simple and meaningful act of love and hospitality toward our parish family. All essentials are provided, and treats are always optional. Support is available for first‑time hosts or whenever assistance is desired.

Your contributions help sustain this weekly gathering and allow us to continue offering it with joy and care. A typical Coffee Hour costs about $50, and for those who feel moved to contribute, a collection basket is available each Sunday, along with a convenient QR code for online donations.

Thank you for helping us nurture a warm, welcoming, and joyful gathering for all.

If you'd like to be a hostess or host please sign up on line or contact Danai Sachinidou, Linda Dallaku or Betsy Ern at [email protected].

For Agape Fellowship Sponsoring opportunities/availability please contact Margot Racano at [email protected].

Parish Picnic

Due to the forecasted nor'easter this weekend, our parish picnic originally scheduled for this Sunday is cancelled.

The Church is the Ark of Salvation.  Rain may keep us from a picnic; it need not keep us from the Holy Mysteries.

Come, worship, and give thanks to the Lord and receive His gifts.

A rain date will be announced next week. Please watch the church app, email and bulletin announcements.

On Behalf of All

In honor of the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, join Presvytera Melanie for a special prayerful reflection on motherhood, faith, and the loving intercessions of the Mother of God.

In this episode of Family Matters: Fully Human Edition, Presvytera Melanie offers a supplicatory prayer to the Theotokos on behalf of all mothers, especially those who experience atypical childbearing and childrearing journeys. Drawing from the life of the Virgin Mary, she reflects on moments that offer comfort, encouragement, and solidarity for mothers navigating unique challenges and blessings.

Through joy and sorrow, uncertainty and hope, the Mother of God remains a companion and advocate for all who seek her prayers.

Listen and pray along as we entrust ourselves and our families to her loving care.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us!

Reminder: Sensory bags are available for families to borrow during Divine Services and return afterward, allowing all children -- and their caregivers -- to more fully participate in the Liturgy. Please ask a member of our Parish Council to direct you to select a bag at any time (they are all a little different) and please return it when finished. We also have several weighted lap pads available to borrow.

Our Parish Council has decided to continue placing the traditional Collection Basket on a table in the Narthex. Parishioners and visitors may offer a donation if they wish following Divine Liturgy and other Services as they exit the Church.
