STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

As you know, we began our 2026 Stewardship Campaign a few months ago.  While we are grateful to all who have submitted forms, we are still accepting commitment forms.

If you have not yet filled one out, we urge you to do so.  Our 2026 operating expenses, like yours at home, continue to go up.  In addition, unexpected but necessary building maintenance and improvement projects, are taking a toll on our treasury.  Today more than ever in our past, we need to have a clear understanding of our financial position in order to prioritize and continually evaluate our options.  We pride ourselves on being fiscally responsible and good stewards of our funds.  In order to continue to do this, we need everyone’s input.  If you need a stewardship form, they are available on the church website as well as in the church Narthex.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. God bless you and your families.

Annunciation Cathedral Stewardship Committee.

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

"Sharing food with the less fortunate" is our newest philanthropic initiative. We have undertaken this as an on-going parish-wide activity.  Our objective is to maintain 2 bags of groceries in our pantry at all times for distribution to those who need a bit of help.

Some requested items include:  peanut butter, pasta sauce, pasta, canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, soups, macaroni and cheese, oatmeal, canned or dry milk, crackers, cooking oil, sugar, flour, toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper, kleenex, paper toweling body soap, moisturizer, dish soap, etc.

You will find a container in the Narthex for your donations.  Please ensure items are not expired, packaging is intact and no glass containers.   "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed" (Proverbs 19:17).

Memorial Coffee Hour Fees: Parishioners of the Annunciation $150.00, Non-parishioners $200.00. This includes 2 tables of 8 completely set with 8 plates of food, utensils, and beverages (coffee and water). Additional tables of 8 are $25.00 each.

GREENING THE PARISH INITIATIVE

The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate are sponsoring a Greening the Parish Initiative.  The goals are to create greater awareness of the leadership of His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholemew on issues of the environment and creation.  We are looking to inspire engagement and working-together within our parish communities.  Together, we can create an attitude and culture of caring for creation within the entire Greek Orthodox community.

Today's message is:

Choose loose-leaf tea over tea bags. Many tea bags contain plastic sealing agents and can't be composted. Loose-leaf tea produces far less waste and often tastes better too.

WE NEED SAFETY COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS

The parish council has decided it is important to establish a cathedral security and safety committee, especially with the recent tragedy that occurred at a church in Grand Blanc in September. Anyone who is interested (especially those who have any security or police experience or medical training) please contact Jim Boloven at 734-777-5541.

BULLETIN ARTICLES

All articles to be included in the Sunday Bulletin must be submitted by 12pm on Thursdays.

Apodosis of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary

Concerning the Dormition of the Theotokos, this is what the Church has received from ancient times from the tradition of the Fathers. When the time drew nigh that our Savior was well-pleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed continuously. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. While these things were taking place, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one happened to be preaching, and brought them at once to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction as was meet, and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed the Apostles, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God.

With reverence and many lights, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that God-receiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent forth her who is higher than the Cherubim. But one Jew, moved by malice, audaciously stretched forth his hand upon the bed and immediately received from divine judgment the wages of his audacity. Those daring hands were severed by an invisible blow. But when he repented and asked forgiveness, his hands were restored. When they had reached the place called Gethsemane, they buried there with honor the all-immaculate body of the Theotokos, which was the source of Life. But on the third day after the burial, when they were eating together, and raised up the artos (bread) in Jesus' Name, as was their custom, the Theotokos appeared in the air, saying "Rejoice" to them. From this they learned concerning the bodily translation of the Theotokos into the Heavens.

These things has the Church received from the traditions of the Fathers, who have composed many hymns out of reverence, to the glory of the Mother of our God (see Oct. 3 and 4).

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord by His Might, has created a Dominion. He has conquered death by death, and become the first-born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of Hades, and has granted the world great mercy.

Apolytikion for Apodosis of the Dormition in the First Mode

In birth, you preserved your virginity; in death, you did not abandon the world, O Theotokos. As mother of life, you departed to the source of life, delivering our souls from death by your intercessions.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

First Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Matthew 28:16-20

At that time, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen."

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Psalm 46.6,1.
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 15:1-11.

Brethren, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast -- unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God which is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Gospel Reading

12th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 19:16-26

At that time, a young man came up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, "Good Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?" And he said to him, "Why do you call me good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

14-year-old National Oratorical Festival winner brings familial love to the podium

08/20/2026

For 14-year-old Stephen Mueller, the 2026 junior division champion of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, taking gold means much.

A rising high school freshman from Greeley, Colorado, Stephen is this year’s junior winner of the national St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, held in June at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Northridge, California. Prior to his victory, Stephen had participated in the Oratorical Festival only once before in 2025. He attends St. Spyridon Church in Loveland, Colorado with his parents and eight siblings.

The young orator’s speech centered on the Festival’s second topic for the junior division: “Choose a Saint who was a child or young person. How did their faith influence their life, and what can we learn from them?” Stephen opted to speak about St. Hope, a second-century child-martyr who was the daughter of St. Sophia and sister of Sts. Faith and Love. St. Hope is also the patron saint of Stephen’s older sister, Zhanna.

Because of the connection to his sister, Stephen said this topic “spoke to him.” His family adopted Zhanna from Ukraine when she was nine, with Stephen noting that “she’d been through a lot. She doesn’t talk. She needs help with pretty much everything she does.”

He noticed parallels between the story of St. Hope and the story of his sister. “It was something powerful that I could talk to, that really spoke to my heart, something that I could see through my own eyes.”

In his speech, Stephen discussed the hardships his sister had faced in her life and connected them to St. Hope’s martyrdom, encouraging his audience to emulate the forbearance, humility, and child-like faith of the two.

His speech was a long-running labor of love. Each year, the Oratorical Festival begins before Lent and continues as late as June—a marathon for the middle and high school students who reach nationals.

But Stephen did not run the marathon alone: in addition to Zhanna’s influence, he credits other members of his family as sources of inspiration.

“This was my second year doing [the Oratorical Festival], following in my older sister Evangeline’s footsteps. She’s been doing it for years; she reached the national level twice. She definitely does a lot of writing, and my mom writes, my grandma writes, so they loved helping me out with my speech. I give all the thanks to them.”

“My mom reminded me to practice, she would always listen and be there, she would time me, she would do everything. She definitely helped me.”

Stephen also hopes to become a priest one day— a dream ignited by his father’s path to the presbyterate. He said this dream is now possible because of the scholarship prize he received for his first-place win.

“Before we became Orthodox, my dad was a Lutheran pastor. Now he’s pursuing becoming an Orthodox priest,” Stephen said, noting that his father attended Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and now awaits a potential ordination to the diaconate. “I know [the Oratorical Festival] changed my life because I have a full scholarship to Hellenic College now, and my plan is to become a priest. I look up to my dad a lot, so I wanted to follow in his footsteps. The prize I won is going to be big for the future.”

The words of Archbishop Elpidophoros of America— who attended the Festival in June— particularly inspired the young orator. While in Northridge, His Eminence charged the young men of the competition to consider the priesthood. Stephen recalled the Archbishop saying, “If you’re a young man and you’ve made it this far [in the Oratorical Festival], you have the skill set to maybe be a priest,” words which Stephen said were encouraging.

When asked how the Festival has impacted him, Stephen remarked that it has “built his confidence.” He admitted that he felt nervous before delivering his speech, “but I got through it,” he said. “It showed me that there’s a lot of things that are in my power. If I put my mind to it, I can get it done.”

“So many kids my age think, ‘Oh, I have my whole life ahead of me, I can save worship for later,’ but that’s not the case. You never know which day is going to be your last. You have to devote your entire life to Christ, no matter what.”
