This Martyr was from Catania in Sicily and contested during the reign of Diocletian. He presented himself of his own accord to Calvisianus the Governor, who put him to exceedingly harsh torments. As Euplus was on the rack, Calvisianus commanded him to worship Mars, Apollo, and Aesculapius; he answered he worshipped the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He was beheaded in the year 304.
The divine Maximus, who was from Constantinople, sprang from an illustrious family. He was a lover of wisdom and an eminent theologian. At first, he was the chief private secretary of the Emperor Heraclius and his grandson Constans. But when the Monothelite heresy became predominant in the royal court, out of hatred for this error the Saint departed for the Monastery at Chrysopolis (Scutari), of which he later became the abbot. When Constans tried to constrain him either to accept the Monothelite teaching, or to stop speaking and writing against it - neither of which the Saint accepted to do - his tongue was uprooted and his right hand was cut off, and he was sent into exile, where he reposed in 662. At the time only he and his few disciples were Orthodox in the East. See also January 21.
Concerning the Dormition of the Theotokos, this is what the Church has received from ancient times from the tradition of the Fathers. When the time drew nigh that our Savior was well-pleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed continuously. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. While these things were taking place, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one happened to be preaching, and brought them at once to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction as was meet, and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed the Apostles, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God.
With reverence and many lights, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that God-receiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent forth her who is higher than the Cherubim. But one Jew, moved by malice, audaciously stretched forth his hand upon the bed and immediately received from divine judgment the wages of his audacity. Those daring hands were severed by an invisible blow. But when he repented and asked forgiveness, his hands were restored. When they had reached the place called Gethsemane, they buried there with honor the all-immaculate body of the Theotokos, which was the source of Life. But on the third day after the burial, when they were eating together, and raised up the artos (bread) in Jesus' Name, as was their custom, the Theotokos appeared in the air, saying "Rejoice" to them. From this they learned concerning the bodily translation of the Theotokos into the Heavens.
These things has the Church received from the traditions of the Fathers, who have composed many hymns out of reverence, to the glory of the Mother of our God (see Oct. 3 and 4).

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. 7th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 9:27-35
At that time, as Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Καὶ περιῆγεν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς τὰς πόλεις πάσας καὶ τὰς κώμας διδάσκων ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν καὶ κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας καὶ θεραπεύων πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν ἐν τῷ λαῷ.

Dear Festival team, due to YOUR efforts, our dedicated and tireless volunteers – we once again pulled off an amazing Festival. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we seem to improve every year! Excellent teamwork, months of food workshops/prep, attentive planning, superb execution and a dose of perfect weather combined to create another record breaking year.
Our Treasurer, Angela Tsopelas, has already calculated an approx. topline revenue figure (thanks Angela, EJ, Gina & team!):
This compares very favorably to last year and is +13% (+$19,000) above our budgeted goal of $150,000! Another awesome result in a long string of record breaking years – and something we can all take pride in!
It will take some time to generate a Festival bottom-line profit figure, as Angela has to account for all the bills, invoices payable, etc. If you have any Festival related expenses, please get the invoices to Angela, as soon as possible, by placing in the Treasurer’s mail-slot in the Church office. Also, if you organized or know of any in-kind donations from Parishioners, community members, or businesses, can you please let one of the GFF Executive Committee know, so we can send them a personal thank you.
We’ve sold out of >98% of all the food, and 100% of the pastries, we prepared. We can all be rightfully proud of that! We have approx. 15 pans of lamb shank, and a very small amount of keftethes left-over. We’re already planning on how best to sell/donate this food, so it doesn’t go to waste.
Please mark your calendars: Our Festival feedback meeting will be held on Thurs. Aug. 22, 6 PM, in the Church conference room. We take these key learnings and improvement suggestions very seriously, and they often form the basis of our platform the following year. For e.g., the larger gyro/loukoumathes footprints, and two inside serving line concepts came out of those meetings - and I believe we would all agree, were highly beneficial to our 2024 Festival. If you are unable to make the 8/22 feedback meeting, please send your suggestions to one of the exec committee, ideally in advance of the meeting.
Please also look for an upcoming announcement on an equipment storage/clean-up volunteer day, date TBD. We will organize and store the Festival related items in the various Nicholson Hall closets. Also, please return (to Nicholson Hall) the Festival yard signs you’ve placed around the area. It’s important that we ‘de-clutter’ the local area and save the signs for future years. Thank you.
Our adoring local fanbase once again enjoyed our welcoming atmosphere, music, culture, drinks and especially food. Our kitchen staff did an outstanding job of keeping up with the food lines and everyone’s warmth and positivity truly delighted our customers.
