Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Mode

Let us the faithful give praise and worship to the Logos, coeternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation; for of His own goodwill he consented to ascend the cross in the flesh and endured death and raised the dead by His glorious resurrection.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Saints and Feasts

August 04

Seven Holy Youths of Ephesus

The Seven Youths hid themselves in a certain cave near Ephesus in the year 250, to escape the persecution of Decius. By divine grace, a sleep came upon them and they slept for 184 years, until the reign of Saint Theodosius the Younger, when the doctrine of the resurrection was being assailed by heretics. They then awoke, that is, were resurrected, confirming in the sight of all the bodily resurrection; and again after a short time, by divine command, they reposed in the Lord in the year 434.

August 06

Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Our Lord had spoken to His disciples many times not only concerning His Passion, Cross, and Death, but also concerning the coming persecutions and afflictions that they themselves would endure. Since all these evils were near at hand, but the enjoyment of good things which they hoped to receive in their stead was yet to come, our Savior desired to give them full assurance, evidently and openly, concerning that glory which is prepared for those who endure to the end. Therefore, fulfilling that which He had promised shortly before, that "there be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in His Kingdom" (Matt. 16:28), He took His three foremost disciples and ascended Mount Tabor, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as the light. Suddenly, together with this dread and marvelous effulgence of light, there appeared those pinnacles of the Prophets, Moses and Elias, who spoke with the Lord Jesus concerning His saving Passion which was about to take place. Standing before Him as reverent servants, they showed that He is the Lord of both the living and the dead, for Moses came forth from Hades, having died many centuries before, and Elias, as it were from heaven, whither he had been taken up while yet alive. After a little while a radiant cloud overshadowed them and out of the cloud they heard that same voice which had been heard at the Jordan at the Baptism of Christ, testifying to the Divinity of Jesus and saying: "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased; hear ye Him" (Matt. 17: 5).

Such are the marvels, truly worthy of God, celebrated in this present feast, which is an image and prefiguring of the future state of the righteous, whose splendor the Lord spoke of, saying: "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun" (Matt. 13:43). It is because of this that the Kontakion of this Feast is said daily (when there is not a great feast) in the Service of the Typica in perpetual commemoration of the glory that will be the lot of the Saints. According to tradition, the Lord's Transfiguration came to pass forty days before His Crucifixion; this is why the Transfiguration is celebrated forty days before the Exaltation of the Cross.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal First Mode. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 12:6-14.

Brethren, having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

Plagal First Mode.

Gospel Reading

6th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 9:1-8

At that time, getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" he then said to the paralytic -- "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

6th Sunday of Matthew

Festival

Huge Thank You to all volunteers who helped make this Festival such a tremendous success.

Festival signs please remember to return them to church!

Dear Festival team, due to YOUR efforts, our dedicated and tireless volunteers – we once again pulled off an amazing Festival.  It’s not an exaggeration to say that we seem to improve every year!  Excellent teamwork, months of food workshops/prep, attentive planning, superb execution and a dose of perfect weather combined to create another record breaking year.

Our Treasurer, Angela Tsopelas, has already calculated an approx. topline revenue figure (thanks Angela, EJ, Gina & team!):

  • Festival food/drink sales: $152,457 Sales + $6,705 Tips = $159,162 total gross sales
  • Sponsors = approx. $8,500
  • Giving Tree = approx. $1,625 (not counting ‘in-kind’ donations)
  • Total Revenue = approx. $169,300

This compares very favorably to last year and is +13% (+$19,000) above our budgeted goal of $150,000!  Another awesome result in a long string of record breaking years – and something we can all take pride in!

It will take some time to generate a Festival bottom-line profit figure, as Angela has to account for all the bills, invoices payable, etc.  If you have any Festival related expenses, please get the invoices to Angela, as soon as possible, by placing in the Treasurer’s mail-slot in the Church office.  Also, if you organized or know of any in-kind donations from Parishioners, community members, or businesses, can you please let one of the GFF Executive Committee know, so we can send them a personal thank you.

We’ve sold out of >98% of all the food, and 100% of the pastries, we prepared.  We can all be rightfully proud of that!  We have approx. 15 pans of lamb shank, and a very small amount of keftethes left-over.  We’re already planning on how best to sell/donate this food, so it doesn’t go to waste.

Please mark your calendars:  Our Festival feedback meeting will be held on Thurs. Aug. 22, 6 PM, in the Church conference room.  We take these key learnings and improvement suggestions very seriously, and they often form the basis of our platform the following year.  For e.g., the larger gyro/loukoumathes footprints, and two inside serving line concepts came out of those meetings - and I believe we would all agree, were highly beneficial to our 2024 Festival.  If you are unable to make the 8/22 feedback meeting, please send your suggestions to one of the exec committee, ideally in advance of the meeting.

Please also look for an upcoming announcement on an equipment storage/clean-up volunteer day, date TBD.  We will organize and store the Festival related items in the various Nicholson Hall closets.  Also, please return (to Nicholson Hall) the Festival yard signs you’ve placed around the area.  It’s important that we ‘de-clutter’ the local area and save the signs for future years.  Thank you.

Our adoring local fanbase once again enjoyed our welcoming atmosphere, music, culture, drinks and especially food.  Our kitchen staff did an outstanding job of keeping up with the food lines and everyone’s warmth and positivity truly delighted our customers.  Here’s a few examples that came in over the weekend, from customer e-mail responses:

  • “…as usual, the food is spectacular and the dedication of the volunteers is clearly evident.  We went on Friday twice for lunch and dinner!! The evening music was so enjoyable and uplifting.  As a vegetarian, I greatly appreciate all the options, and the falafel gyro was so delicious, along with the spanakopita”.  Meryl L.
  • “…my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinners yesterday evening. We were so impressed by how well organized and how smoothly everything went.  I was especially enamored of the stuffed grape leaves.  I think that they are the best that I have ever had.  I wonder if there’s any chance that I could get the recipe…”  Ellen D.
  • “This Fest was the best ever.  I had gyros Friday and Saturday and meatballs, Dolmathes and Greek beer today.  Met interesting people and donated to the church. It was well run and I noticed the clean-up people (black t-shirts) doing a good job…”  Peter M.
  • “…went yesterday. Everything was delicious!”  Stacy S.
  • “Truly a wonderful note!  You guys help make our community what it is!”  Jerry B.
  • “What a great idea to email daily on what's available.  The chicken gyros were delicious!  As was the lamb shank dinner I picked up Friday. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers for another outstanding event!” Wendy A.
  • “…I attended lunch and dinner on Friday and then lunch yesterday.  Delicious!!!  Always a wonderful family event.”  Kimm W.

Our entire Parish stepped up to make our Festival a rousing success!  We are very proud to be a part of that effort.

Respectfully and with deep gratitude,

The Festival Executive Committee

Angela Tsopelas, Ed Connor, Gina Dussi, Jim Sperelakis
